Self-explanatory. Bands you think are damned awesome but nobody you've asked has heard of them.

For me it would have to be Einstürzende Neubauten, and Buckethead. A little less in the latter, because he was you know, in guitar hero. And stuff.

The artist DJ Dano is, quite simply, awesome, but even the most hardcore D&B and hardstyle fans I've met haven't heard of him. Some of the stuff he's done:

Definitely Gods of Shamisen, for me.

Though they're one of the more popular obscure bands. Probably for the exotic instrument.

I've never thought of Einstürzende Neubauten as obscure, but that might be goth/rivet myopia on my part.

In my book, obscure means so unknown you can't even pirate it. I don't know very many artists at all like that.

The two that popped into my head the fastest probably say something about my sexuality . . .

I've been trying my damnedest to pimp Betty Davis, The Rotary Connection, and Honey Cone both on and off line. All three are 70s soul/funk (with Honey Cone being more on the pop side) and it is a damn shame they've gone unsung.

Is Infected Mushroom obscure?

Paraphrased from an actual conversation:

Me: My new roommate is pretty cool. He loves music, but his taste is a bit more mainstream than mine...
Ryan: Dude, everybody's taste in music is more mainstream than yours.

The single most obscure band I listen to would probably be Runforyerlife.

Anyway, my other usual suspects:

  • Gileah and the Ghost Train
  • Havalina Rail Co.
  • Xera

I didn't write any of that.

The Veils. Here's "Vicious Traditions" and "Calliope".

The Human Abstract, which I just discovered last week. "Procession Of The Fates''.

Pink Floyd could not BE more well known, but no-one except me listens to anything before Dark Side of the Moon... does that count?

No, because Echoes was awesome, and "Interstellar Overdrive" and "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun" are absolute classics.

A large percentage of things that I listen to are fairly obscure. But right at the moment, I'd say the following were among the most obscure I have in my collection:

  • Nisennenmondai (Japanese Krautrock/Disco)
  • Ohbijou (Canadian Indie)
  • Peter Broderick (Minimalist Piano/Violin, almost Classical)
  • This Town Needs Guns (Math Rock/Indie from Oxford)
  • Cats and Cats and Cats (London Art Punk)
  • Mother Vulpine (Rock band from Leeds, made one EP then broke up, former lead singer now in a similarly awesome band called Dinosaur Pile-Up)

P.S - Melloncollie, I have the latest album by The Veils, Sun Gangs. It's awesome.

The Dirtbombs are pretty unknown, and pretty awesome. They're my music snob band. I name drop them when I feel like I can't keep up with the hipster jargon.

Mogwai aren't that obscure are they? Or Explosions In The Sky, for that matter... or maybe I overestimate the number of people who listen to Post-Rock. Hmm.

Anyways, I dunno how obscure Mew and Dirty Projectors are considered, but both their new albums are made of win.
