The end of the game is the end of the game. More narrative once you've escaped is pointless. Save it for a sequel.

[up][up]Because that idea is nonsensical.

Riddle me this: why would GLaDOS do that?

[up] That's also a good reason.

Sequel Hook. I didn't say make more game onto that one. Add one little scene and leave it there for the next game.

And why would G La DOS do it? Oh, I don't know, for the SCIENCE she lives for? Even with ten thousand new test subjects at her disposal, she'd gain a lot more knowledge (Which is what Science is out there to gather) by having an agent in the outside world.

And there's nothing saying she can't link her senses to a robot or another human and run a sequel that way anyway.

G La DOS is a small God happy with her little world. She never feels any need to really expand Aperture or even plunge its depths. Not to mention the entire reason for letting Chell go was that she wanted her GONE and OUT and Not Messing With Her Pretty Good Life.

EDIT: As for Science, Science is a Buzzword that lost it's real meaning a while ago as far as G La DOS is concerned. What happens on the tracks is more like intensive product testing that lost it's way a looooong while back. What is she testing exactly? How well human rats can run through a maze? She has not hypothesis, no real results, no goals of any kind aside from 'test forever'.

@Journeyman: Sounds like the subject for a nice little fanfic, but Valve gets to make games the way it wants to make them.

Yeah, I'm going to call that rude. This is an open forum for discussion, and if I have an idea about the game, I can talk about it to my heart's content.

1. G La DOS's programming isn't set in stone. She can delete parts of it, and computer cores can be added to alter it. There was a fucking SPACE core who, if he had been incorporated in G La DOS herself, would have made her want to be an astronaut. It's not that far a stretch for one of Aperture's programmers to make a core that sets G La DOS back on the path of real science.

2. We saw those fields. They were cultivated. We don't know how long Chell was out of action, it's possible for someone from the outside to break in and throw a monkey wrench into AS's facility.

Video game writers think up stories. There's really no reason for fans to shut other fans out of thinking up stories too. I made a pitch for shits and giggles, put my two cents in, and I was shushed. That's NOT civil.

[up]Still, G La DOS is sick and tired of Chell by now. Every time they meet, she gets nothing but misfortune lumped on her and she's the only one who can clean it up. With Chell gone, they both win, Chell gets her freedom, and G La DOS can go back to science, 100% free of Caroline holding her back. Besides, she doesn't need Chell any more, now she's got two little robots who DO listen to her and don't try to blow her up or put her in a potato.

We're being civil. We also happen to be criticizing your idea for its present flaws.

And it's constructive criticism, albeit one that targets such a large and present part of the idea that it seems harsh. If you don't want to deal with that, well, that's the issue with posting your idea for all to see.

Agreed. It doesn't have to be Chell. She could create more robots for the task, or even learn from her mistakes with Chell and NOT test on other human subjects against their wills? I'm sure somewhere in those ten thousand new test subjects there'd be a thrill seeker or fellow enthusiast for product testing who'd die or kill for a chance to see Aperture products used in the outer world.

ETA: Fighteer wasn't civil. He was insulting. Using the word "little" is a clear insult meant to dismiss something as worthless. He WASN'T picking apart flaws, he was throwing the whole topic in the trash outright.

Ugh, that sounds like PTSD G La DOS for sure. I hadn't actually played much of the multiplayer so I never saw that.

She could still use robots for it.

[up]She's got the two. It's in one of the DLC courses, she reactivates Atlas and P-Body because a "monster" has taken up lodgings in her core, and all the test subjects died during her training course.

The last Portal thing focused more on Cave Johnson and his many alternate reality doubles.

[up][up][up][up]Not... really. You're reading too much and getting offended by too little, methinks.

Also, your Hand Wave for as to why G La DOS would go forth and do science is an interesting one, but it raises the question of why, after all that happened in this game, would she ever let her personality be directly modified by another core.

She wouldn't necessarily have to let anything happen. That field outside was cultivated by someone. You could argue it was G La DOS, but that supposes personality traits that are no more apparent than a thirst for real science.

So that makes it likely there are other people around. If they're advanced enough, they might break into AS and go mucking things up like Chell did.

A lucky determinator of an idiot breaks in, finds a nice shiny ball and somehow makes it to the computer chamber. Sticks the ball in an empty socket, and there you go.

That's kind of how the game makes Chell out to be anyway, so it's not a stretch.

ETA: Also, I'm not reading too much into it at all. Valve making the games the way they want is kind of blindingly obvious. The only reason to play Captain Obvious there is to tell someone off. Hell, his first post wasn't even an attempt at criticism, it was a flat no like he was talking to a kid.

It's not really any worse than waking people up and using them to combat an evil tyrant who's likely to succeed in killing them.

Or intentionally going up to someone and ripping them out of their home, then locking them up in something too small to fit them. You know, effectively drugging them. Making them unable to act, so they end up getting PTSD from a fucking bird.

I get what you're saying about rape implications, but there's other offenses that should get the same horrified reactions. Like rendering someone helpless and incapable of facing down even something that tiny.

Well, Rape Is a Special Kind of Evil, after all. And from what I've heard, that's Truth in Television.

Not to mention that you're doing something with very unfortunate implications to... force her to act in a much more compliant way just so your story can play out the way you want it to. Hm.

Only because people think she wouldn't do it on her own anyway. Personally I don't think it's even needed. She has PTSD. She sent her robots to deal with an enemy. It's not a stretch to think she'd make more and send them to kill off all the birds. And do Science at the same time.

Besides, who's to say she wouldn't alter her programming herself? If Chell could be a menace, so could any number of people outside.

[up][up] And actually . . .

I'm not the only one. The entire story is plagued by implied rape, it's just dressed up in comedy so that people ignore it.

Caroline was forced into that machine by her boss, and the only reason we don't have an audio clip of it happening is because people caught just how much like rape it really sounded. And after she woke up, she was addicted to "testing" which wound up involving hurting others a lot like she was hurt.

G La DOS herself is very childlike. When kids are abused, they often turn into abusers themselves. So this childlike entity with the memories of a woman forced into computerized bondage takes out her anger and hate on others through something she's been forced into an addiction to.

Yeah, sounds like Rape Is a Special Kind of Evil is already present in the series to start with. They can dress it up as comedy all they want, Valve already went there.

You're forgetting that the implied rape scene was cut from the final product. All we know is that Caroline was forced into GLaDOS; we don't know the details — neither did GLaDOS, for that matter, until reminded of the fact. She's a composite AI, made up of a lot of different things — Caroline is just a part of that.

This need to turn everything into some sort of dark social allegory is annoying.

I outright stated that it was . . . The voice actors stopped it from even being finished. Considering Valve started it that way and never bothered to outright change it into something else doesn't mean it went away. They just buried it.

And people bury traumatic experiences all the time.

Honestly, your idea has gone from "flawed" to "flawed, and the Hand Wave to make it work is creepy", and your defense of this Hand Wave is making you look worse and worse.

My advice: realize that maybe this idea is a plot idea that isn't a good one (we all have them) and drop it.
