A reboot ?
And I see the rumors about Ninja Theory being the developer have been confirmed.
I guess I'll wait and see, but I don't really see any need to reboot the series. It's not like there was so much canon that it was getting convoluted, and Devil May Cry 4 left quite a lot of questions unanswered...
Plus the guy in the screenshots.. his chara is just 'meh'. Seriously. Don't tell me he's supposed to be Dante. Don't tell me that, please.
What the hell was that?
Oh, new developer. I feel sorry for them, for the hate they are about to recieve
If that's Dante then I'm Solid Snake.

"Ugly" sums it up so far. That guy looks like a friggin' child molester.
Fuck. It looks like they surgically extracted everything likable from Dante's character and replaced him with Captain Scowlyface.
From now on, call me Solid Snake.
Capcom. Why the fuck did you let Ninja Theory work on a Devil May Cry game. Seriously. And a reboot, too? A shitty-looking, pointless reboot? First Castlevania, now this? Good grief.
Five bucks says this ends up being the next DMC 2.

^^^You say that and there isn't a proper trailer out yet? The Kotaku link was a dead end, btw. Not trying to defend the new Dante look. Just saying: Wait and see. It might not suck.

(V)(;,,;)(V)Dead end? It's working for me.
The trailer sucks too, btw. Gives me Prototype vibes, and that's not really what I'm looking for from DMC...

^^Says "Video not available"
And what has Ninja Theory done? Name doesn't ring a bell.

(V)(;,,;)(V)The trailer is out Geth Knight. Sucks that you can't see it but the link Shale posted worked for me too.
And the art direction and Dante's fighting style in the trailer are completely different from what I am used with the series, and yeah, the scyte-shapeshifting-thing Dante used definitely gave me Prototype vibes.
Ok. found the trailer on joystiq. Looks cool and we are seeing a Dante in a certain context. Who's to say he wouldn't be somewhat like he was in the original? Don't understand the Fan Dumb going on.
Will say this. Would look better if he didn't have black hair. Maybe a skunk stripe

(V)(;,,;)(V)I can't see any pics atm cause I'm capped but is there any reasoning for the reboot? It's not like DMC is doing badly in the west is it? Do they really not want to write a sequel to DMC 2 and can't avoid it anymore (the solution here would just be to ignore it or claim AU or something) a reboot doesn't seem that necessary in a game like this.
It's like asking to reboot Half life or any other series that's going strong and still not finished answering all the questions in its continuity.
I can't recall a single moment in the trailer in which he wasn't scowling. Just saying.
Me no likey.
I mean, I don't think anyone here can say they'll miss the plot as it was with a straight face, but this is just not the right style.

Plus it's just cliched. The anti-hero with superpowers is captured and studied by a disembodied presumably-evil voice, and then he escapes and goes out for revenge while being all scowly. If you're going to use the cliches at least make them fun cliches, viz. the other DMCs.
Even people who don't like the series that much are going WTF at this. Really.
I wouldn't mind it being a prequel/reboot if it actually looked more like its predecessors, especially Dante, who doesn't even have Rebellion, which is basically his signature sword by now, and, as mentioned, doesn't even smile, while the Dante we all know is a wise-cracking, Crazy Awesome semi-Blood Knight who specialises in pulling off some of the most ridiculous shit ever. Dante's fighting in this trailer is practically mundane by comparison.
Oh, yeah, and evidentially? It seems to take things too seriously. Wasn't the lack of camp one of the major bad points of DMC 2?

In the trailer he was either tied up, possibly beaten before hand, or in the middle of a fight. Scowling is to be expected.
(V)(;,,;)(V)Seems like it's lost the campness that made 3 and 4 so good. I'll never understand why companies keep making the mistake of thinking they have to be "edgy" to suceed. It'd be completely unremarkable if it wasn't for the fact it's going to be remembered as the black sheep of a franchise.
No, scowling is not to be expected with Dante, unless he's fighting one of the bigger baddies, and sometimes not even then, he's having fun, cracking jokes and not breaking a sweat while he kicks ass with style.
^^ You know, I can't shake the feeling that they made the mistake of thinking "Darker and Edgier = more better" before, too... it's the oddest thing.

Geth: That's the thing, Dante is the kind of guy who, in the first ten minutes of his first game, cracked a smile after being impaled on a sword make of sentient lightning and then shoving the entire thing through his chest, including the hilt and handguard. Even assuming Young Dante, this is pretty damn out of character.
Well.
The reaction to this should be nice and ugly.
