Chapter 5's pretty hard! Haven't beaten it without anyone dying yet. Most recently I managed to get it down to just the boss, but I screwed up and misjudged how resilient my squishy magebait would be...

Yeah, the trouble is having to get Maribelle and Ricken to safety, since they start halfway up the map vertically and neither are exactly good at taking hits.

I sure said that!

Strange. I think I handled it pretty well.

Though it has been a while. Maybe I died a lot and just forgot.

Ricken's actually pretty good; you're right that he can't take a hit, but he comes with a second-tier tome and kills wyverns dead.

Which would be great if the Wyvern Riders weren't at the very top of the map and he starts surrounded by Fighters and Myrmidons.

I'm saying you need to send a Cavalier or Fredrick up the first slope ASAP.

Wow

... Though I'd argue one of the indoor fog-of-war chapters of Thracia would have been even better.

The best way to save Ricken and Maribelle is to have Lissa use the Rescue staff you got in Donnel's paralogue.

Wooooooow. That Emmeryn one.

I don't remember what I do but I never use a Rescue Staff or Frederick and can save them with no real problem. You can keep them out of range of the enemies for two turns, I think, and that should be just enough time to rush about half of your army up to them (while the rest pick off the enemies to the west).

Anyone notice this? In Genealogy we never actually meet Arvis's puppet governors of Verdane, Silesse, and Augustria, and Seliph never fights them. It's simply mentioned that the people overthrow them themselves after learning of Seliph's successes.

Presumably because it would have been obvious filler in a game where chapters are like three hour marathons.

And another random question: did Sephiran outright manipulate Lekain, or did he simply seize on the opportunity that presented itself after Plan A (Ashnard) failed? It seemed more like the latter to me, but several sites insist it was the former.

I like it. It reminds the player that the common people can accomplish great things when roused to action. It also somewhat mitigates the problem of The Main Characters Do Everything.

Chapter 5 is where I broke my no Pair Up rule.

Funnily enough, from a brutal mess, it became both a slog and a cakewalk.

The first time I did it, I used pair up to save Ricken, since I skipped all Paralogues. A sufficiently strong unit can run up the ramp and beat up the Myrmidon at melee range such that even if he doesn't die on player phase, hopefully he dies on enemy phase. There's one safe spot where Ricken can pair onto Maribelle and not get attacked. Move Sumia up to the top of the cliff.

On the next turn, if the Myrmidon is cleared out, Maribelle can move south to another safe area (hopefully just at the edge of enemy range) and transfer Ricken to Sumia. Barring having three pairs, two of which are completely wrecking the top and the other the bottom (increasingly unlikely the higher the difficulty), there won't be enough time for Sumia to nab Maribelle. Hopefully the strong unit can then clear out the right side and move Maribelle behind it. She can even go adjacent and heal if there's only one 2-range enemy alive, since they'll all be magic users and a Troubadour's Res should be able to tank a hit. If she would somehow be in danger, have someone else at the ready to pair her onto.

Note that this strategy is pretty sketchy on Lunatic+, because Pass.

Tangential fun fact: When I do Lunatic speed runs, Ricken and Maribelle aren't worth the time to save because I get their items post-battle if they die and I typically only run Avatar/Chrom, so it's nigh-impossible to keep them or anyone else deployed alive, anyway, so I just let them get murdered in the face.

Just a little nitpicking about Awakening so far: how every chapter objective is either Rout Enemy or Defeat Commander (which TBH might as well be the same thing seeing as how the enemy units like to bum-rush your squad in full force). People were complaining about Shadow Dragon/Heroes of Light and Shadow being nothing but Seize Throne, but this is hardly any better. At least Seize chapters encourage a bit more creativity as to how the player approaches the map IMO.

I have some more choice words to say about Awakening, but I'll save them for after I finish the main campaign and play through a bit of the DLC.

Well, one Paralogue plays out like a Defend/Survive chapter so there's that. But yeah, I don't like the lack of objective diversity either.

Honestly, Defend chapters never really felt all that fun for me and Seize chapters usually devolved into Rout/Defeat Commander chapters anyway, since there was always a boss sitting on the Gate/Throne/whatever and you inevitably wanted as much experience as possible anyway, so it just added an extra step of having to move the Lord over to the goal. The few times the series has tried really out-there styles, like Chapter 10 of Path of Radiance, it hasn't turned out all that great.

They should make it like Thracia 776.

When the chapter says 'Escape', you better fucking escape because if hang around, you WILL die. If the chapter says 'Defend', you better get fucking ready because you'll be at the breaking point when the chapter finally ends.

The chapter objectives mean something in Tharcia.

well it would be kinda nice if it were at least possible (but extremely difficult) to kill everyone in an escape mission.

i remember rondo of swords, the very first mission involves you running away from 3 sets of enemies, and 4 or 5 bosses, totalling up to about 20+ enemies who all mostly outclass the three characters you have at the time. and it was entirely possible to kill everyone >=]

most satisfying part of the game.

which..sadly meant it was a downhill ride after that. sad

Even in Thracia, you're able to accomplish side goals and get valuable items through good strategy. But when the game tells you to escape, the game fucking means it. One of the most notable examples is Chapter 19. If you do as the game says and just try to escape, it isn't so bad. Many of your units start in the bottom half and you've got 2 named characters but can only recruit one which requires Warp/Rewarp/Rescue usage and some villages to save and you can do all of that comfortable enough if you plan well. But if you to stick around and grind for experience, you'll get overwhelmed by endless (and I do mean endless) reinforcements. Thracia does not get easier as you progress through the game unlike most games in the series. The difficulty curve is near perfect.
