I'm worried this is a setup for the drama CD and/or novelization to do badly.

Maybe there will be an anime, but Miho won't get the part?

Bakuman seems pretty successful now, but I suspect it's going to end when Mashiro and Miho get married. It would lose inertia continuing past that point. Ending it so soon would seem rushed.

...eventually, we will reach a maximum entropy state where nobody has their own socks or underwear, or knows who to ask to get them back.

Well, maybe it would shift focus towards the other Mangaka until each of their dreams come true.

I wonder what will happen with Iwase now.

Also, about the Jump anime method: long-term anime tend to suck and be riddled with filler and QUALITY animation. There is also the Fullmetal Alchemist route, having one series with a Gecko Ending and one "true" series.

Also, as for the selection of the studios... if I ever become a successful Mangaka, I will not wait for anime companies to present me with requests. I will send request after request to GAINAX (who made a wonderful job of adapting To Love Ru) or Kyo Ani or Bones. I had rather get a shor, awesome, memorable series, than the horrific pieces of crap that are the One Piece, Naruto and Bleach Anime. Not to mention D.Gray-Man... Why can't they do anything right apart from the openings and endings?

^ I fully agree with you. There is a reason I gave up animes with more then 2 cours. It seem that, no matter how popular the manga is, there is never enough budget to keep going along side with the manga.

I bet 5 bucks that the editor-in-chief- will simply say 'no' to the anime proposal. Because

  • A: It's too soon. Too little material, and filler not done by the original creators will water down the quality.
  • B: He's a dick.

That being said, yay for at least getting a proposal.

^ It is just me who thinks th Editor-In-Chief is actually pretty reasonable? If he declines the offer I would think he is right.

^ No, I think he's pretty reasonable too, to be honest. He's a bit played out as an obstacle to their career, but if you really think about it, every decision he made makes sense.

Yeah, but just because he's right doesn't mean he's not a dick.

And yeah, I see him vetoing the anime offer. It's just the kind of soul-crushing but ultimately smart kind of thing he does.

What does Jump stand to lose if the anime does badly? The manga doesn't finance the anime, does it? Presumably if the PCP anime does badly, it could negatively affect the sales of the manga, but I doubt it has as much capacity to affect sales negatively as positively.

It has because it is a wasted opportunity of effect the sales positively. Even if the sales don't drop due to a bad anime, it fail to raise. Witch is bad. Giving PCP is in TOP 5 without an anime, getting it to be the most popular manga of Shonen Jump is not a dream.

Of course, I find quite unrealistic a non fighting manga becoming the most popular shonen, but whatever.

Oh come on! Fighting is not parallel to awesomeness. Done badly, it is even orthogonal. No, awesomeness is due to Emotional Torque. Which can be caused by other stuff entirely.

How popular was Death Note on average during its run, at least during the first half?

^ I never said I like fighting manga. But they are the most popular. Death Note is awesome and probably went very well, but I doubt it was more popular then One Piece or even Naruto at the time.

^ Well, PCP is fifth though. That seems perfectly possible to me.

^ That I agree. However, I was pointing that PCP is the 5th without an anime. You would expect it will grow after getting one right? And, since they are the protagonists and all, it wouldn't be strange if they actually get the first place (it has to happen sometime). I don't think it is unrealistic now, just that might become unrealistic latter.

^ Getting the first place once or twice doesn't seem that farfetched to me, to be honest. Now, if the authors make them first for a long time, yeah, I can understand your complaint, I can't see One Piece being beaten any time soon, especially by a manga like PCP.

^ But I think they will become the first for a long time at some point and it is about it I am talking about. I am not talking about "being the first once", but "being the first period". Isn't that their dreams? This is still a shonen, after all.

But, then, given even Niizuma is just the third, it wouldn't be strange if Ashirogi Muto also only become the third in the end.

Yes, but that's because One Piece is just plain awesome, not because of the fighting scenes, which, were it not for the jokes and the melodrama, are really really not that awesome. For a manga that really relies on fighting to carry it, see Bleach: results: So Bad, It's Good and Bile Fascination

But the second more popular is Naruto isn't it? And before them the most popular were Dragon Ball and Fist Of The North Star. My point is that figthing manga are consistently the most popular manga. That is why the two considered so many time making a fighting manga. Of course, a fighting manga that is only fight and nothing else is bad, but that don't change the fact this genre is more popular. I am not saying they can't surpass a fighting manga (they more likely will surpass Crow at some point). But it is weird the most popular manga of Shonen Jump not being a fighting one (because it is how it has be being for a long time).

Btw, Bleach is still one of the most popular of Jump right?

^ And yet Bleach ranks incredibly and consistently high with Shonen Jump questionnaires.

@WUE: Ain't Bleach more popular in the US than Japan? Still popular, but not as popular?

^^ They divulge this questionnaires? Where can I see it?

^ I think it is the case, the same way One Piece is more popular in Japan then in US. However, this wouldn't change the fact Bleach is still amazingly popular in Japan.

Ehr, sorry I should have been clearer and speak about sales instead of questionnaires. My fault. And I think that Bleach is a little bit less popular in Japan, but it's still consistently just behind Naruto and One Piece (which, by the way, leaves practically the rest of the manga market far behind). Or at least, that's what I've seen with sales charts with the last volumes. Granted, I may be misremembering, so don't take my words for granted.

Makes sense. People I've met irl that like Bleach mainly do so for the Rule of Cool. Style over substance does work occasionally.
