Here's an idea (while it's still Halloween):

What if we the spark in our brain we call conciousness and life dies out every nanosecond before a new generation of spark replaces it. Our memories are not really ours but just the collected memories of previous generations of electrical current in our brains.

Why do I fear death? Is it instinct? Or is it sentience? Or is it a phobia?

What is an answer to the word of death? Why do I feel so much intelligent when I feel like life isn't worth living vs. when I love being alive?

More seriously, death is something I have resigned myself to. I think that people who believe they can become immortal through some means are chasing a pipe dream.

At least at this point in history.

Still, I am glad I was born when I was.

Hmm...I've always had one idea that our souls were actually just thoughtless entities that can only remember the stuff the brain of their host remembers.

I'll think of a better way to word that later.

@C Banana — How would that be distinguishable from the situation as you intuitively know it? Since all we have access to is the current state vector of consciousness however defined, quantizing it seems rather pointless.
