Because! I fell that those tropers not into the scene should check out Negativland, who take sampling up to eleven, twelve, thirteen, and fourteen before stopping.

The McLovins

3-man teenage jam band from Connecticut, achieved overnight internet semi-fame a bit over a year ago with a cover of Phish's "You Enjoy Myself". Disclosure: The guitarist is my first cousin, closest thing I have to a little brother. And yes, the singer (who is also the drummer) is not the greatest, but for a high school freshman and two juniors (I think...) you must admit they're pretty musically awesome, right?

This one goes out to Spain Sun: Самое Большое Простое Число.

Well, I wouldn't say they're very obscure among Russian stoners, apparently, but...

Vitro, don't even have their own fucking page on Wikipedia, they're that obscure.

An electronic band from the north of England who had one album and then sort of sputtered out and died. One of the members contacted me once on the comments of my blog, mainly because he was glad that someone remembered it. Apparently they split up because they got tired of being fucked over by their record label (Sony). He said he'd send me a copy of the master recordings of their unreleased second album if he could ever find them, but I never heard from him again.

Every time I listen to their one album (Distort) a part of me is sad that something this awesome died alone and unloved while T.A.T.U was topping the charts at the same time with inferior music because of the whole Russian Schoolgirl Lesbians gimmick.

Anyhow, here is my favourite track from the album, "Set it Down". Alas, being the single version, it lacks the full intro.

I should note that it's pretty much impossible to get this legally anymore so if you ever want a copy, let me know and I'll arrange something. Sony clearly couldn't give less of a shit about it.

Again with the data mining, dear Aunt?

Anyone here listening to :zoviet*france:? Great dork ambient. Devin Townsend from SYL pimped them, so I figure it's mostly Devy fanatics that listen to them.

Also, I'm trying to find anything by a band called Course of Empire on the interweb, but can't. Heard their stuff and it's amazing. Pretty surprising they didn't make it big, too. Anyone throw me a bone?

Aaaaaand Econoline Crush, a forgotten Canadian pseudo-industrial post-grunge band. The album the following song is from sucks, but their singles rule (like any self-respecting post-grunge band). If you ignore the typical lyrics, too. Strong singer, good riffs and production. If you view a couple in bed as NSFW, this video probably is.

Oh, and I discovered a netlabel called 20kbps. Being Exactly What It Says on the Tin, those of you on a 56k diet here (and those who are not, who are probably the majority) may uncover some good stuff here.

World's End Girlfriend is the rather odd project of a solo musician that ends up sounding like a combination of classical, ambient, post-rock, and Massive Attack style electronic. It's good stuff.

The Evolution Control Committee are one of the best bands evar.

Yet nobody seems to have heard of them. I am prepared to remedy this.

^ I've seen them on Ishkur's guide to electronic music, if that counts.

If you're into shoegaze or Cocteau Twins, you'll like School of Seven Bells.

Sorry, couldn't figure out which one of their songs to post. Pick a random one, I guess.

Seconding the Evolutionary Control Committee. That shit's amazing. I also second Cibo Matto, since they're pretty obscure (even though some of their songs were in Jet Set Radio Future and Buffy). "Birthday Cake" and "Know Your Chicken" are their best songs, in my opinion.

I guess they're not "really" obscure, but I'm crazy for The World/Inferno Friendship Society.

None of my friends have heard of them though. I should get new friends.

I'm sure I'll be back for more, but:

Drunken Boat. There's a Drunken Boat that formed in the 00's and still exists, and a completely different Drunken Boat that broke up in the 90's, and the latter is who I'm talking about. They were kind of an arty indie rock band. Sometimes they remind me a bit of Sonic Youth, Slint, early Modest Mouse  *

, and maybe The Fall. Sometimes they're just indescribably weird - the song "Dream Boat" is two minutes of an old couple reciting dadaist dialogue and one minute of the band playing one herky jerky measure of music over and over like a broken record, for instance. Here's a live performance of "Skull Crusher", and a fan video for "Home".

Jenny Dee And The Deelinquents. They're actually pretty popular locally. Very retraux soul/girl group music. They're lots of fun live, and do an awesome motown-ized version of "Shake Some Action" by The Flamin' Groovies.

Super Time Pilot. The male half of this duo, Rob Potylo, is a pretty prolific solo artist too, but this is possibly the most polished, accessible thing he's been involved with so far. The female half, Nikki Dessingue, has a couple of projects of her own I really ought to finally check out. Playful indie folk with male and female vocals. They broke up pretty quickly but still got an album out, and said album is finally available on itunes if you look it up. There's more on their myspace, but here's a song called "Real Nice Rock"

There's an awesome scene in my hometown of San Francisco, I guess the best way to describe it is a kind of psychedelic garage rock. Girls is the band that's achieved the most fame, but there are a ton of other cool ones.

Zeehas; 12 Wait. They're kind of their own weird combination of synth-pop and avant-garde noise. They only had one self-released album that's out of print, but it is apparently still acquirable from interweb sources if you look hard enough. Here is a youtube video that's kind of a medley of a few of their songs:

Fun fact: while I knew they were a duo to begin with, until I found this video I had no idea they were trading off vocals on songs.

The most obscure band I listen to literally only has one song, as far as I know. When I used to frequent Game FA Qs a lot, I was on one of the social boards and a user posted a song by his band, and it was pretty damn good. It was called "Falling in Reflection" by Spoken by Ghosts. Here's a link if anyone wants to listen.

Bull of Heaven (http://www.bullofheaven.com/) is a drone and ambient band with insanely long song lengths. Makes for good background music, if you're interested in that kind of music.
