This simply sounds like an inversion of Japanese games getting tougher-looking North American box art (in this case, an American game getting cuter-looking Japanese box art) rather than a new trope.

After watching a You Tube video it was brought to my attention that Crash gets the reverse treatment of Kirby, in only Japan they change the game covers to be softer and cuter with everyone from crash to Crotex, but beside that, text and voice over they keep the game they seemingly keep it the same. This started with the first crash and has gone all the way to the N'sane trilogy that was just released. should we make a separate page from "American Kirby is hard core"? here's an example using one of the older games :
