Christopher Lee is already The Jabberwock, though. Can't make him Smaug, too.

But it would be AWESOME! And the Jabberwock didn't have many lines, anyway.

I know I want Liam Neeson in everything, but does anyone think he could make an awesome Bard, the bowman?

Hell, give him some more time and he'd make an awesome Gandalf for future interpretations of the concept.

I like Liam Neeson, but I think he's probably a bit old for Bard.

I am given to understand that Jackson originally imagined The Hobbit as two films. I don't recall where I read this. Also, the full troll sequence in Fellowship was a deleted scene included on the extended edition, so it could be considered of questionable film canon if it becomes necessary to cut parts out.

The animated version of The Hobbit managed to include most of the book's major sequences, so I don't see why the live action film can't.

The trouble with Jackson doing The Hobbit is that The Hobbit is a different sort of story—it's a fairy tale, not an epic. It does have epic elements, particularly near the end, but the whole scope and feel of the story is not like that.

Also, I don't trust him to be making up large swaths of new material, however curious I might be about what the wizards were doing at the time, and however much I might like to see Radagast in a movie.

I am still in the position that I will believe this movie is being made when I actually see it.

^^^^^^^High five! I am also in the habit of casting Liam Neeson in everything, because he's so awesome. I'm still mad he's not going to be in Harry Potter.

The original thought was to split it into two movies, one being the majority of The Hobbit and the other being a "bridge" to the trilogy using Tolkein's notes and supplemental material from Christopher Tolkein.

I'm not sure what they decided to run with.

Wait, so one of these films will be a totally fresh, non-Tolkien-inspired story? That... could be pretty epic...

[up] If they end up doing that, yes. I am not sure if they're going with two films or not right now.

I'll be interested if Jackson gets dropped and del Toro by some miracle comes back on board.

I'm not watching anything that has Jackson's name on it, ever again.

Jackson's got a sizeable Hatedom composed of people who feel he ruined LotR. I've sometimes felt that way but in the end I realize that the films were a Pragmatic Adaptation. Anyway, it would feel very different if he didn't do The Hobbit, and I think I'd enjoy returning to that world under his direction than anyone else's.

There were some differences between the books and films, but they're incredibly natural. I can't actually think of any way those changes could've been done better. Jackson turned 1200 or so pages of description into 10 hours of well-paced, entertaining films that were very true to their source material; if that isn't a successful adaption, I'm not sure what is.

Sure as hell beats out the animated version and the planned Beatles adaption.

Jackson made King Kong and The Frighteners, and produced District 9.

He could do nothing but punch babies for the rest of his life and he'd still be an okay guy in my book.

Don't forget Heavenly Creatures and Forgotten Silver.

Back on The Hobbit. I keep hearing stuff on this Martin Freeman character who is set to play Bilbo. Anyone know anything about this actor, because the name is unfamiliar to me.

He's a regular on The Office (British version) and played Arthur Dent in The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy film adaptation.

I think he'd make a good Bilbo.

As far as I can recall, the only role I've seen him in is Arthur Dent in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy film.
