What interesting things have you only recently learned about?
To be clear, this is about things which have been true for some time and you only recently learned about, not things that only happened recently. In particular, recent deaths of celebrities and other high-profile individuals should go in the General RIP Thread.
So, what interesting things have you guys...and gals...only recently learned about?

Cold turkey's getting stale. Tonight I'm eating crow. One of the most popular Mexican Regional music bands, Intocable (that could fill arenas with thousand of dancing couples hearing to them) where from Zapata... Texas O o
Speaking of Texas, I recently learned that the people that formed the Republic of Texas were pro-slavery people from the US south that originally went to Mexican Texas because they feared US would abolish slavery soon... only for Mexico to abolish slavery almost immediately after they settled in Texas, years before the US would.
This was the main reason why USA decided not to get the rest of Mexico.
Just think it, if USA took the rest of the Country the pro-slavery states would had been in a sandwich between anti-slavery states, so the Civil War would had been started earlier and probably with less possibilites for pro-slavery to grow more.
Indeed one factor that prevented pro-slavery to win was the victory of the Mexican Army against the French one in Puebla that prevented France to establish quickly a foreign government (this saved time for the Union to have a new enemy south of the Confederation).
Probably the American people celebrating Cinco de Mayo with tacos and margaritas was because of that. For the Mexicans it was only Tuesday.

Basically girl Beetlejuice and a big candle, but the skins are better than they sound. The musical version of Heathers never actually made it to Broadway. With how popular it is (and how similar it is to Mean Girls, a successful Broadway musical), I'd just assumed it was on Broadway.

The memetic lyric "¿Qué dirías si esta noche te seduzco en mi coche?" ("How about tonight I seduce you in my car?") is from a song by bachata singer Romeo Santos. I always thought it was from a reggaeton song.
