A Game of Gods: A Multiversal Challenge

"So, wait, Gordon," said Sub-Zero, "what will happen if we don't succeed at stopping this war?"

"If we don't?" Gordon asked. "The Combine attack earth, defeat every military on the planet and conquer it. Humanity loses if we don't succeed today."

Rey reached out to grip Gordon's wrist, pulling him around to face him. "But if we succeed, what if that changes all your history? What if it...if it fixes it that...I don't know, but you realize we'd be changing everything, right? I just...want to make sure you know what we're getting into. I know you're going to do what's right regardless, but..."

"Changes history? That's why I'm doing it, Rey," Gordon said. "I'm doing it so the past in my world changes... so earth can be free... So Alyx doesn't have to grow up fighting for her life."

The Doctor in the Common Room sighs and facepalms. "Gordon! It's a Fixed Event! It must happen for your universe to turn out the way it does! It'd be like killing Buzz Aldrin or stopping Pompeii! It doesn't work Gordon!"

Rey studied his face a second, then nodded, letting go of his arm, but smiling just a bit. "I knew you'd say that." He nodded. "Is there any place we could find a layout, so we'd know where we need to get to in there?"

"If we can find one of their matience synths, we can get the data out of that," Gordon said. "And then when we do that, we'll just need to follow the layout. ... Has anyone been keeping a lookout?"

"I have, but since I don't really know what to look for..."

"A Fixed Event?" said Sub-Zero. "Can you think of any Fixed Events from my realm?"

"If it's not one of us, it probably wants us dead...what was your name?"

"I do not know of your universe. I heard about Gordon's universe which is why I guessed."

Red entered the portal and aided in the battle against the Hunters and Striders. He then followed Gordon.

"So...how do we take it down?" he asked.

"My name is Kimimaro, last surviving member of the Kaguya Clan."

"Nice to meet you. I'm Rey. This fellow behind me in the fancy metal suit is Gordon. For the moment, he's the fellow in charge. What we're doing now is trying to save his world from the evil monster things on this world."

"I overheard some comments. These... Combine... actually managed to conquer an entire world?"

"Too bad," said Sub-Zero. "I wanted to know if I really needed someone to trick Scorpion into thinking I killed him. I wasn't the one who went on that long trip to get an amulet and then had to steal it back to stop the apocalypse and killed Scorpion on the way. Are either of those something like a Fixed Event?"

—Saren wandered the streets, idly observing all the things that crossed his path, killing the few life-forms that didn't move from it. He eventually caught up to the rest of the group, moving as quietly as his armour allowed, and spotted the agitated Doctor Freeman. So I'm in His universe now? This will be irritating.—

Freeman. Planning on changing something on your world too?

"Stopping the apocalypse maybe. I don't think the personal history one is a Fixed Event though."

Rey glanced to Saren, frowning slightly. "For the better, if we can pull it off."

"Yeah, Saren. We're bringing this planet down," Gordon said. "The Combine aren't ever going to get a chance to get to earth."

"Alrighty... Let's get this show on the road."

Spriggan shouldered his silenced assault rifle.

"Wait," said Sub-Zero, "won't we be going back to the Silverrealm first? I was starting to really enjoy that one. I mean, we haven't finished our business there."

"I know I would," said Sub-Zero. "I'd make sure the Lin Kuei never turned Smoke into a cyborg. Cyrax and Sektor were willing participants, but Smoke...wasn't. But wait...if Smoke wasn't a cyborg, then he might not have kicked me into the portal and dropped me off here."
