It's white-with-a-black-border on transparent, technically, and appears equally readable to us with Night Vision both on and off? (e: okay ninja'd on the details but, yeah that's still our view)
And generally speaking, transparent images are preferred over solid-color backgrounds when available.

The second image is indeed a bit more difficult to read, because the letters are smaller and at the same time it's white text on white background.
KnightVizier is fairly new, perhaps they need informing that image changes require going throught the Image Pickin thread?
I tried to take this to Image Pickin but it's full.
I'll ask the troper who changed the image about this.
In any case, we might want to re-upload the old one so the file name doesn't reference the Shark Punching Center.
I had a dog-themed avatar before it was cool.
The new one only works with night vision, which is turned off by default, so yeah, revert to the old one.

For the record, a "quality improvement" is not replacing one image with a "better" image. That requires a thread. A "quality improvement" refers to some quantity of the image being improved, such as resolution, size, (and including file type). Even selecting an image with better colour/brightness needs at least some consensus (a post or two in the main thread to confirm quality improvement) before replacing.
Changing the colour balance and text of an image is definitely not covered by "quality improvement" exceptions.
