Brandon Tenold has a new review for Twitch of the Death Nerve (better known as Bay of Blood).

I'm kinda sad I watched the review, though. Not that it's not good, but I imagine that, if I'd watched the actual movie spoiler-free, that ending would have had me laughing my ass off.

So I watched Chick's Loose Canon of Death. It was overall disappointing compared to the other efforts, because too much of it felt like cataloguing his appearances in modern cartoons (inevitably a sample of the mentions, no Animaniacs or Soul Eater) without a meaningful theme connecting them. The Grim Reaper is not so much a character or canon as a cultural icon, with the look consistent but not the personality or even role.

(One thing she didn't clarify was that in many Slav cultures, any personification must follow the grammatical gender of the noun in question, which is not the case in French.)

But I knew I was going to love it because it's the first time the Discworld has been featured at length on a TGWTG video. She went through both the novels and the adaptations. She brings up that this Death is said to not have emotions but clearly does; I put it down to him gaining human traits piecemeal and not admitting to it.

She could have mentioned the more obscure Piers Anthony. His On a Pale Horse is a good look at how an everyman off the street would react to taking up the role.

Stories don't tell us monsters exist; we knew that already. They show us that monsters can be trademarked and milked for years.

[up][up][up]I haven’t watched the review yet, but I have seen that film. And yes, when I watched it with a friend, the twist ending was a big laugh moment!

True. It's sad that Disney couldn't get the rights to Mort (and its author is now dead). I would still love to see Death be a legit character in a Disney animated film, even though we had characters that were close, Chernobog and Hades coming to mind.

Well the reason they couldn't get the rights is because it was either ALL the books, or none. And you know Disney, they don't like to dedicate themselves to anthologies unless it's Pixar or MARVEL, they don't like to repeat themselves for their own animated canon. Plus they weren't yet in the position to be the best in the business before Frozen came along yet.

[up][up] I don't.

If anything, the Sky One discworld films shows to me why it wouldn't work. You'd end up having to cut off so much of what makes the book clever (in their narrations) coz it doesn't translate to film, you'd end up with an inferior products.

I mean, it's not awful... but does it do anything better than the books did? No.

[up] Eh, as long as they have a decent script and a director with a distinctive visual sensibility, I believe it can be pulled off. In fact, I don't think the adaptation would have to be slavishly faithful to the books; a Disney version of Mort—set to be directed by Ron Clements and John Musker, no less!—would probably significantly differ from the source material, but at least it would be an interesting take on the book. (That's why so far the only one of the Sky One films I've seen was Hogfather, which I haven't even watch in its entirety—the movie didn't do anything interesting with the source material.)

The Rap Critic and Lady Jess review The Jazz Singer.

I think they give it a fair assessment. They don't overlook its strengths, but they're pretty clear that what was Values Dissonance back then was still also very wrong back then and now.

Watched that a couple hours ago. Found it pretty interesting (especially considering it's a film I'd been meaning to watch if only due to its historical significance but hadn't yet). Conclusions discussed at the end definitely justified this analysis.

From what I saw after glancing at her channel, she seems to focus largely on reviews of older movies, like mostly pre-'40s it looks like.

Heh, I actually have a friend who has a similar show.

If I may ask, what exactly went down with Channel Awesome and Obscurus Lupa? She got fired for missing a Skype call, but she wasn't completely innocent about everything, and now apparently Doug Walker is a jerk, what happened in the past few months?

EDIT: To clarify, I heard a little bit about Lupa's departure from months back, and I knew it was somewhat controversial, but I didn't know the full details until a couple people started posting comments on the Critic's Smurfs review about how the Walker Brothers are "corrupt" (and some hashtag saying "I stand by Lupa"). Then I went on the Critic's YMMV page, and apparently Doug Walker (and this is from this post on Lupa's tumblr: http://obscuruslupa.tumblr.com/post/118561679812/what-happened-with-you-and-doug-i-thought-it-was) is a pretty big jerk in her eyes, which is against most of what I've heard and seen of the guy. My question is...what happened? All I know about is a Skype thing because of midrolls that I felt was kind of dumb but not Doug's fault, but now it is?

IIRC, the guy acually in charge of the whole TGWTGS site wanted to talk to her on Skype. Lupa wasn't there and 15 minutes later he threw a tantrum, kicked her off the site and deleted all of her videos.

[up] See, this is where I'm confused, since I've heard about Lupa reblogging some leaks of those Skype conversations, Rob Walker supposedly saying Patreon was a slap in the face (and then the leaks proved otherwise), and according to the tumblr link, Doug is a selfish smug jerk or something.

I'm not gonna comment on the whole Doug part considering my own thoughts on his videos, but, here's the details of it from Lupa's side at least.

[up] And your thoughts on Doug's videos are good or bad? I still watch the newer Critic videos (never watched the vlogs, never intend to), but I'd never peg Doug as being a smug jerk like Lupa says he is. Thanks for the link though.

[up] Understandable, but Doug still makes good videos every so often (I liked his review of The Smurfs that he recently did). I still don't believe what Lupa said was accurate since...well, no one else has said Doug is like that.

I don't think Lupa accused Doug of being a smug jerk, exactly. I think she said he was a "manchild" who turned a blind eye to his brother's dickery and people's grievances so he could tell himself everything was peachy.

Eh, on otherhand Lupa seemed rather spiteful about it at the time, so I wouldn't take everything she says as 100% truth either. Usually in situations like these, both sides are at fault :P

Anyway, seriously, don't talk about people's private lives, its nasty stuff and is really gossipy.
