Was it just the alt right? The story has changed a lot from being about joking about the military to joking about an individual.
From what I understand this Yokoi fellow is considered a hero to Japanese ultranationalists because he fought World War II until 1972, being the very last Japanese soldier to surrender.

Ultranationalists are faaaaaaaaaar more powerful in Japan than in most democratic countries, and they hold many high government positions, including the current PM who is at least as bad as Trump from what I understand. The magazine was likely afraid of blowback from someone seriously high up, is what I'd guess.

Someone mentioned earlier an answer in the latest SBS got Japan's alt-righty pissy because it poked fun at the military. But I don't know what the actual, specific comment was.
