They spoonerized "Potted Succulents" as a joke and both pretended that "Spotted Pucculants" are an actual thing.
The joke here feels like an actual couple in-joke you're not in on. So points for capturing that feeling, but kind of counteractive approach for a gag-a-day webcomic.

I'd be much more forgiving of such a boring strip if it didn't give me flashbacks to "ice cream kisses" and that whole week of strips where the punchline is "they're into each other."
In a vacuum this is fine, but it worries me since this can go so, so poorly.

What's precedent ever done for us?
Nah, the anime is filler-stuffed generally when it's a long-term ongoing manga and the anime has to keep 1-1 pace with chapters in order to not run ahead.
When it's not, the anime usually cuts down on filler, although as much as troll-series that seems to be, it can have gone either way.
