Well... posting here for analysis and possible improvement.

Staryu Line

Morphs [Oak Catalog #]

  • Staryu [120]
  • Starmie [121]

Physical Description

Staryu and Starmie are echinoderms, and specifically starfish; they are among the few Pokémon that lack visible eyes, the other being Zubat.

Staryu are a tan-brown in color, with a golden formation forming the bulk of its body mass and disappearing behind its body; in the center of this formation is a bright pink organic gemstone; the core, which provides it and its evolution with its myriad abilities and can be seen as its lifeforce.

Upon evolution, Starmie turn deep violet, and the core now resembles a cut precious stone. It also gains a second star, resting upon its back; this second star is able to turn a full 360°.

Notable Biology

The core of a Staryu or Starmie is essentially its lifeforce; without it, they would shrivel away and die. The core acts as a signifier of its mood and health; a healthy Staryu or Starmie's core glows brightly, intensifies if under high emotion, and dims under sickness, shutting off completely at death. Shattering the core will kill it instantly.

Among the abilities provided and sustained by the core are:

  • Regeneration; if a limb or appendage is ripped clean, it can and will grow back in time, given that the core is intact. Starmie in particular are also renowned for their surprisingly high stamina, aided by its ability to restore its health in an instant.
  • Camouflage; though not quite as adept as Kecleon, they are capable of camouflage in their deep-sea home and other common environments, such as grassland.
  • Electrokinesis; extremely unusual among Water-types is the ability to harness lightning for offensive purposes; a great many Trainers go out of their way to train their Staryu or Starmie in this, despite the high risk and difficulty (given its natural vulnerability to such an element).

Not for nothing are Starmie given the epithet "the gem of the sea"; the core glows in the many colors of the rainbow (though red is predominant) and - due to the fact that a specimen must be dead to obtain it - can fetch very high prices on the black market.

Habitat

Like other watery invertebrates, they prefer to live in deep sea trenches or underwater caves during the daytime. At night, however, they freely float and drift along the surface, basking in the starlight; they seem to "connect" with the heavenly bodies in some unknown way.

Diet

Staryu and Starmie are filter-feeders, and feed on plankton. They are still capable of consuming Poffins, berries and other such sweets; the core will directly absorb the required nutrients on exposure.

Hazards

<TBD>

Social Structure

Staryu and Starmie live in large groups.

Apparently someone's been tampering with my entry on the Ditto Line.

EDIT: On second thought, it isn't all that bad, though I wish the person had asked first.

Perhaps we should put a disclaimer on the index that any and all edits to launched articles should only happen after consulting the original author? These are different form the usual articles in that they have been entirely written from singular authors and there is no openly stated area of freedom, such as a 'Vandalism' section on a Contributor's Page or the Examples portion of a Tropes page. I think we should keep the liberty of spell checking and fixing up grammar, but otherwise you shouldn't add stuff to another person's article unless you've gotten their permission first.

If that was in the thread, I missed it in indexing. And don't remember it in any way.

Seems well-written, though, omissions notwithstanding.

we do already have a disclaimer like that...as a footnote. We should probably make it a bit more noticeable.

Before I make anything new I plan to overhaul the entry for the Aron Line. I'll try to do it tomorrow after I finish my English and Calculus homework.

Whelp, I took the liberty of going off to give this thread's page a major overhaul. I apologize if I went a little too far in doing so...

Also, is The Librarian still working on that Riolu article? If not, I'd like to take a crack at it...

P.S.: Maybe we should identify the OPs of the different articles or something...

Eh heh... I think I stired up something. But thank you for accepting my Absol edit. I saw a blank space and my mind just ran off with it. I saw the conversion from a plains lion lifestyle to a mountain lion one, and tried to strike a medium. I put limited data on purpose, to show that maybe only one or two generations of Absol have been sucessfully bred in captivity. Absol's long lifespan naturally led me to think that pregnancies would be equally long (there's got to be a trope for that by now).

(to anybody doing the Riolu line, now Egyptian jackals seem to be just wolves, not other canid species; just a tibdib if you think it could be useful or add juice to the article. ;) )

Didn't someone imply that Ditto was a man-made lifeform? No. Just... No.

Also I say we nuke the Staryu article and make a (bigger) disclaimer saying that ALL entries must be first posted on this thread, for the sake of quality control. Which I personally don't think there is nearly enough of.

[up] The rule is that no Gen 5 entries are to be done until the games come out in the US. No exceptions.

Question: Those swirls on Poliwag's stomach - actually the intestines, or just a pattern?

Hopefully do that line tomorrow.

That is a reference to the fact you can see tadpoles' intestines if you look at their belly, so yes it is likely

Habitat and Social Structure are only going on the bare bones, so you should probably fix that up. Also, if the Aron line only eats iron, then they'd go out of business thanks to natural selection unless humans show up and keep them alive (kind of like a Panda).

[up][up] I don't see why they'd go extinct since Rhydon have a similar diet to the Aron line, and it is mentioned that iron isn't the only metal they can eat, just their most preferred one. I guess I can mention that they'll also eat iron rich soil and practice coprophagia, since iron ore would already count as rock.
