That is pretty cool kludge. It reminds me of that play station controller turret they slapped together.

I keep seeing STG-44's showing up in the middle east. Kind of odd because ammo for them hasn't been made in a long time and the last of them were dropped from service in Warsaw pact by the 80's with their usage outside of something like a single paratrooper regiment using them up to that point. I am wondering if it is a different barrel and bolt though. Not like ammo for the originals is made anymore or even the weapons. I am also wondering if it came from the Khyber pass fabrication shops. Those buggers make damn near everything. Maybe not well or reliable all the time but they make them and they usually work.

And answered my own question. There is a rumor that the supply line for the ammo is coming from a factory in Serbia. The guns themselves are not very complex to make and are indeed likely partially from Khyber Valley shops.

Common Ballistic Terms You Should Know.

I already knew a lot of them and had heard of some. A few I hadn't heard of and there's a few they forgot to mention such as Coriolis Effect, spin drift, and windage (as well as Kentucky windage!) to name a few. The wind one just gave me a detail I hadn't known the name to. I knew about crosswinds and what they can do (and how to measure wind direction between you and the target and how to see if there's a difference) but didn't know about full value or any of that.

And yes as the comments here say, Guns N Ammo magazine is kinda like Playboy, if you're reading it for the articles you're doing it wrong.

ROFLMAO. That is probably the funniest description of that magazine I have ever heard. I will have to check the terms list when I get home.

It's got a bit of aesthetic charm but it's still a neutered rifle.

How, exactly? The biggest thing I'm seeing is the lack of pistol grip.

It's a semi-auto rifle with a older style stock. Nothing neutered about it. Looks a little odd but nowhere as ugly as some weapons get.

How, exactly?

If it's New York compliant, it means you can't swap mags without tools. Neutered.

No part of the NY SAFE act which this gun was aimed at being acceptable for requires fixed magazines or "bullet buttons" like you are describing Tom. Last I checked only California has such laws. The NY law is aimed at the magazines themselves limiting their capacity and introduces a registry.

I pulled up the NY fire arms laws from the NRA website no part of their gun laws requires the use of such a device. In fact if you look at all the "NY legal" AR's they have standard magazine releases. This includes the Black Rain NY Legal AR which was butt ugly.

There is also a vast world of difference from the state of New York which is what those gun laws are for and the city try learning the differences.

^ Typically when manufacturers make a "NY compliant" or "CA compliant" type firearm, they base it on the highest restrictions in the state be they local or state statute.

For New York, it's NYC that's the baseline.

Now if that particular rifle was built differently then it is different (and illegal in NYC). (Source of original.)

But if it is truly NY compliant, then it's gonna be modeled after NYC restrictions, not just the stuff out of the Albany statehouse.

No I am afraid not. Most do not make it to the strictest unless they have to. Especially when singular locations differ notably from the rest of a state as is the case of NYC. In fact this is a very common theme in pretty much all states. Unless the majority of the state adopts similar laws they are largely ignored. If it was NYC compliant they would simply mention it. NY compliant does not mean NYC compliant as you ironically demonstrated and numerous other products including several other fire arms and related products have demonstrated that they can be NY state law compliant and not NYC compliant. Both Black Rain and the Ares offer standard magazine ejection buttons off the shelf. Simply checking the product page would have given you the same information.

CA compliant is difference because it is the entire state and pretty much all fire arms products offer standard options readily and easily available off the shelf outside of California. Even then in California various non-permanently attached devices like the magnetic button and other related devices pretty much make the bullet button moot and to date are still legal.

Sometimes you don't have a choice, unless you want to look for another job. I don't live in Wyoming because I enjoy the weather, after all. grin

How hard is it to make a NY State legal rifle NYC compliant? Is that a bit of work the user can do in his garage, or something that has to be done at the factory or a trained gunsmith?

It would depend on the rifle in question. Realistically speaking you can buy the bulk of the tools you need for any gunsmith work short of few tools that are kind of expensive from a hardware store. In terms of standard maintenance, attachments, and common repairs the equipment is readily available. It is when you need to start doing limited fabrication work that it gets tricky. You start needing more complex machinery like metal cutting and shaping tools. Otherwise common tools and springing for the gauges and calipers which are the expensive part and their periodic calibration. You start wanting to do the serious customization work yourself like bead cleaning, solvent tanks, cutting, tig welding etc you are going to need a more elaborate set up.

Oh look how neutered this gun is out of the box./sarcasm

Yeah, we know. tongue

I was talking about FN buying them and H und K a few pages ago. I still think it's a rather good idea - both companies have some good gun makers still, but their managements are appalling.

I vote we nationalize Colt and keep the trademark alive kinda like a Springfield Armory. (The original one, not the other one.)

If for no other reason than historical preservation. It wouldn't have to make firearms anymore or do anything, just nationalize the whole thing and prevent the Samuel Colt brand from moving anywhere.

I vote scrapping the Colt name because the brand itself is toxic, sacking the management and letting FN Herstal run it as a new company, with FN Herstal USA as its new name. Wouldn't be the first well-known American brand to disappear, and it sure won't be the last.
