I felt like of all of the anti-SOS Brigade, Anti-Haruhi (Sasaki) was at least well written and characterized. Unfortunately, she was basically introduced to just give the story that extra, "oh my" as she is revealed not only to be Kyon's Childhood Friend (could be a romantic rival guys!) but also as a Reality Warper like Haruhi, except she doesn't do anything other than make Kyon feel awkward. Well written, a good character does not make.

I agree, the other three were barely two dimensional, and I am usually really lenient on what is and isn't good character development. They were there to further the plot, and barely anything else.

I will say that I did love the scene where their alien (Koyou Suou) seems to be getting increasingly alarmed and worried about Kyon's own safety at the hands of Ryoko, but that was such a tiny part.

Sasaki is actually introduced rather late into the Yuki-chan manga, and she fulfills much the same purpose there as in the main story, but it felt like it worked better for me - mostly because in a setting without reality warping powers and stuff like that, the shock-value part of her characterization is removed and her really kind of strange way of thinking is highlighted.

It's been fun.

Looking back at the entire thing, I tend to lean towards the way the series was handled as to why it's looked at with such disdain now by a lot of people. It's true that Endless Eight caused a lot of ill-will, but as previously mentioned the movie pretty much wiped that slate clean and got a lot of people in love with the series again.

Then, well, nothing happened. Literally nothing. The show was pretty much left to rot on the vine even though they could have easily made a third season. The novels stalled, hard, with so much more time between them than originally anticipated.

At this point the author has seemingly pretty much all but declared that he's walked away from it. There hasn't been anything new for ages, aside from the spin-off mangas.

It's a shame really. The end of volume 10 is a pseudo-resolution I suppose, but it still leaves one wanting more. It just sort of leaves it at And the Adventure Continues.

Then again, a part of me can't help but feel that Tanigawa might have been trapped by the sudden meteoric success of the series. I'm not sure how much he might have intended to write, but it seemed like he didn't want to do as much as he even did.

The Haruhi-chan shorts already filled that slot.

Not really, they were produced at peak popularity. For it to fit they had to be made years after the show had concluded.

[up]Yeah, but stylistically it's kinda the same deal (as in it's a dumber/stupider version of the original)

Alright so when's Nagato starting, cause my ass is getting hyped up even though I know it's kinda bad idea tbh.

Kind of a combination of factors in this case — the author's creative input suddenly tanking, Kadokawa's bad habit of rarely bankrolling continuations for adaptations (see the trend of their recent committee-backed series getting TEN episodes only), and Kyo Ani branching out as a creator rather than adapter (with mixed results — see how they landed with another Kadokawa series Amagi Brilliant Park after YEARS), and here we are.

As for the usual argument "But they have the material! Why don't another studio just pick up on it?" Well it's not as simple either. See what happened with DRRRR — the staff was willing, there was material, but the production committee just didn't care for a sequel. So most of the production staff just set up a new studio to MAKE said sequel.

Personally, I had a feeling that Ordet wanted to get its hands on the franchise for a long time, but as a small studio it simply never had the clout or influence to make a try for it (insert Shirobako-esque politicking here).

So wait where can you watch the simulcast and what time is it? Is it on Crunchy Roll/Funimation (and do I have to pay to watch it on either of those sites) or am I just gonna have to find some backass stream on /a/ or some shit like that?

Not sure, but if it IS on Crunchyroll then the usual deal is you can either subscribe and you get to watch things not long after the Japanese release or you can wait a week for the non-premium release.

FU Ni licensed Yuki, so you'll PROBABLY have to watch it on their player. I assume.

Why are people acting like the novels are done? People in this thread have mentioned that the novels are still continuing. Hell there was a four year wait between Disassociation and Surpise and we've been waiting about the same length for the next one.

For what its worth, I don't think they're done either. There's just been a bit of a gap. It happens to all writers. More stuff's going to come out given time. I'm not calling the series dead until the author does.

Not everyone can be like Nishio Isin. :>

And yes, four years is quite short — I know some people who're STILL waiting on the continuation to Tytania's novels — but as they say, two-years is enough for many people to forget.

Just a random thought? If Haruhi was making so much cash why didn't just just say screw it, finish adapting up to whatever the latest book is and just diverge and go in its own direction FMA 2003 style? (I don't know jack shit about FMA but people always list that as an example of what I'm talking about)

There's plenty of material to adapt and always has been. I think Kyoani just didn't get a large enough percentage of the profits to feel it was worth their time.

Kyo Ani is just the adapter — the production committee has the first AND final word on adaptations, with Kadokawa (the publisher) usually the big cheese. If they don't shell out the fund, then regardless of the wishes of anyone, you get no adaptation, no sequel.

One of the common theories of Kyo Ani going in-house (Free, Chuunibyou, etc) with their own was because of this — as adapters, they only got a pittance with regards to any profit connected to an adaptation (the majority of which would go to Kadokawa and the TV station instead), but if they held the rights as a creator/producer themselves, they'd get bigger profits.

Just watched the first episode, no subs because I'm not even sure a group has picked it up.

It was pretty much exactly what I expected it to be, which was the slice of life with Disappearance's characters given some tweaks. The pace seems fairly fast, they covered the first four chapters already. They seem to have omitted some of the gags though, and taken some minor liberties.

Really though, I know that it's not S3, it's been obviously not S3, and if anyone is walking into it with that mindset they are going to be drastically, catastrophically disappointed. To me though, there's something nice about the cast getting back together, and while it is unrepentantly fluffy, sometimes that's okay. At least in my books.

I'll need to track it down; I think Funimation's licensed it, so I could probably watch it there, but their available resolutions are pretty low.

Pretty much exactly what I expected, yup. Though, re(reading or watching) the early chapters reminds me of how many slice-of-life caliber problems would be solved if Kyon, Asakura and Yuki just shacked up together.

It's been fun.
