Might be Continuity Lockout in action; fans like all the lore references but it falls flat as a work to non-fans.

What if it isn’t about continuity and more about easter eggs? The plot can be decently follows but the movie’s charm depends on you knowing all the references?

Pandering to the Base, of the sort that one can see pretty good justification for given that the Target Audience being pandered to is a fairly massive fanbase.

Gets into several flavors of Fan Dumb, also, if people were going into the Mario movie expecting something other than a high-budget goofy action-comedy popcorn flick filled with references and in-jokes as a love letter to fans. Misaimed Fandom and Periphery Hatedom are two particular forms where a segment of the fandom wants it to be something the creators don't intend, or those outside the Target Audience complain that they aren't being catered to.
