A thread where we can ask each other what to watch, and give each other suggestions. You may have seen similar threads for Anime/ Manga, Video Games, Music And Media in general

I want to watch something with good swordplay and fight choreography.

Have you seen Hero?

Or Red Cliff?

Are you looking for an Asian movie or more of a swashbuckling sorta deal?

Never seen Hero or Red Cliff. I'll get on it.

I'd like an even mixture of One-Man Army and one on one sword fights. Any setting is fine.

That sounds like a Kill Bill kinda mood you're in, my friend. Or, to a lesser extent, Planet Terror. The heroes of both are total and complete badasses, and come equipped with swords. :)

But yeah, Hero is a fantastic film. It's Zhang Yimou (the same man who directed the Chinese opening ceremony at the last Olympics), so the use of color in it is AMAZING. Seriously, you'll see what I mean even from the trailer. That being said, Hero is not a wall-to-wall action sorta thing. It's a fascinating film. Think Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. They're in the same genre, but I like Hero more.

Red Cliff was directed by John Woo, and though I have only seen the truncated cut (the original ran for like five hours, mine was 2 and a half), it was super fun, and the fight choreography was fantastic in the typical, extravagant this-is-completely-awesome-and-unrealistic" sort of way.

Either way, both come recommended, but Hero is the better film, while Red Cliff is more fun to kick back and soak in.

Seconding Kill Bill.

I'm in the mood for some extremely dark and/or cynical comedy, in the vein of In The Loop for example.

Looking for a good film to Netflix instantly right now with some friends. Something dramedy-ish, or dark comedy ish. Or something like Judd Apatow but without the fratboy humor.

Vampires Kiss is quite possibly the funniest movie ever made. If you find that video of the best/worst moments from Wicker Man hilarious, then you'll love it.

Scotland PA is a very good dark comedy, though it takes a little bit before it gets really funny.

Looking for a cyber punk/scifi movie that isn't blade runner, the matrix, 12 monkeys or dark city. Or Wall-E. But possibly in the style of any of those.

Post apocalyptic isn't necessary but welcome. Just need more exposure to the genre.

There is other cyberpunk besides those?

Melee fights: Versus, The Legend Of Fong Sai Yuk (also known as The Legend), Ong Bak 2, Blade and Blade 2

Good Cyberpunk: Johnny Mnemonic, eXistenZ, Avalon, Battle Royale

There's also a good pile of Japanese splatterpunk entries like Machine Girl, Tokyo Gore Police, and Tetsuo The Iron Man with similar themes, and more anime than I can shake a stick at (Ghost In The Shell). And then there's more mediocre/corner case stuff like The Gene Generation and The Sixth Day.

Hope that helps.

Only vaguely familiar with terms like Cyberpunk, but I think animated noir Renaissance fits in there too. It's OK.

Speaking of animation, the french (I think) hybrid CGI/film movie Immortal is very strange, but also quite cyberpunk, with alien/supernatural overtones.

Any film similar in subject matter or total insanity to Scott Pilgrim Vs The World?

[up][up][up] Try Cityhunter. It's a Jackie Chan film based on the manga of the same name, it's absolutely insane, and contains some of the zaniest stuff ever put to film. It's not as good as Scott Pilgrim Vs The World, but it is in a similar vein.

^That, plus it did live-action Street Fighter before the actual film did. And did it better. : D

Something similar in humor to Freeway. One of those "dat is some fucked up shit" kind of films. Rule of Cool would also be nice. Anyone have any suggestions?

@Cyberpunk: Strange Days. Check it out. It's pretty decent.

@Zany Scott Pilgrim-esque film: Kung Fu Hustle is a really surreal, quirky, Looney Tunes-esque kung fu comedy.

@Schitzo: The Breakfast Club, although you might have already watched it. I also recommend other great Hughes flicks like Pretty in Pink and 16 Candles.

And if you're not a Hughes fan, I don't think you can go wrong with The Outsiders or Dead Poets Society, though they might be verging more on drama than comedy.

Also, could anyone recommend me some films that are similar in style to Inglorious Basterds? Don't really mind excessive bloodiness as long as there's some humor in it. Some good Tarantino recommendations would be nice too. Thanks!
