What interesting things have you only recently learned about?

To be clear, this is about things which have been true for some time and you only recently learned about, not things that only happened recently. In particular, recent deaths of celebrities and other high-profile individuals should go in the General RIP Thread.

Up to 99,8% of all light, huh?

That opens up whole new possibilities for metal album covers. How much more black could this be? Much, much more, apparently.

..you don't think the CIA uses rooms like that in sensory deprivation torture?

I wouldn't doubt it, though sensory deprivation chambers can also backfire pretty badly depending on how good someone is at meditating.

Because NASA is still testing it? And more importantly it's a waste of money. Probably.

@Jones Ah okay I was mostly just shocked because there was so many and it was so sudden, that's a very good point, we've been getting a lot of grasshoppers in lately too, but they usually have the obvious way of going through the door (their is a lot of them it's hard not to have some hop in), well to the broom again.

Xopher - in many cases they don't do stuff like that simply because it's far easier to just talk to them, and often what you get from a person under torture is at best unreliable and at worst made up so they'll escape it.

[up]Because they don't seem to be aware of the fact that quite often a criminal would rather it be over and done with.

I suppose accurate questioning is seen as too boring for broadcast. Having read a number of interviews by British police, it certainly isn't in your face, "we have forensics".

Suspect interviews are long, building up a picture piece by piece, asking for the suspect's version of events, open questions, all very calm, returning to points when they contradict themselves, or a known fact is incompatible with other known facts and/or the explanation.

Now that I am able to have a more intelligent reply

Sensory deprivation interrogation is considered a human rights violation. That one famous case was when everyone decided that Muslim guy isn't entitled to Geneva Convention human right protection.

The CIA isn't NASA, so they could just paint the room in 95% light absorbent black paint that's available on the market more then a decades ago. But we didn't hear about it.

Hussar - there's also the fact that in many cases, a criminal will just go "Yes, I did it" and then recall how he did it just because that way a judge and the system as a whole are likely to go easier on them, and the police will just keep it fairly short to get what they can for evidence.

And then it yells at me in Russian.

Somehow random Russian messages at the end of something make things appear infinitely more cryptic and deep that it probably is.

Oh really when?
