GameInformer article on the reveal. Sounds awesome. Hopefully I'll have something that can run it well by the time it's out.
Somehow you know that the time is right.Yeah, I'll probably need to upgrade my rig soon, though probably not by much. Right now, I've got a Phenom II and a 660 squeezed into an old 5:4 monitor, and I had some framerate issues with The New Order.

Direct all enquiries to Jamie B GoodNow that it sound like it's close in spirit to the original games (and possibly even Brutal Doom) my biggest wish for this game is to have a kickass, rockin' soundtrack.
My current laptop will run The New Order on high settings with no slowdown when it's plugged in, but it would be nice to have something a bit more beefy for when this game comes out. But I do have beta access, so I'll at least get a trial run to see how it performs on my laptop.

It's a bit dated now, as history has kept happening, but it's a fascinating insight into what went into Doom being so amazing and why it all self-destructed.
Kick this thread back to life boys!
Or not, we can wait for E3 I guess.
Get in line sons of bitches!

See, you know what I'm kinda worried about with the new Doom? That the current id doesn't really get why Doom was even good in the first place.
Sure, Doom initially got popular because of Moral Guardians freaking out about violence, but the reason it stays popular to this day is because of its actual game design.
When it comes down to it, Doom is really an amped up version of a dungeon crawler. Like, take something like Etrian Odyssey, replace the anime aesthetic and fantasy setting with demons, shotguns, Slayer, and put it in real time and simplfy everything down to "place key in door and shoot the fuck out of everything else on the way" and that's pretty much Doom. See, the part people miss out on about Doom is the puzzle-esque design of its levels and combat. Doom wasn't just about running in headfirst and shooting shit, it was about exploiting the level design to get shit done. Going back to the puzzle comparison, Doom's whole combat balance was like a puzzle. Every weapon has it's pros and cons, and even later in the game some of the starting guns (esp. the shotgun) still have their usefulness. It was very situational with its weapons, a common element across id games (I'd argue that Quake 3 was probably the best implementation of this idea but that's another talk for another day.)
My problem with Brutal Doom is that, for lack of a better way, it simplifies and Flanderizes the hell out of Doom's weapon balance. None of that subtle situational weapon balancing or puzzle-esque combat matters when everything kills everything in 1 sec, turning Doom into a "just blast though and kill as much as you can" game. That's my main concern with the new Doom, it's hewing less towards what Doom actually was and more towards the Flanderized version of what everything thinks Doom is (so stuff like Brutal Doom, Shadow Warrior, Serious Sam, Painkiller, etc.)
The original Doom was more than just a orgy of violence, but I'm afraid that the new Doom is just gonna fall into the same trap nearly every "Doom-like" game has fallen into, focusing only on the surface elements and ignoring why still give a shit about Doom after the shock value wore off.
The flipside of that is, all those "Doom-like" games you mentioned do have their own sense of weapon balance - yes, including Brutal Doom. It's obviously not the same as the original Doom's balance, but neither is it supposed to be.
Somehow you know that the time is right.I feel like we could really use a first-person shooter with the tactical... "depth?" of Doom and Doom 2 again, though. There's been too much "dive behind cover", "regenerate health", "escort quest" kinda nonsense, and it'd be nice to see a return to form with one heavily-armed superman dodging rockets and returning fire, and figuring out the best way to do it in real time.
月を見るたび思い出せSo is the new Doom coming out on dat PS Triple or no?
I'd be somewhat disappointed if it was. I really think it's time to leave last-gen behind and focus strictly on the modern systems. I don't expect Doom to be a graphical masterpiece (Wolfenstein The New Order ran on the same engine and wasn't that great either), but I don't want the overall visual quality to suffer because of trying to make it run on outdated technology.
I hope they don't try to release it on last and current gen at the same time. At least release it on current gen first and then on last gen later, the same way Mortal Kombat X is doing.
To be totally honest, I kinda agree with you I guess. Yeah I'm kinda not in the spot atm to get a new, non-potato computer (I'm kinda done with consoles to be totally honest) but I can get why a last-gen port would be somewhat detrimental to the current gen experience.
Bring on the discussions space marines! Some of those finishing moves are badass.
I know some people will call this game a Brutal Doom wannabe, which would be pointless since Brutal Doom was nothing but a mod that added gore, thus giving way too much credit for it.
Gonna miss the heavy metal though

I just played Brutal Doom for the first time last week. It did quite a lot more than just add gore. It's not all good, but I think it's a much better modern Doom than what I saw in that gameplay demo.
I think the thing that bothers me the most is how bad the hit reactions from enemies are. They don't seem to respond at all to getting shot until the bullet that kills them. That's poor feedback.
this place needs me hereI suppose, but Brutal Doom is sometimes given way too much credit as if it was built from scratch, and I mildly guessed the coming comparisons.
For the demo, it looks good, but they could have used going a bit more... wild. I hope this demo just uses the first level where things get more interesting but being ridiculous and brutal helps, enemy feedback helps the brutality, so you have a point. I like the way weapons are going, they're big and nasty, could use being more loud.
It seems like they combined Doom 3 with the previous ones or something. This reminds me of The New Order, where everyone expected it to suck thanks to the demo, might be getting a similar case here... The enemy actually seem to respond, but for some reason it appears only the shotgun gives a clear one when shot at close range.
I'll be cautious but optimistic, after all the original leaders are gone.

Second demo. This gives I think a better impression as to the speed of the game. I hope the "slow down time during weapon select" feature turns off for the higher difficulty settings.
You see this with most FPS games at E3. The player walks slowly and looks around in this awkward, smooth manner to show off stuff. Also, whoever was playing really sucked because his aim wasn't that good and he kept on hurting himself with the rocket launcher.
Judging by the player movements, it looks like it's the console version as it was played with a controller.

Level Editor
You reckon there'll be a special edition bundle with the old Doom games on it included?
I guess so, if they bothered enough to have a level editor why not the classics included in a bundle?

As long as traditional mapping and modding is still possible, I like the concept. Worked well enough in the Timesplitters series.
Fear the cinnamon sugar swirl. By the Gods, fear it, Laurence.
Ah alright. I've seen instore copies in the UK offering it on the box though. Maybe its a first print thing?
