I've had a bunch of ideas locked up for a while and I'd like to let at least one or two of them out. The Eternal Engine thing is just one of them, trust me.  *

How about this? Each island has two dungeons— one regular dungeon each which are visited in a somewhat-linear order, and then a different bonus dungeon each, which can, for the most part, be visited in any order. That way, we could include some more variety to each island.

That could make room for your Eternal Engine, depending on where it goes and what its rationale is. I think the idea is pretty cool, though, now that I think about it, our host will probably want to focus on the storyline dungeons first and worry about this bonus stuff later.

Also, it occurs to me that the storyline for each island helps explain the disparity. For instance, the enemies in the Freezair's Air dungeon only have to be as strong as you'd expect of the mafia, rather than being metaphysical representations of the Air God or whatever.

What kind of ideas do you need? If you mean story ideas, I may be able to help. Gameplay ideas may be a little more difficult.

Not sure I'd be much help, but editing and contributing ideas, I can do.

I can do soundtrack work.

In fact, I can upload something if you'd like to hear a sample.

Does Freezair know we rezzed this topic?

I can come up with ideas for the boss characters. Just tell me what the stage will be like (sea, cloud, volcano, etc.) and I'll think of a boss and a strategy to beat it.

@Deathonabun: It does not appear so.

Okay, here's some boss ideas that I came up with. Let me know if you enjoy it and would be willing to using these bosses in your game. If you have any other ideas to improve on these concepts, please let me know.

  • earth-The forest could actually be a jungle where prehistoric creatures that secretly thrived for centuries. The boss could be a caveman riding a giant dinosaur while smaller dinosaurs distract the player.
  • fire-The hot spring poisoning could be caused by the boss. The boss in this case would be a three eyed jellyfish creature that produces poisonous steam and can spit acid from its "mouth".
  • water-The water world could be plagued by a creature that's eating the town's chief export of fish and seafood. The boss in this case would be a planerian-whale that would periodically spawn additional( albeit smaller) copies of itself whenever the player cuts the creature.
  • air-The town could be controlled by a mob syndicate that prevents the hero(es) from leaving the city. In the end, the player would have to face several members of the mob. When they eventually defeat all the members, they'll release a Quasimodo/Frankenstein's monster esque creature that would have high amounts of strength but would be incredibly slow.

What does the mob have to do with Air? That is a creative and unusual interpretation of the element, but it still seems too bizarre.

@ Xeuorux

Earlier in the discussion, the creator mentioned that he wanted the "air" area to be set in a city in the mountains. Apparently the city is controlled by a mob syndicate and they have the aforementioned boss captive and use it to attack anyone who stands in their way.

Hopes this clarifies things.

I've always wanted to make music for an indie game. But it's debatable as to whether I'll develop skills fast enough to have anything usable.

I make clumsy attempts at it and have a bunch of music software, which I don't use very well. I don't release any of it because it sucks.

Hence why I've put a shout out in OTC if some of the Troper music nerds can reccommend me some good books for learning introductory music theory.

Alright, this sounds awesome. I love this type of project. I'm more than willing to help out on ideas, editing, level design and play testing (who on this thread hasn't offered to do those things?), but before I start coming up with ideas I need to know this battle system you're so proud of. What kind of stats are you using? Are there random battles, or can you avoid them like in Chrono Trigger? I'll need some more details, but once I get them, it'll be epic, I promise.
