Doom 3 was trying to be scary. I remember advertisements (back when Banner ads didn't just advertise free-to-play MMO games XD) that said it was the scariest game ever (Hyperbole!) and the whole point behind the flashlight was to invoke Nothing Is Scarier and such.
Doom 1 and Doom 2 on the other hand never tried. They where just straight-up action shooters. Some people did try and make them scarier (The PS 1 port replaced all the music with screechy wails) but I consider that a form of Misaimed Fandom myself.
In my humble opinion it was all a massive waste of time though. Doom isn't scary. You're a walking death machine made of armor and rocket launchers.
Bleye knows Sabers.Scary or not, I still loved it when I played it 7-8 years ago. Nowadays though I will agree that it was a step down from Doom 2. A game where you're carrying an army's worth of munitions doesn't translate well into a horror game.
A bit late to the Doom 4 discussion, but I do hope it returns to its action-y roots when it comes out. Thankfully it looks like we're still keeping the Hyperspace Arsenal since Rage had it, but I will not be very happy if they bring back the Regenerating Health.
Though actually, it's not Regenerating Health I mind so much as it's the gopher-like Pop-and-Cover guys with guns. If they do the same thing that Duke Nukem Forever did and replace most of the enemies with these kinds of guys, that'll be even worse than being forced to take cover if you get hit too much.

See page 17 for my opinions on "Modernizing" doom. XD
I'm sure this has already been posted, possibly by me, but it bears repeating just to hammer home that THIS IS MY GREATEST WAKING FEAR
Yup, I watched that video (and Part 2 as well!). I would've done a few things different to hammer the point home, but they're still very well done =P
Doom 3 had degenerating health, what makes one think that it will have regenerating health
http://steamcommunity.com/id/Xan-Xan/I finished Doom 3. That plot stopped making sense 2/3 of the way through.
Never trust anyone who uses "degenerate" as an insult. Its doom, who needs a plot for it?
http://steamcommunity.com/id/Xan-Xan/It might have made the ending more satisfying.
Never trust anyone who uses "degenerate" as an insult.Today is Doom's 19th birthday, by the way.
"Hipsters: the most dangerous gang in the US." - Pacific MackerelReally? I'll celebrate by playing shitton of Doom.
Does this mean exactly one year from now we'll be getting Doom 4 on Doom's twentieth?
Bleye knows Sabers.Psychophobia. DAT. CYBERDEMON. FIGHT.
Also, I don't get the point of the Necronomicon. Resurrects enemies only to have them attack you again? Cause I ain't even fired a shot when the Revenant punched me... after punching a zombie to death.
They didn't attack me when I summoned them. Might be a difference in versions... Psychophobia has a lot of updates and such.
And did I not say that fight was awesome? That fight is awesome. And oh gawd. The music.
I've been playing through the original Doom lately. I believe I have the Depths of Doom Trilogy, though it's an odd name since this was well before Doom 3, and it doesn't have Evilution or the Plutonia Experiment. It does have Thy Flesh Consumed, but the main feature is a bunch of fan-made levels put on a CD and sold with the package.
Good lord, there seriously should have been some quality control when they were picking some of these fan levels. It seems like they just randomly picked a bunch of fan-made levels and stuck them on the CD. Oh, there's a couple of cool ones, but it annoys me when one awesome level is Part 2 of however many, but I don't have Part 1, or any others.
Don't take life too seriously. It's only a temporary situation. They probably just chose the ones they liked the best that were actually playable.
I can't believe they give you a gravity gun in Resurrection of Evil. That is so lame.
Never trust anyone who uses "degenerate" as an insult.Yeah, Half Life 2 came out only a year before that game. You can really tell they took some inspiration from that series.

I was searching for that article too
http://steamcommunity.com/id/Xan-Xan/Aight, so that's the truth.
I just got this weird idea, though. Both the plots of Doom 3 and the first Half Life are very similar. Starting out in a research lab where everything's normal (or so it seems), an experiment goes wrong and monsters/aliens come in, you find scientists along the way who help you out, the facility starts falling apart, teleportation experiments, and near the end you gotta go to the source of the invasion to put an end to it.
But Doom 3's plot is just a retelling of the original Doom. So what if Half Life is actually ripping off Doom all along? But at the same time, Doom 3 added stuff that weren't in the original that makes it seem more like Half Life. And Doom 3 and Half Life 2 were in development around the same time. Dueling Games at its finest, eh?
The Resurrection of Evil marine had the dumbest face. It was like "duuuuuuuuurrrrrrr" in every cutscene you could see it in.
Never trust anyone who uses "degenerate" as an insult.Well, the beta Half Life used the Quake 2 engine, so....
http://steamcommunity.com/id/Xan-Xan/Hey, guess what?
I just found the infamous Doom: Rampage Edition. And I'm gonna do the unthinkable. I'm gonna find the exact reason why this is the most reviled wad of all time.
As soon as the son of a bitch finishes downloading. Freakin' illegal mp3s.
I don't envy you. I think you'd enjoy yourself more playing those levels the Columbine shooters made, if you're looking for infamy in Doom WA Ds.
Of course, don't you know anything about ALCHEMY?!- Twin clones of Ivan the Great
I don't think Doom 3 was trying to be scary.
x3 And you're not answering the question.
