What interesting things have you only recently learned about?
To be clear, this is about things which have been true for some time and you only recently learned about, not things that only happened recently. In particular, recent deaths of celebrities and other high-profile individuals should go in the General RIP Thread.
So, what interesting things have you guys...and gals...only recently learned about?

There's way too much Grumpy Cat merch available.
Most non-giftwrapped Amazon shipments with gift slips don't customize the message on the slip.
I had a Grumpy Cat iced cappuccino once. It was awful.
Is it really awful or is just a tongue in check?
An emoticon is also called an 'emogi'. I didn't know that until a month after I heard the term!
Emoji are actually a form of pictographic character that was originally exclusively used in Japan but have over the past few years been spreading worldwide, a large number of emoji glyphs being included in the Unicode standard.
Certain rules concerning the parties of a legal case (among them the rules of when a party has a personal duty to meet in court), are hidden away in the civil process law's section about evidence.

Join us in our quest to play all RPG video games! Moving on to disc 2 of Grandia!Midna - those symptoms you mention happen among men too, it's not uncommon to find a man who is having a heart attack be unable to communicate his problem. It's just that they tend to have a different focus in men, and a man having a heart attack may have very bad pain in the chest, where a woman may have none.
"Did you expect somebody else?"In Catalonia and neighboring areas, it's traditional to hide a defecating peasant figure somewhere in the nativity scene. That whole Wikipedia page is pretty funny, especially some of the "explanations" and this section.
Earth is the only planet inhabitable by Nicolas Cage. The American Museum of Natural History has a goddamn weird bias against mineralogy to such a point that they've allowed priceless photosensitive specimens to decay on their shelves and contaminate other specimens; entire displays are unmaintained and are coated with dust and the lights are burnt out. An acquaintance has mentioned that the staff disparages the exhibits because ". . .unlike dinosaurs, they were never alive."
This sentiment is shared amongst many museums. The Academy of Science in Philly sold most of their specimens to jewelers who cut them up into gems and sold them, while Phoenix just auctioned theirs on Ebay and the like.

"Thanks for the lesson. But I don't need you to tell me who I am."I am not the only person on the planet who likes "Achy Breaky Heart" unironically. As in, genuinely thinks it's a good song.

In other words we are fucked.
Unless we can figure out a good way to desalinate oceanic water..... Right? That's a solution on the table?
Also I was not aware the mineralogy section was so mismanaged, having actually visited it several times
