This thread is for quick questions. A "quick question" is a question which has a relatively quick, generally factual answer; a question which is not likely to inspire an extended discussion.

e.g.

Quick Question: How tall is an average ten-year-old boy?
Not a Quick Question: Why are Americans obsessed with guns?

Quick Question: Why is ALS sometimes called Lou Gehrig's Disease? Who was Lou Gehrig?
Not a Quick Question: In Alan Dean Foster's Thranx Commonwealth series, is Pip a Mary Sue?

Well, there are sites like Cha Cha that will pay you to answer people's questions. It pays something like a few cents per question when they charge the users a couple dollars, but it's money. There are even sites that pay you for long-form articles about stuff you know that aren't selling them as school reports, but I know even less about that.

If you can find a survey site that still pays, you can get a few dollars a survey. I spent a few years with Survey Spot and got a decent amount of spending money at first. At least one was ten dollars. Then the paid surveys dried up and they were just cluttering my inbox with unpaid surveys. Once in a blue moon at the end, they'd offer a paid survey, but screen me by demographics and then tell me "sorry, we already filled our quota for people like you."

And then of course if you're a good enough writer, you can get a paid gig as a blog contributor, or you can build up a webcomic, but that takes time and investment as well as talent.

There are a number of paid survey sites out there (Survey Spot is still one of them), but they're a really bad return on time, unless you literally have nothing else more productive to do. In my experience, they pay about $0.50 per survey, and each survey takes about 15-30 minutes to fill out, so you'd only be making about $1-$2 per hour. And you have to accumulate a certain amount of money in your account ($5-$30, depending on the site) before they'll send you the money.

There are also sites (I don't remember names off the top of my head) for which you can write articles for, and they'll give you a cut of the ad earnings. However, that obviously depends on you being able to write stuff people will want to read, and if you want to earn more than a pittance, you have to be able to write about topics which get higher-paying ads and be willing to look into optimizing your articles for search engines and the like.

Eventually I was just sticking around waiting on a paid survey that actually let me in so I could make my minimum payout and flee.

If I've got a package from UPS being delivered by the postal system, and it's been "processed by local post office", can I just go pick it up? It missed the mail delivery today by a hair, and I'm supposed to be hanging out with a friend this weekend (which for me, starts today) before he moves to Canada, so I really don't want to wait until tomorrow to receive it.

I don't know if I'd say they 'burrow' exactly. They sort of embed their head in the skin.

Does the PSP/PS Vita use the memory stick as the only means for storage?

According to our own pages on the systems, yes. With the Vita, you apparently have to purchase the memory sticks separately.

Depends on what you want to do with it. Android-phones can be made to do a lot of things that iPhones can't, due to the latter's apps being restricted to what's in the official app store. On the other hand, the iPhone's apps and systems are much more streamlined as a result.

But that's just Android phones vs iPhones in general. I dunno the strengths and weaknesses of those models in particular.

Android-phones can be made to do a lot of things that iPhones can't, due to the latter's apps being restricted to what's in the official app store.

It's more than that. Apple apps are rigorously screened to fit Apple's standards, and might be rejected on grounds as flimsy as "we just don't think this is something our product should do", or the slightly less flimsy "our carriers don't want their premium services duplicated for free". Android apps are added directly to the Play Store by the developers, and only pulled if somebody flags them as abusive. Maybe they're subjected to automatic malware screening before they go live, but humans don't see them until there's a problem.

Apple apps also have the slight advantage that there's less they have to worry about for hardware and firmware compatibility, though Google cracked down on the worst hardware disparities two firmware versions ago.

Personally, I would say you should get an S3. But that's what's right for me, not what's right for you.

How involved do you want to get in how your phone works? Android is much more customizable and hackable, but the iPhone, in limiting your options, gives you more assurances that you can't break it with bad decisions. When it comes to computers, would you rather walk a fenced garden path, or hike a rough trail to a mountaintop vista? If you're okay with being given a list of things your phone is not allowed to do for your own safety, get an iPhone. If you like to take risks and solve problems in order to make it the phone you want to use, get an S3.

And then even if you're not interested in optimizing your phone, there's also factory-standard features to consider. The S3 has a bigger screen and near-field communications for sending stuff between phones with a tap. Google Now is often faster than Siri, but not as personal.

@Glenn: Because of the high standard Apple sets for its products and the screening process T Para explained, every app in its app store is pretty much guaranteed of being the best there is at what it does. No looking at five different apps wondering which one does the job best and no question about whether it will work on your phone or not. (Never actually had an iPhone, but this is what I hear from those who do.)

[up] Not actually true. I have an iPhone, and there are lots and lots of redundant apps to sort through. That's why you look at customer reviews, especially before buying.

But, yes, it pretty much comes down to customizability. iOS and iPhones in general are great for the average Joe or other casual mobile user, while Android is great for those who really want to and have the capabilities and knowledge to do more with their phone.

Also, Siri's fun to screw with sometimes.

My understanding is that Apple puts loads and loads of money in advertising, and because it has stuch a strong brand by now, Apple products tend to cost loads more than competing products with comparable hardware and software. So if you see two touch-screen phones that cost the same, the one that isn't Apple will usually be better/newer.

At least a third of the price of an Apple product pays for being able to say "I own Apple products".

And another third pays for a machine to bring Steve Jobs back to life.

At least, that's the only way I can make sense of Apple's prices.

Sorry for the interruption, but if anyone knows, how would one write/say "Please go ahead" and "Thank you for asking me" or some equivalent in Japanese?

Basically, someone is asking me for permission to post a work of mine on their site, and I'm allowing them to.

Online translators are kind of iffy; if there's another place where I should be asking, just point the way and I'll delete my question.

Feel free to look around.
