Fine, as long as the tar pits and El Reyes de la Brea still show up, they don't need to be faces and locations. They probably are more of a one-shot foe/place, anyway.

Anyone who assigns themselves loads of character tropes is someone to be worried about.

Right, anything we take off the list can still be in the game, it just won't be a major feature.

The idea for Alexandra is that you'll find out her faerie nature early on, turning her into a contact whenever you need to deal with fancy parties and such. She's supposed to be an ally of convenience, but not necessarily someone you can trust. There aren't really any other faces that could connect you all to the glitz and glam, so I think we should either keep her in or find someone else to take her place.

I'm bad, and that's good. I will never be good, and that's not bad. There's no one I'd rather be than me.

It's Hikari's character (almost finished)! Sorry for the backstory, everyone. (It took me way too long to do.)

Prataab Singh

  • High Concept: Rune Mage

  • Trouble: The Forbidden Fruit Tastes So Sweet

  • Phase 1

    • As a child, Prataab learned to love learning in all its forms. He would spend hours reading books from his grandfather's collection, examine rocks and sand from the beach or the schoolyard, and keep bugs in jars so he could get to know them better. His parents, however, had mixed feelings about his his scholarly inclinations. After all, it brought him closer to his grandfather, the other scholar in the family, and they worried that he might attempt to infuence young Prataab. However, his grandfather made his promises, as always, and they couldn't refuse him. To shut him off from his own grandson would be simply cruel. So they encouraged Prataab, and allowed him to browse his grandfather's book collection, on the condition that he never touch the books that his grandfather kept locked away in his cellar. Prataab complied, although he couldn't help but wonder what his parents had conspired to hide from him.

    • Aspect: Boundless Curiosity

  • Phase 2

    • One day, once Prataab had turned fourteen, his grandfather approached him with a book in his hands. This was nothing unusual, however, something in his grandfather's eyes made him suddenly tense. "This is it, boy," his grandfather said, "You're old enough now. You have a right to know what I've been keeping from you." The book he offered was old and its pages yellowed. Prataab took it apprehensively, and began to leaf through it. The book seemed to speak of circles, designs, strange artifacts and arcane materials, and how they might be used to perform feats of - Prataab suddenly felt as though his soul had been doused in cold water - magic. He looked up at his grandfather, intending to laugh at his (admittedly poor) joke, but the intense look in his eyes choked Prataab's skepticism in his throat.

    • "Is it possible?" he asked. "Magic? Witchcraft?"

    • His grandfather nodded his head solemnly. "But this is no base witchcraft, my boy. This is an ancient art, passed down to us from great scholars who lived centuries before you or I, sages who knew more about the world than any modern scientist could fathom. Under my tutelage, Prataab, you could learn more than you would ever be taught in years of schooling. I could show you great things that those who are too cowardly to believe in never discover. I could show you such things that will make your spirit boil and your blood run cold. You will learn to conjure light with a word, and to summon darkness with a gesture. All the powers of the universe will be yours to command.

    • "Listen, Prataab. I ask this one thing of you. Study magic under me. Though your father may think we can run away, the only thing that can protect us is magic. If you study magic, you will be able to help me protect our family. And I need help." All of a sudden, he strightened up and looked into the distance, as if he could feel a change in the wind. "No time..." he muttered. "Well, look over these, if you want to." He produced a large bookbag, from where Prataab wasn't quite sure, and handed it over. It was heavy. His grandfather smiled. "With any luck, I'll see you tomorrow. Now get home. And don't let your parents find those books!"

    • Prataab left.

    • The next day, he discovered that his grandfather had died in the night. His house had been set ablaze, and he had burned along with all his books. All, that is, except the ones that he had given to Prataab. After the funeral, he began to study them intensely, working to learn the art of magic to protect himself and his family. Over time, he soon acquired more books, since his grandfather's were mostly about practical application. However, they were not all as... accurate as his grandfather's. Now that he's twenty-three and living on his own, he always makes sure to carry around certain odds and ends, such as a bunch of grapes (to throw at malicious faeries), a pinch of grave dirt (to bind ghosts) and an ultraviolet flashlight (to reveal the telltale markings on the skin of a were's human form).

    • Aspect: Full of Misinformation

  • Phase 3

    • "When his parents' house mysteriously burns down, Prataab Singh realizes that he must take action against the threat to his family. Consulting his runes, he begins to seek out others versed in the ways of magic, hoping to enlist their aid in thwarting his unseen enemy. But will he succeed when he must first overcome uncooperative police officers, vampires who are not weak to chives, and a Warden who believes that he may have perpetrated the very arsons he's attempting to investigate?"

    • Aspect: Under the Wardens' Watchful Eyes

  • Phase Four: Guest appearance in Deadly Riposte

    • Prataab, after having a rather distressing run-in with the Red Court (the chives didn't even scare them!), had consulted his runes to find himself someone who could show him a weapon that would be effective against the Reds. This lead him straight to Julian, who had been trying to find out who had stolen the weapon his runes had lead him to. With Julian's aid, he was able to divine the location of the sword (somewhere in the abandoned subway tunnels) and insisted that he come along with Julian to retrieve it, since he wanted to see the weapon with his own eyes. He could even help Julian in combat, since he'd discovered a new secret that was sure to be of help in fighting vampires. Of course, once they got to the tunnels, Julian couldn't help but wonder whether it was wise to have brought Prataab, as he appeared to be confidently wielding a bottle of vanilla...

Here's the list for Phases 4 and 5. After spending half an hour trying to optimize the darn thing, I gave up in the interest of time and used a simple algorithm that will ensure that no two characters appear together twice. As a result, some people get to write the second or third part of one of their own characters' novels, but I don't think that that's much of a problem.

Phase 4 is due in 24 hours so that Phase 5 can begin. You are of course welcome to begin Phase 5 early if your Phase 5 story has the first two parts done.

  • Damien Carver (arks' Blood Junkie Drifter) in Faerie Gang: When a new gang starts rising to power, Damien investigates and finds that a group of changelings have banded together and are using their powers to upset the delicate balance of the city. With their territory expanding and many disasters following in their wake, can Damien help control the situation before the White Council steps in?
    • Gregor
    • Prataab
  • Sandra Meteora (Matrix's Narcissistic Pyromancer Mercenary) in Old Flame: When various creatures from the Nevernever are unleashed to terrorize the city of Los Angeles, the mercenary Sandra Meteora steps up to take them down - for a fee, anyway. Can she stop the monsters before they overrun the city when she is confronted by an old enemy and the ghouls he has hired?
    • Rosario
    • Josie
  • Prataab Singh (Hikari's Rune Mage) in Where There's Smoke: When his parents' house mysteriously burns down, Prataab Singh realizes that he must take action against the threat to his family. Consulting his runes, he begins to seek out others versed in the ways of magic, hoping to enlist their aid in thwarting his unseen enemy. But will he succeed when he must first overcome uncooperative police officers, vampires who are not weak to chives, and a Warden who believes that he may have perpetrated the very arsons he's attempting to investigate?
    • Lucy
    • Sandra
  • Thaddius Grister (Lance's Learned Thaumaturge) in Life as a 20-something Lightmage: The Council is at war, LA is light in red council activity, making it a great position for a training young wardens. But the red Court's not the only thing these kids are going to have to worry about. it's been increasingly cool in a land known for it's balmy weather, and clouds linger far longer than they should. the winds are changing, and Thaddius must discover what is at the bottom of this, to help protect the fledgling wardens, and hopefully prevent an even worse catastrophe.
    • Josie
    • Gregor
  • Josefina “Josie” Torres (Kara's Kindergarten Abjuromancer) in Child Psychology: All kids go through phases, but when half a dozen kindergartners go missing during a field trip and turn up again not twenty minutes later having spontaneously picked up a variety of bad behavioral habits, it’s a good bet that more is involved than just a bump on the road of childhood development. At least that’s how their teacher, Josie Torres, sees it, and as a well-read abjuromancer with the mission of protecting her students from supernatural nastiness, she’s in a position to know. Is it demonic possession? Faerie mischief? Are they all just developing magical abilities of their own? More importantly, will she be able to sort it out without drawing the ire of ignorant school administrators, complacent parents, or the particular supernatural nasties responsible?
    • Julian
    • Lucy
  • Christopher Davis (Staghorn's Part-Troll Professional Dancer) in The Haunting of the Mezo Theater: Strange occurrences have been occurring at the Mezo Theater. A strange rattling can be heard at night, and ropes are pulled seemingly at a whim. Folks call it a haunting. Seeing as a pulled rope could end up with people dead or injured, something must be done. And the person doing the doing is the man called Chris. Can Chris find out what or who's causing this? (Can't be a ghost, no sir, ghosts aren't real, everyone knows that.)
    • Damien
    • Gordon
  • Gordon Bradford (Karalora's Aspiring Stunt Actor) in Hot Set, Cold Chills: When Gordon Bradford got cast as a stunt extra in this year's summer action blockbuster, he never imagined that his first day of filming would end with him accused of stealing the lead actress's favorite scarf from her dressing room. Without any solid evidence, his job is safe...but the production apparently isn’t, as a rash of harrowing accidents befalls crew members and actors alike. Alexandra LaBelle blames the loss of her "lucky" scarf, but what’s really going on? Can Gordon figure it out and become a true Hollywood hero, if only behind the scenes? Or will the escalating mishaps put a fatal crimp in his career?
    • Chris
    • Julian
  • Lucienne "Lucy" Brewer (Staghorn's 7-year-old Were-bear) in Lucy's Tunnel Trek: It's normal for kids to go exploring. However, the many, many vast tunnel systems under L.A. are probably a bad place to explore. Sure enough, Lucy soon finds herself alone, lost, and easy pickings for the monsters below, including the remnants of the Red Court. Can she find a way out of the tunnels before she gets injured, killed, or eaten - or worse?
    • Pugnacius
    • Rosario
  • Julian Enoch (Matrix's Master Magesmith and Swordsman) in Deadly Riposte: Master Magesmith Julian Enoch was approached by a representative of the White Court, offering a large sum of money for the crafting a specially enchanted sword - one that can make quick work of a Red Court vampire! Having no love for the Red Court, he accepted the commission. But after completing the sword, his workshop was broken into and it was stolen! Can Julian find the thief and retrieve the sword when he is being chased by Red Court assassins?
    • Prataab
    • Pugnacius
  • Rosario Fernandez (arks' Nebbishy Ailuranthrope Janitor) in New Exhibits: Some new artifacts have been added to the museum and all kinds of weird things start happening. It starts with flickering lights and such, but steadily gets worse and more sinister. Rosario works to find the cause of these new occurrences. Can he find the problem and stop it?
    • Thaddius
    • Damien
  • Pugnacius Hargreeve (arks' Crochety Old Wizard) in Blow, Blow, Thou Winter Court: Something is rotten in L. A. A few actors and politicians have gone missing. Pugnacius decides to investigate, and finds evidence to suggest the Winter Court is behind these abductions. Ever the diplomat, he decides to confront them directly with the small amount of evidence he has. However, is there more going on than what it seems?
    • Sandra
    • Thaddius
  • Father Gregor Hackett (Lance's Midnight Champion of the Unsuspecting) in Shepard of the Long Night: Children have been disappearing lately. The Milk Carton has a new face every day it seems, and Father Hackett knows better than to believe in coincidences. He's seen increased signs of ghoul activity, which is odd. Being by their very nature cowards something must be pressing the ghouls into this increased activity. They can't be eating all of them, It doesn't feel right at all. Someone needs them for something. Gregor won't let them evade him. He will know who, and why.
    • Gordon
    • Chris

      • The Catch [+2]: Sunlight and holy stuff; no armor on the belly
    • Total Refresh Cost: -13
    • Relationships: Nasir (rival), Vivian Price (likely future subordinate), Fox (wants my head)
    • Ironeye's Note: As Lanshaw is Red Court nobility, he has the ability to sire new vampires, not that he gets many chances with Nasir getting in the way and Fox trying to kill him. For his enhanced ability for being a noble, I chose Recovery with the idea that when Fox and the other wardens came down on the Red Court stronghold, he only make it out alive because of his increased ability to heal. The difficulty of keeping Lanshaw down for long is what makes him so dangerous—his tendency to keep going even when things go to hell around him has given him considerable experience dealing with the sorts of people who want him dead.

Added Sandra's phase 4 to her character sheet:

  • Phase Four Aspect: Like Carrying A Minigun In Each Hand
    • Sandra's appearance in Pugnacius Hargreeve in Untitled: Unfortunately, things do get out of hand. Pugnacius decides that it's time to bring out the big guns, so he hires the mercenary pyromancer Sandra Meteora to help him blast the unchecked fae right back into the Nevernever!

Here's my stuff. At least until Ironeye finds problems with it.

Rosario's appearance in Old Flame: Sandra chases the monsters into an old museum. After hearing the commotion, the janitor Rosario investigates, and misjudges the situation. When he apprehends Sandra, her father escapes. Now they must work together to stop this menace.

Aspect: Do I find trouble or does trouble follow me?

Damien Carver's appearance in Haunting of the Mezo: While on the prowl, Damien sneaks into the Mezo Theatre. After hearing the story form Chris, Damien is reminded of a friend who died recently and used to work nearby. On a hunch, he decides to confront this ghost. Turns out he was right. The bad news is he just gave the ghost a focus, and it's going after every single actor it can get its hands on.

Aspect: Chasing the Past

Pugnacius in Lucy's Tunnel Trek: Lucy runs into Pugnacius who has been following some supernatural happenings down there. After some needling, she convinces him to let her tag along, at least until he finds an exit. However, as they are traveling through the tunnels, they run into a colony or Red Courts, who then start chasing them so they can keep them silent and feed. Can they get out alive with the vamps gunning for their blood?

Aspect: Can't Leave Well Enough Alone

Rosario in Lucy's Tunnel Trek: It's not every day you see an old man and a little girl running for their lives from a group of Red Courts in the tunnels. Rosario found this quite amusing. With his help they were able to drive the group off temporarily. Eventually Rosario agreed to show them the quickest way out of the tunnels. However, the Red Court was still on their tails and closing in fast, and now a group of fae have taken interest in this exchange.

Aspect: Pride in a job well done (Note: the wiki link is important to the aspect)

  • Josie
  • Prataab

Do you want to re-think this? I thought we established that it was pointless to have any one player's character appear in their other character's backstory.

@Kara: I decided to leave those in to make it easier for you to "tag out" in the middle of a session. It's one of those "I'm not sure I can help you, but I do know someone who can" sorts of things.

I think he means that there's a way for you to use character B instead of Character A for a session.

Also, Chris, fighting off minions from the Nevernever? Yeah, that sorta clashes with the whole starting relative Muggle-ness of him. Can that be changed?

So each dot is who the person knows for their phase 4 and 5? so only one connection each phase?

Also @Matrix: I have never played, nor seen Mass Effect played.

As listed above, it's the guest stars for the novel, not the guest-starring roles for the star of the novel. For example, Gregor's story will be continued first by Kara writing Gordon's part, and then by Matrix writing Julian's part.

Ironeye, if you missed my post (and it appears that you have), I would like Chris switched out of Sandra's adventure due to the fact that he is (for the most part) a muggle and fighting beasts from the Nevernever makes no sense for him.

I don't object. I'm not sure what you mean. Why would we swap characters mid-session?

@Kara: I know at least Matrix was considering it.

@Staghorn: There's exactly one Pure Mortal in the group, so you're going to end up dealing with the supernatural somehow—you can't double-star in Gordon's adventure.

@Lance: Your description for the novels of Gregor and Thaddius could use a bit of work. At the moment, they're more character description than novel blurb.

Well, duh, but Matrix's adventure is a tad too... extreme. I'm fine with being in a supernatural adventure, but fighting beasts from the Nevernever is a bit too much.

Slightly related: Besides faeries, what other beasts live in the Nevernever?

And also, Lance, your adventure lacks zip. Why is my character in this adventure, besides the wills of Ironeye?

I have a feeling Lance is going to be rewriting those stories soon.

It's kind of odd he's misinterpreting what we're supposed to do though. Character creation is basically like SOTC only with a Dresden Files setting.

Strictly speaking, anything that lives in the Nevernever can be called a spirit, but it's like how things with backbones are called vertebrates—it's rather general and not very useful. The four main categories of beings are:

  • Demons—think demon stereotypes, along with the additional condition that they cannot enter the physical world unless summoned by a mortal, and make construct bodies when they do enter; associated with the "supernatural nations" of Downbelow or the World Below.
  • Fae—the one sort of Nevernever beastie that has a body of its own; can cross into the real world at will; associated with the nation of Faerie (which is "closest" to the physical world, in relative terms).
  • Ghosts—the metaphysical footprint left by a strong or powerful personality; tend to hand out between the mortal world and the Nevernever or in a personal "pocket domain" in the Nevernever
  • "Concept"/"Pure" Spirits—were never mortal to begin with; cannot comprehend human morality (though the Loa subtype may be an exception); can cross over into the mortal world at will. Bob is an example of this type.

@Staghorn, Kara: I'll switch you guys out. The list will be updated accordingly.

Edit: For everyone else: if you haven't written up your Phase 4/5 yet, your assignment may be changed.

Gah, both of my adventures are from Lance's guys and both of them lack a good hook for my charcter to do something in. Misread, sorry.

Lance, you need to have your character story have stuff happen. Remember, this is your first "book". A Dresden Files book where Harry just went around and did boring wizard things would be boring, no?
