Thoughts on the Paradox card?

[up]You can't add something you don't own to your hand, also the wording required to make that actually work would not fit on a single card. It's a convoluted mess, in other words. Which I guess was the point?

Regal Carp - U
Creature - Fish
Islandwalk
When ~ deals combat damage to a player, transform ~.
0/1
It is said that a carp that climbs a waterfall will soar through the sky unchallenged.

Waterfall Dragon
Creature - Dragon
~ is blue.
Flying, Hexproof
4/4
It is said that all dragons once dwelt in the sea and dreamed of clouds.

What is so amusing about this? Why do you take lives? How can you forget?

[up] Yeah, the model for that effect was Shared Fate - and yes, very much intended to be a convoluted mess that'd make Commander...interesting. When the being shown casting the spell doesn't know what the hell he's even doing...

Another Parallaxus spell.

  • Parallax Chaos UUBBRRGG
  • Sorcery
  • For each creature on the battlefield, create two tokens that are copies of that creature. For each enchantment in play, each player draws a card and discards a card. For each artifact in play, create a colorless artifact token called Gold which has "sacrifice this artifact: add one Mana of any color to your mana pool". Then randomly distribute all tokens and cards in play to each player's field until they have the same number of tokens and cards from before cards and tokens were re-distributed.
  • This suddenly became a bit odd. -Parallaxus

Blood Destruction - RG
Instant
Target creature you control gets +5/+5 until end of turn
At end of turn that creature gets -2/-2 until the beginning of your next turn.

[up] The math doesn't add up, if you take exiled cards into account the number you redistribute is less than the number of cards you are using for this effect and do not have a method for deciding which ones to leave alone.

[up] Just realized that.

I am having way too much fun with this. Actually playing a deck using these kinds of things would probably be maddening.

I think that Blood Destruction might also work if it only gives the creature -2/-2 until the start of your next turn, so that your opponent just gets a shot at it during their turn. It probably isn't a big deal, but I see a spell giving you effect A all of this turn, and then effect B for your opponent's turn and then yours as creating a memory issue for, like, prereleases before everyone is familiar with all the cards, you know?

Alternatively, depending on the set, it could also give -1/-1 counters at EOT. That'd fit the brutal name.

StephanReiken Since: May, 2010
#14457: Sep 14th 2017 at 3:46:08 AM

It would probably work, I was just kinda looking for a stronger drawback. At the same time, half the time people cast this is likely going to be on something that wouldn't survive the -2/-2 no matter how long it lasts.

Based on No Game no Life

True Love - 3U
Enchant Artifact Creature
You control enchanted artifact creature.
"Confirmation: 'Becoming one' -unique language involving epidermal contact. Act assumed to exchange 'hearts,' which Ex Machina lack. Analysis indicates unit can load 'heart' if act emulated..."

Poison Jubillee - 1BB
Enchantment
Creatures with deathtouch have infect.
Creatures with infect have deathtouch.
Drink and be merry, then be dead.

Not sure if this next one works:

Double Rainbow - WUBRG
Enchantment

I have a bit of a rules question: according to the Magic Comprehensive Rules, it's actually impossible for a card to say "creatures you control with power 2 or less have indestructible", since effects that grant abilities happen before power and toughness changing effects. (See: CR 613.1)

Would there be another way of designing a card that has more or less the same effect?

"Whenever a creature you control would be destroyed, if that creature has 2 power or less, instead it isn't destroyed"?

Also needs a damage-removal clause, otherwise you get locked into an endless loop where it keeps trying to die and failing.

"If a creature you control with power 2 or less would be destroyed, it gains indestructible until end of turn." This technically does the same thing and I don't think it's abusable.

Moonary, the Oldest Owl - 4UU
Legendary Creature - Bird Wizard
Flying
Whenever ~ becomes the target of a spell or ability an opponent controls, counter that spell or ability unless its controller pays {2}.
{T}: Scry X, where X is the number of Birds you control plus the number of Wizards you control, then draw a card.
1/5
He remembers ages past and future alike.

Hoot-enanny - 2UW
Enchantment
Bird creatures you control get +1/+1.
Whenever a Bird enters the battlefield under your control, you may scry 2.
You'd think being able to see the future would help them show up on time.

What would be the problem, Zen. Such an ability according the linked rules would be layer 6.

It's not 'impossible' But it leaves a quirk that would make it played wrong by most players in situations with continuous power and toughness modifers. In other words, an elf deck with coat of arms buffing 6 1/1 elves... because the game checks that modifier after it doesn't matter. They would be indestructible 6/6s.

First rule, the card text supersedes the rules. The rulings may say, once such a card was played and had rulings, that due to the way the card uses power and toughness it is applied after layer 7.

Self-Own (1R)
Sorcery
~ deals 1 damage to you and each creature you control.
"My client's credibility may have been affected by the massive public embarrassment he inflicted on himself through rank stupidity."

This card was designed to celebrate the last couple of days of Australian politics, which have seen a selection of asshats inflict hilarious embarrassments on themselves, the most amusing of which was probably One Nation screwing itself out of any presence in South Australian state government for the next few years by neglecting to actually register itself for the State election until after the deadline had passed.

Instant Karma - W

Hope Undone - B

Considering how weak the Golgothian Sylex is in comparison to how devastatingly powerful it is in story, here's a different version to more accurately reflect its capabilities.

  • The Golgothian Sylex 6
  • Legendary Artifact
  • 5, tap, destroy and exile all cards in play and all cards in the graveyard, then each player discards cards until they only have 1 card in hand. Until the end of the next player's turn, the hand size limit for both players is 1.
  • Few suspected the true power of this horrifying artifact, until it submerged Dominaria in its Ice Age.

'Cos their cards are shiiiiiiit...

Does it need to destroy the cards in play if they're going to get exiled?

I like the way that the mandated slow turn would capture the feel of an ice age.

Mice Age - 2BB

Whenever a Rat deals combat damage to a player, that player discards a card.
Somehow this is Urza's fault.

You guys know who never got a card?

  • Gix, Phyrexian Praetor 1BBBBBB
  • Legendary Creature - Praetor
  • Menace, Fear
  • Tap, 3B, all other players discard 2 cards from their hand.
  • Tap, BB, destroy target artifact or creature, then gain 2 life.
  • 6 / 6
  • Gix salaciously whispered into the newt's ear, his horrific grimace repaired, upgraded and whole, "Daddy's home."

Mightstone and Weakstone that aren't crap, huh? Hmm...

Mightstone - 4

  • Legendary Artifact
  • Tap: Artifact Spells cost 1 less to play until end of turn
  • Tap: Artifact Creatures receive +1/+1 until end of turn

Weakstone - 4

  • Legendary Artifact
  • Tap: Artifact spells cost 1 more to play until end of turn
  • Tap: Artifact Creatures receive -1/-1 until end of turn
  • Sacrifice Weakstone and Mightstone: Search your library for Thran Powerstone and put it into play as though it were just played. Shuffle your library afterwards.

Thran Powerstone - 8

  • Legendary Artifact
  • Controller's Artifact spells cost 2 less to play
  • All opponents' Artifact spells cost 2 more to play
  • Controller's Artifact creatures receive +2/+2
  • All opponents' Artifact creatures receive -2/-2
  • The ancient powerstone changed Dominaria forever.
