What interesting things have you only recently learned about?
To be clear, this is about things which have been true for some time and you only recently learned about, not things that only happened recently. In particular, recent deaths of celebrities and other high-profile individuals should go in the General RIP Thread.
So, what interesting things have you guys...and gals...only recently learned about?

I remember that happening. What really gets me is that Gore was initially not going to fight the results. Had a nice concession speech and everything. Somebody urged him to call for a recount, and we all suffered for it.
Sadly, I suspect we may be in for at least another month of drama.
A friend of mine was telling me about how it could go if there's a true deadlock, how we may end up with the Senate & House trying to break the tie. Which would be really interesting.
Well that was a special case (Florida had something to do with that).
iirc, the final vote depended on Florida. Since Gore got the majority of votes, the US made Gore the President. About an hour later, they had to recount since "the polls were malfunctioning". After the recount, Bush became President. And look how well THAT turned out.
"People always say that you should follow your dreams... so I'm going back to bed" -meThe recount was actually still underway when the Supreme Court - which, at the time, had a Republican-leaning majority - decided to call the election, putting an end to the vote count. It was a strange decision from them, but Gore graciously conceded to it.
It's entirely possible that, had the Supreme Court decided to sleep another night or two on it, the recount would have found Gore the winner in Florida, in which case he would have been President.
Quod gratis asseritur, gratis negatur.Trump will be the oldest president if he wins.
Peace is the only battle worth waging.Mnemonics for the bass clef are Good Boys Do Fine Always for the lines and All Cows Eeat Grass for the spaces.
Bush's campaign actually sued when it was shown they weren't winning Florida, leading to a highly stupid decision by the SCOTUS to agree with them that it wasn't right and make Bush president.

The stem of a music note extends upward if it is below the third line of the staff, and downward if it is on or above the third line.
You'd think that having been in music classes throughout elementary and middle school I'd have been taught this stuff.
It won't happen this year because Hillary is losing in a landslide and that won't trigger recount laws (think .01% margins).
The amount of people that can't read a sign in all caps posted in front of their face is too damn high (today's my first official day of work).
While I knew that some lizards can lose their tails to escape predators, I did not know those tails could move independently for a short time afterward...until I saw a lizard tail thrashing around on the sidewalk.

Today I learned that Americans are actually, literally insane.
Today I learned that your parents, family movies, young adult stories, school, and police LIE to you when they say bullies never win!
So maybe it's Pence we should worry about more.
Trump's an idiot who doesn't know anything beyond a 10 year old at governing. Pence is not, and he'll likely be the de-facto president,.
Now known as Cyber ControllerWhich still scares me, because he's #mikepence -_-
There was an article saying if Trump becomes elected, Obama won't move out of his home. This is clearly butt-kiss. What power will Obama have when he's no longer the President? Obama is planned to speak face-to-face with Trump this Thursday! PRAY that Trump gets even a LITTLE bit enlightenment of what the job takes!!!
Pence actually concerns me far more than Trump does.
Peace is the only battle worth waging.Yeah, his policies are arguably worse than Trump's and he knows what he's doing.
what do you mean I didn't win, I ate more wet t-shirts than anyone elseI'm kind of reluctant to judge her on the off chance she may have been involved in sex work. It may not have been entirely consensual after all.
However, hers and his comments are really surreal considered their entire run.
Another thing that concerns me is that the House & Senate are both Republican, which makes it more likely that e.g. gay marriage & Roe vs. Wade could be repealed.
Peace is the only battle worth waging. We need to get this back in order before this derails any further into politics.

I didn't know until today that apparently the 2000 USA election took an entire MONTH aftet election day to resolve. God I hope it doesn't take that long here, I can barely remember a time before this election. Please no more.
