Episode 8 Act 2

We can barely see the TERRA pseudo-pyramid because of how strong the snow is. Itsuki is walking through a corridor with a clipboard or something in his hands, but then suddenly notices that the snow is actually coming inside the building. He walks up the stairs and notices Sayoko on the roof wondering why Itsuki is always so mean to her. Itsuki is quite surprised, and then Sayoko turns her head to show that the crystal Itsuki gave her has grown into a snowflake. Itsuki notices and states that he knew it, when, suddenly, the window(which I didn't notice, due to transparency; I guess they aren't on the roof after all), breaks and lets a huge amount of snow in. Then, suddenly, Sayoko jumps—oh shit. However, somehow, she survived the huge fall, and the ground around her starts to turn to ice in an expanding circle. I'm thinking that the Mulian we saw before the eyecatch possessed her.

Next, we go to the TERRA control room, where it's reported that the power generator has stopped functioning, and Kunugi switches to emergency power. White-haired jerk seems completely unaffected. Sayoko is outside, floating in the air and making huge ice crystals pop up in her wake. Ayato comes in, asking what is happening, and Haruka's explanation is that "It's them!" and Kim says something about quantum reactions. God damn, I am incredibly annoyed about the way "quantum" has turned into a buzzword. We then see Sayoko's snowflake necklace has grown an incredible amount and the ice is now growing around her, and is now growing bigger faster and faster. Is it making an entirely new dolem out of ice? Haruka says that the same D-1 pattern is found with this and the five-kilometer-tall dolem, so I was right, and it never actually died. Kunugi, as is the wise move, decides to send out Ayato, although Ayato doesn't seem to want to do that—does he realize Sayoko's in there, and that's why he's reluctant?

Now that he's actually been deployed, it seems he's more annoyed about the way Kunugi said it than having to actually do it. We can now see the full form of the ice dolem, and it is definitely a dolem, but Ayato can see, inside the ice, what is either Sayoko or the Mulian. She's repeating two words over and over again, but I can't tell what they are, and it's unsubtitled, so I'm not sure. It then starts charging a mouth laser, which Ayato quickly erects a shield against, but which still causes some damage to him. We then see Megumi calling Ayato a "baka" and wondering why he isn't fighting back, and I was right that he's not fighting back because Sayoko is in there. This is one of the tough ones. Obviously, the dolems are not good, considering what they did to Australia, but it's a lot easier for Ayato to fight dolems than it is for him to fight humans(of course, he doesn't seem to know that every Dolem he destroys has a pilot). Kunugi, of course, tells Ayato that priority one is eliminating the dolems, although his next line is very...cold: "Human life is not an issue", and Ayato is predictably pissed at that. And after Kunugi says that to save Sayoko, Ayato should work a miracle, the dolem launches another ice beam, and this one actually freezes RahXephon, causing it to shut down.

Mu!Sayoko starts speaking. "Ollin, one loved by none." I'm pretty sure that's a fucking lie, considering Haruka, Quon, probably Megumi, maybe Mishima, etc.  *

With the dolem in the background, Itsuki walks up to Watari and reassures him that Ayato will be okay because he is The Chosen One. Inside the RahXephon, we can see Ayato freezing, and suddenly Mishima Reika! She touches his hands, and suddenly her gloves are on them. I think this is her helping him reactivate the RahXephon. Next, we get Quon saying something about chords, and suddenly, a huge beam of light comes out from the RahXephon, and Ayato exclaims that he will cause the miracle. He creates an energy blade on the RahXephon and starts cutting the ice dolem. We then see two dark figures welcoming Sayoko, who seems to be crying blood. Notably, red blood when the rest of her body is tinted blue. I think this is a sign that the Mulian is gone. And suddenly, the crystal of ice Sayoko was inside breaks apart, and Sayoko comes out. Next, we see Quon in a bikini, talking about how miraculous Ollin's light is.

The clouds clear, and Futagami got a good shot of them. Both the destruction of the dolem and Sayoko's survival are confirmed. We see the RahXephon in the sun, with Sayoko in its gigantic hand, repeating the phrase "I'm sorry". Finally, we come to Itsuki's party, and Sayoko mentions that she doesn't remember anything about what happened, but that she's lost the pendant he gave her. I wonder why? Itsuki has this extremely happy expression that is obviously hiding something. While Haruka stares at Ayato, Itsuki mentions that he thinks he's jealous; of what or whom is never mentioned. We see Kim dining with Souichi, and just as she's about to ask a question about them, Megumi comes in, and Souichi tells her Merry Christmas in English. Ayato returns the gloves to Haruka, and Megumi seems to notice something about them, but the episode closes on Haruka wearing a huge Luminescent Blush.

Hey Arilou do you remember if the show ever explained why Itsuki gave Nanamori the Dolem crystal? Considering common sense and his and Nanamori's background he couldn't have done it on accident.

Yeah, it's trangely weird but it's never explained. It's POSSIBLE he just did it on a whim but it seems unlikely...

Perhaps he was trying to trigger the "miracle"? That's the most charitable interpretation I can think of.

There are a number of allusions here to backstory elements that we won't learn about until later in the series. You can probably figure out what the significance of the gloves was to Haruka if you recall wha Megumi said in the first half of the episode and her reaction at the end.

Ice-dolem is named Sforzando, a subtle variation on the name of the previous episode's dolem. Sayako is lucky that Ayato saw her in the Dolem, or things could have been messy. And Itsuki has really been cruel to Sayako - he's got to be aware of her (obvious) crush on him, and he seemed to expect something to happen from giving her the crstal, although perhaps not this particular result.

One thing of ntoe in this show is that people actually change outfits quiute a bit. There's a few they keep coming back to (their uniforms obviously, Haruka's red jacket thingie, Ayato's blue T-shirt) but they have a couple of different ones.

I've been marathoning through this series over the last few days, so it's interesting to read this liveblog of this series with some hindsight.

I have to say this : despite being about ten episodes ahead, I still have no clue WTF Nishima's deal is. Although some stuff IS coming together by now (I think they stopped being subtle about Haruka several episodes ago).

Subtlety is not Haruka's strong point. Being mysterious is Mishima's strong point.

Episode 9 Act 1

We start with Futagami walking up a hill in the blazing hot sun—a nice contrast from last episode, eh? Next, we see images that I think are supposed to represent a Shinto shrine; I see the zigzag paper tassels at least. Futagami then mentions the word "spirited forth", the opposite of "spirited away", and something about digging up gods.

"Ninth Movement : Small Shrine of Time / SANCTUARY" The English title is in all-caps, which wouldn't be significant if it weren't for the fact that the other English titles weren't: I wonder what it means?

We return to the area where Itsuki is watching the RahXephon in its test room. Apparently he wants Ayato to make the shield of light that he produced in the previous battle. We can hear Ayato making a humming noise, trying to "build up energy" for the shield of light or something. Next, we see Ayato in the room, with it obvious that he has failed, and white-haired jerk talking to Itsuki wondering why they even keep him there. Ayato rightfully wonders who the fuck this white-haired jerk is and why we should listen to him. Apparently, he's the Earth Federation and represents mankind. Personally, I don't want white-haired jerk representing me. After Ayato gets pissed and leaves the room, white-haired jerk decides to have Sayoko escort Ayato(who he calls "prince", mockingly) back, presumably to talk to Itsuki in private. Next, white-haired jerk asks Itsuki if he wants to give it a try, and Itsuki is as confused as I am, but white-haired jerk does not explain.

Next, we return to Rikudoh's house, where Megumi is entering Haruko's room. She opens the door, and sees a huge amount of stuff, because Haruko's spring cleaning. Ayato is walking up to the house when he sees Quon. Quon, of course, is there because she wants to be with Ollin(i.e. Ayato), and she puts her ear up to his heart. Quon starts talking about his heart or something, and Ayato starts blushing, but then he tries to push her away due to the fact that Megumi is coming. Megumi is pissed at Ayato for coming near her house, and thinks Ayato did something to Quon. She then starts talking about how they're going to the beach tomorrow, and decides to invite Quon, although she doesn't suspect Quon will want to go, but she does. Back at the base, some guy with dreadlocks is whining that he doesn't get to go to the beach. Souichi, wearing a bathrobe or kimono or something, says that the weird weather shouldn't last long.

At the beach, we see Cathy McMahon(at least I think it's her; she's the only blonde I can think of in the series) running towards the beach screaming "Yahoo!" and throwing a water bottle to Shapplin(?). Meanwhile, Quon is just standing at the small pier, and Ayato is drawing her. I think there's supposed to be some similarity between Quon's pose and Mishima's pose in the picture from the beginning. Kim notices the picture and starts complimenting it, and shortly thereafter Elvy and Cathy appear, and ask for Ayato to draw them; Cathy doing so while rubbing her boobs in Ayato's face. Elvy tries to get Ayato to draw her rather than Cathy by pulling rank, but Cathy refuses to acknowledge because they aren't in uniform, so they get into a fight. Then, while Ayato is distracted by the fight, Kim snatches Ayato's sketchbook and runs off with it. Kim then flips to a page with a drawing of Mishima, and shows it to Megumi, who doesn't know who it is; Kim's response is "Ayato's favorite!"; Elvy and Cathy are still fighting and Megumi wants them to shut up. Kim then asks about what would happen if it weren't for Tokyo Jupiter, and Ayato's response is about the time lag; if it weren't for that, he'd be the same age as Itsuki and Haruko. She then asks a question about if he remembers anything from before the Great Mu War, and Ayato's response is pretty important: Itsuki told him that those memories are fake.

On a computer screen, we see someone looking up information on white-haired jerk, but when this person enters a password to get more information, access is denied. Also, the interface looks like something from an old X-Windows WM or something. We can then see that it's Sayoko and she appears to just be trying different passwords trying to get some information on white-haired jerk. Back at the beach, Haruko and Ayato are now on a boat, and Haruko is listening to something, but Quon decides to remove her headphones and put them on herself. Quon really seems to like listening to things—I guess it's the musical theme of the series. And as she's listening to it, she says "love, dreams, confidence, baseless happiness..."; I guess she's reading the themes from the music or something. Do Mulians communicate entirely musically? She then puts the headphones on Ayato and Haruka asks what he thinks. He doesn't actually get a chance to answer before Haruka dives off the boat. Quon, on the other hand, is just standing at the edge of the boat, still. We then get to see a cliff, where Mishima is just standing again.

Back at the base, white-haired jerk has Itsuki put on a helmet. Meanwhile, Quon and Ayato are now on the island, trying to make their way up to Mishima, and not even Quon knows who Mishima is. While Quon and Ayato chat about Mishima, we see that Quon is taking Ayato to some sort of ruins. Sayoko walks in and wonders what they are doing. Also, she's discovered that white-haired jerk was only brought into the Earth Federation recently. Back at the ruins, Quon says that she knows the place, but doesn't actually know what it is. And then, suddenly, the wooden doors open. At the base, white-haired jerk is threatening Sayoko or something, and calls himself a kind man, which is a blatant lie. But before he can finish his conversation, there is an explosion. The "egg" of the RahXephon is glowing, and out of the water, we can see a watery figure of Mishima Reika(I think it's her, the water makes it hard to tell). Quon decides to enter the tunnel, and Ayato follows her in—after they do so, the doors are closed. As the watery figure appears on the screen, Sayoko is wondering what's happening, and white-haired jerk says something about the goddess being guarded, and the eyecatch.

So, the Mulians have some dort of memory-editing technology. Presumably, this makes it easier for them to cover up any cracks in the masquerade. If Ayato ever noticed his mother bleeding blue, for example, they could wipe his memory of the event, or make him remember the blood as red. There are more possibilities as well...

I wonder if the heatwave is a rebound effect from Sforzando's attack last episode? Probably not, but it would be interesting if it were.

Episode 9 Act 2

We return with Haruka wondering where Ayato and Quon are; they've been gone for four hours. We see Megumi and Kim screaming out for the two, but then Megumi starts to lose interest—apparently, going off with Quon is something she doesn't condone. Inside the shrine, we can see Ayato walking, and Haruko finally finds the shrine. She tries to open the doors, but they refuse to budge, and when they finally do, instead of the open tunnel they showed for Ayato and Quon, the doors open to rocks, which block off the passage. Suddenly, though, Futagami appears. He identifies the shrine as the place the "spiriting forth" took place—i.e. two girls appeared. I wonder if they're Mulian. Futagami then talks about spiriting away, that most of the people who return usually end up spriting away again and not returning, and mentions as a spiriting away the entire city of Tokyo. Then, they hear, and see, planes flying over the island, probably looking for the two of them.

Back at the base, Itsuki seems rather depressed. Sayoko comes to him telling to cheer up and reassuring him that Quon will eventually come back, but Itsuki doesn't want to be cheered up, and just sends Sayoko home. Both Megumi and Itsuki look out at the rain, sad that Ayato and Quon are missing. We then see the Shitows eating, lonely without Ayato, and Ayato's sketchbook, currently not being touched. Next, we get a phone conversation between Itsuki and Haruka, in which Haruka is pissed at Itsuki for calling off the search. Haruka, not giving up and blatantly in love with Ayato, drives off to the shrine in order to find him. She opens the doors to find the rocks blocking it seem to have filled the opening up even more, and causes her to fall down in despair. How does she know they disappeared here anyways?

We finally see Ayato in the tunnel again, and he's looking for Quon. Suddenly, though, he's no longer in the tunnel, and the ground beneath him looks like a ripple pool. The authors really like that symbolism, don't they? The ripple pool then becomes Tokyo Jupiter, and Ayato starts floating. Quon, on the other hand, seems to be in a white void with just a table and a chair. The table has a black egg on a stand on it, and Quon picks up the egg. "Ixtli, Ollin is looking for you" And suddenly, Mishima Reika! "That egg is the cogwheel that turns time." Thanks, Mishima, that wasn't cryptic at all. Quon puts the egg up to her ear, and starts hearing a heartbeat. More cryptic stuff that makes no sense, although listening to Mishima Reika talk for extended periods of time makes me think that Ryougi Shiki is going to appear or something because they have the same voice actress and her voice is quite distinctive. But then Mishima tells Quon that she is Ollin, which confuses me, and then the egg starts to hatch open, showing an image of two young girls, who I think are Quon and Mishima, crying at the front of the temple.

And then, we see Ayato falling out of the sky, about to land on Tokyo Jupiter. But then, miraculously, his fall is slowed. As his fall is slowed, he hears singing, which happens to be the same tune that Haruka is humming outside the shrine, however, she soon stops humming and breaks down into tears. But then, the opening to the shrine glows, and out comes Ayato. He falls, unconscious, but Haruka grabs him before he falls. As he wakes up, we notice that although it's been several days outside the shrine, it's only been five minutes for him. This is the same technology that has Tokyo Jupiter under the time dilation, I'm betting. And Haruka has the same idea, then Ayato mentions that he saw Tokyo Jupiter, but returned because he heard singing—he belongs here.

Now we have white-haired jerk in the room with RahXephon, hoping that it would have been more interesting. Haruka is driving Ayato and Quon back, and on the phone with Itsuki. Ayato starts humming the tune that Haruka was humming, and mentions that he's heard it before but doesn't know where. Sayoko and white-haired jerk are at a bar, having a drink over their new partnership; white-haired jerk wants Sayoko to trust him, something that I would never do.

Episode 10 Act 1

We start out looking at...a dolem? Alpha Squadron seem to be fighting against it, and dodging its lasers. The Rahxephon appears shortly after, deflecting its lasers with its energy shield. It then uses the sword-like part of its energy shield to slice the dolem open, and then Alpha Squadron's missiles hit it, breaking it apart. I'm guessing this wasn't a very important dolem, or, if it is, it isn't truly defeated. Haruka then compliments Ayato's fighting ability, saying that he seems to have gotten rid of his doubts. Kunugi then tells Haruka that nobody is without doubts. Later, we see Quon going into Kunugi's room at night(he's still there, despite the clock saying 23:40—does he sleep in there or something?), apparently to get a violin or something.

"Tenth Movement: Sonata of Rememberance / War in the rememberance" Hmm, I don't think the same word has been used in both titles before.

Souichi opens the door to see Kunugi the next morning. Apparently the past month has been relatively peaceful, so I'm guessing we've had a minor timeskip before this episode, since the last few episodes have been anything but. Apparently he's here to deliver mail. Souichi asks if the peaceful days could last, but Kunugi says he's being too optimistic. Suddenly, Kunugi seems shocked by a piece of mail he gets from "Mariko". I wonder who Mariko is. Also, Kunugi's going to be gone for a day, so Souichi will take up the base. Then Souichi asks if Kunugi is going to look for a husband. This question isn't actually answered. In the next scene, as he's entering a train, he sees Watari, and all I can think now is that he doesn't need a husband, he has Watari. Watari, though, is going to some memorial service about the Great Mu War. Some more chatter between Watari and Kunugi, which doesn't really seem significant.

Ayato and Megumi are walking somewhere, and Megumi is sleepy, when they see Quon walking down a perpendicular hallway. Quon says hello to Ayato, but she calls him Ollin, which confuses Megumi. Also, she's going to Jin's. I think this is the first time I've heard Kunugi actually called by his first name. We also see dreadlocks dude asking about what girls want, but the guy he's asking doesn't know. Kim, on the side, is just sort of watching. Dreadlocks guy then comes up to Ayato and Megumi and asks the same question. Megumi, of course says that she would love chocolate and flowers, but dreadlocks guy says that Megumi has Ayato. Then, predictable tsundereness and the two are now fighting over food. And then in comes white-haired jerk, talking about how they don't have a sense of tension. He makes a disparaging comment about it being the frontline of the anti-Mu effort, and then Souichi comes in, announcing that the commander is off. After white-haired jerk leaves, Ayato starts relating the story about Quon looking for something she left with Jin. Note that nobody else knows that Kunugi's name is Jin either, except Kim, who has been silently in the background reading a magazine this entire time. The fact that Quon's at the commander's surprises everyone.

During the ensuing "WHAAAAAAAT?" from everyone, Ayato gets a phone call from Itsuki. Of course, we don't actually get to see the conversation between Itsuki and Ayato because the time is instead taken up by Souichi telling them that Quon often goes to see Kunugi at night, and that it's a totally normal thing: of course dreadlocks guy sees sexual intent out of it, despite the fact that Quon seems innocent enough to the viewer that those sorts of creepy vibes aren't noticed. After that, we then get to learn what's going on: Itsuki has something interesting that he wants to show Ayato. Souichi has Megumi show Ayato the way, which is probably going to be the source of more tsundereing from Megumi. Quon is back in Kunugi's room, looking at the bird it seems. Kim is curious as to why Quon is here at all, and asks Souichi so. Souichi then explains that Quon is in a similar situation as Ayato, which is that he has a special ability despite being a civilian, so he's allowed. The difference between Quon and Ayato, though, is that the things Ayato say make sense.

Next, we're in a big building labeled "Kunugi". Kunugi is inside it, listening to some message from his daughter about playing her favorite violin. I'm guessing that he lets Quon in because she reminds him of his daughter(that was way too coherent to be Quon). Inside Ayato's house, the interesting thing Itsuki wanted Ayato to see was...flowers? Actually, wait, no, I think it's the recording that Ayato is listening to, which is of Quon playing the violin. Actually, yes, it is the flowers, which Itsuki had listen to Quon's music. They bloomed much better than the flowers that didn't. Ayato then starts talking about how listening to it makes you sadder and sadder, because of a sense of dissonance which it has. We then get to hear Quon playing the music itself, overlaid over Kunugi's day off, which he spends rather depressively—where everyone else has bright colors and all that, he's wearing all black and sunglasses. And the eyecatch.

The bit with Itsuki seeing Reika's image in the water is fairly interesting. He'd recognize her of course, and given his history and what he knows, of course he'd be sad...

They won't actually say what's up with Reika until very late. (it's possible you won't get it completely until last episode's post-credits scene)

whoever said that there was only one "Ollin"?

Which incidentally explains Sayako's "Ollin, loved by none" comment...

Episode 10 Act 2

Kunugi is buying a watch, and the jeweler gives it to him to inspect it. Then, suddenly, Futagami sees Kunugi and remarks on how nice the watch is. Kunugi decides to buy the watch, and Futagami asks if he can inspect it as well: he sees that the price is quite high. Back in Itsuki's house, Itsuki walks into Quon's room to see her collapsed on the floor, depressed. Quon says something about it not being enough, and then some Mu-babble that I again don't understand. Itsuki says that Ollin said the same thing when he heard it, and that Kunugi(it's weird hearing him called Jin) will probably choose to listen to her if those are her words. Is that piece of music something his daughter wrote?

Meanwhile, Kunugi is talking to Futagami. Apparently Kunugi helped Futagami get something for his niece. However, as Kunugi is about to leave, Futagami reminds him that the boat doesn't leave for a while. They then start to converse about the conference that Watari is attending. Futagami then starts to make comments about how it was humans stationed in Japan who made the first shots against the Mu. He then continues talking about how it's assumed that America acted independently, but, in fact, someone from the National Defense(part of the Japanese military?) was actually pulling the strings, but blamed everything on a subordinate, who then ended up using a tactical fusion bomb, without even knowing it was one. Futagami asks for Kunugi's response, but Kunugi has been sucked into a flashback sequence. Kunugi is talking to a superior officer, hesitating to launch an attack because there are still civilians there, but because the superior officer's orders are absolute, he is required to do it. I suspect this is the attack that Kunugi is talking about. It's probably also why he says that human life is not the issue. After the flashback, Futagami asks why Kunugi decided to work in TERRA instead, and if it was because of the pay. He then makes a comment about his own pay, and Kunugi says he could set up Futagami with a job in the Earth Federation, which Futagami takes as a joke. After this, Kunugi finally leaves, and I'm left amazed at Futagami's skills.

Itsuki, while sipping tea, sees Quon, who I believe has decided to go see Kunugi. Ayato, meanwhile, is complaining about Megumi going out of her way to buy something. They then hear Haruka's voice, commenting on them going out on a date, which of course gets them to do the ISO Standard "This is not a date!" Action. Megumi then explains that she's buying a vase for the flowers she got from Itsuki, and then Megumi decides to sniff Haruka and Elvy and notices that they're going out for steak together, which she then makes a joke about it and Elvy's drinking, which makes Ayato and Haruka chuckle and Elvy to be quite pissed. Elvy then decides to go up to Ayato and have him "keep her company". Which just makes me flash back to when she was drunkenly making a pass on him. The Shitows, now together with each other, are in a bar, discussing Kunugi's given name, which Haruka already knew. This fact causes Megumi to end up even deeper into her sister complex. Haruka also knew that it was a special day for him—I'm guessing related to his daughter. Next, we see Ayato keeping Elvy company...by shooting at her from a fighter plane. Maybe when she asked him to "lock on, lock on" and "dog fight, dog fight" she meant it literally. She dodges his shots, and he makes a comment about having done this in Tokyo, which confuses me until she fires at him, he gets shot down, and the words "game over" start repeating themselves. Afterwards, Ayato and Megumi are walking home, and Megumi forgot to buy the vase.

Ayato and Megumi are watching a cruise ship for dates, which Megumi starts to fangirl over, and Futagami sees them and also thinks it's a date. Then, he shows them that Kunugi is going on that ship, although his date is with his daughter, as it's her birthday. We then see Kunugi and his ex-wife, and I can easily tell that they do not have a good relationship. She then starts talking about the video he watched, and how he destroyed that child(metaphorically) because he used his work as an excuse to never be there for her. She mentions that the reason she came to see him was that she's leaving Japan and getting her name changed, which means that either she really wants a clean break from Kunugi, she's getting married, or both. She then hands him an envelope with the last page of their daughter's piece of music. Then, he recieves some flowers, as well as the squirrel that Futagami had(so I'm guessing the niece is Futagami's way of trying to figure out more about Kunugi). After that, Kunugi's wife, who is apparently the Mariko from earlier, leaves, and Kunugi gives one last message: "Thank you".

Ayato and Megumi, watching from outside, wonder whether Kunugi's date with his daughter went well, or rather, Megumi does, but Ayato feels it's wrong to butt in like that. At the base, Souichi authorizes the launch of Elvy's plane, and Haruka notices that he has grown very confident, even without Kunugi there. Kunugi is no longer on the boat, walking away from it. (How did he get off?) He then approaches Quon, and gives her the last page of music. Quon then plays the last page of music, and then we get to see the daughter's grave, "Michiru kunugi", who died in 2013. The music continues to play as the camera shows Kunugi's empty office, and the bird has a ring labeled "Michiru" on its foot, and as the music ends, an airplane engine roars.

2013 is, as Futagami mentioned, the year that the Mu invaded and when the fusion bomb was dropped with heavy civilian casualties.

Next episode - things get trippy.

Pretty mellow episode focused on the side-character. Apart from the obvious I don't think there's much revealed. (although both Elvy and Quon gets some spotlight)

EDIT: I love the trippy episode. Seriously.

Let me guess, the trippiness is related to Mishima or Quon.
