Mine would be Space Wolves, partially because they are my starting army, and partially because they are badass like hell, and probably the nicest chapter in the setting.
Other good chapters would be Salamanders, Black Templars and Dark Angels for various reasons.
And as for Chaos Space Marines, I would say Night Lords, I mean c'mon, who wouldn't like to be a Chaotic Evil Batman?
Also, Angry Marines.

Seriously though, my favorites would have to be White Scars and Space Wolves.
I would put Blood Ravens in my favorites, but recently, one of their Force Commanders are committing too much hair-esy, so they are below favorites.

Ferrus Manus me fave. Dog-Latin for Iron Hand. Non-seriously, the Depressed Marines. Don't even have to paint them.
Canon chapter? Either the Space Wolves because of their Chaotic Goodness, or the Dark Angels because of their green armour and mysterious mysteriousness. Non-Canon? Here's a little hint. They have a tendency to go into battle screaming this: FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU-
When in deadly danger, When beset by doubt, Run in little circles, Wave your arms and shout.
Serious: Tie between Space Wolves (SPACE VIKINGS FUCK YEAH) and the Dark Angels (Deathwings? An entire Marine group that wears special Terminator armor? YES PLEASE.).
Non-serious: Angry Marines and Lazy Marines. Hovercouches with missiles, people!

Serious: Blood Angels/Black Templars The Blood Angels srsly have some of the most bad fucking ass characters in the canon. I mean Mephiston is the only Angel to ever CONQUER the black rage, being buried under rubble for 3 days while suffering it as part of a death company. What does he come out as? Probably the most powerful Psyker in the Astartes who isn't a Primarch or the Emperor himself, and he's called The Lord of Death ffs. Not to mention having a Furioso Dreadnaught that is PERMANENTLY suffering of the black rage himself.
Non-Serious: ANGRY MARINES ARE ALWAYS ANGRY, of course.
Though I'm an IG player, I'll take a squad of Kasrkin/Stormtroopers over marines any day.
Amedras
Alpha Legion. Just as planned.
I don't have a good sig, does this mean I lose scene credibility?
Rainbow Warriors. They should bring them back and give them their own codex, Space Sharks too.
Dark Angels. All of that mysterious atmosphere, wings-related symbols and aura of medieval secret order IN SPACE. Oh, and the Ravenwing - I like speedy armies. Plus I've really liked the colour scheme. I've started an Ultramarines army once, but I've repainted them all to be Dark Angels, because I've liked the story of the chapter presented in White Dwarf so much.
From less-known chapters, I would go with Black Dragons. I like Cursed Founding generally, backstories are really cool.

Several years ago there was a series of large articles about all of the First Founding Chapters + Space Marine biology + Deathwatch. It was like seven or eight years ago.
It was called Index Astartes and it's available also as series of books
