Yeah. Perhaps I'm a bit distracted on a subconsciously constant basis these days, what with all the real life shit I have to deal with right now.

On a separate note, am I on to something with what I said about Kodama's expression, or could it be I'm imagining things?

A kind request: Does anyone have a HQ version of this image? I've been able to find HQ versions of almost every official Eva except this one - which is ironic, because out of all the official Eva images, I like this one the most. Kaworu's giant head just seals it for me.

... I know I saw this image before. I think I may have it in my archive of NGE images. I'll dig through it when I get back from my university class.

~Yasmin Perry: Odd. I have a pic that is almost but not quite like it, plus another that only has Asuka and Rei. Here they are.

On a different note, for those of you who've read the manga spin-offs of the AU world where apparently no Second Impact happened, what city are the characters living in? Is it just Tokyo, or did they somehow have to build Tokyo-2 and -3 for some other reason?

So I've been watching EOE again, and I noticed something really strange: During Yui's short talk/hallucination (? I honestly don't know) with Gendo, her clothes inexplicably change during the scene. Here are some screenshots:

At the scene's beginning: [1], [2], and Suddenly Kaworu.

Midway throughout the scene, and at the end of it: [3] & [4].

Does anybody know if there's an actual reason for this, or is it simply an animation error or something? And if it's just an animation error, how come no one at GAINAX caught this before the movie's release? I personally don't think it's an animation error, given how much time and effort Anno put into EOE. Any thoughts?

Maybe it's her at different points of her life?

Yeah, maybe. I think she is there as a soul, but the way Gendou sees her shifts during the scene because she's not really corporeal.

... Also, I just noticed that she seems to have an unusually prominent nose. Cleopatra Nose, anyone?

EOE has way too many scenes where you're left wondering if it really happened or if it was all a hallucination or something. Like the sandbox scene, which I always thought was an extended metaphor, not a flashback.

Not having watched it, it looks like she's in the exact same poses before and after outfit change... which would mean there's no reason to redraw her anyway. Normally they'd just reuse the cells (or whatever it is in digital).

I just watched the first two episodes.

Y'know people give Shinji flak for not wanting to pilot EVA Unit 01 but I have to say that his reasons for not wanting to pilot it are completely justified.

I mean he saw the military fire everything they had including a enviromental friendly nuke and it still didn't. It also didn't help that it was the first time ever did he see Unit 01.

You gotta start somewhere.

And he was probably feeling a seemingly inexplicable sensation of dread and horror specifically directed at Unit 01, due to his subconscious still remembering the exact circumstances in which his mother died before his very eyes.

It says an awful lot about how horrible his childhood trauma is that even when confronted by the very thing that he witnessed taking away his mother, it did not jog his memory at all. It's that heavily suppressed.

... Wow, I completely forgot that I was posting right after someone who just admitted s/he was watching this for the first time. That said, you'd think it's a pretty bad idea to look at the thread when you're a complete newcomer to the series who hasn't watched everything yet, no? I sure as hell wouldn't do it, at least.

[up] I'm not sure if that's supposed to be directed at me.

Whoops! Sorry.

What I meant was that, if this stuff was a year or two old, sure. But whining about spoilers in the context of a 20 years old show is absurd. It's not everyone else's fault that you haven't watched it in that time, so why should they retrain themselves for one person's sake? You're a tiny little minority.

Besides, I think you guys already know my stance on spoilers. That is, that I find the very concept of spoiling ridiculous. If knowing what's going to happen really ruins your enjoyment, then you obviously didn't enjoy it all that much to begin with - because if you did, you wouldn't care, since it would make you want to see that part even more to see how it's executed.

The one new viewer isn't the one requesting they not be spoiled, so I don't know what that "you" of yours is directed to. Anyway, it's always a fun game to spoiler oneself in the presence of a newbie.

I'll watch your reactions with glee, Helios. But perhaps you'd be better off liveblogging? How old are you, by the way?

i get the (possibly quite mistaken) impression that a lot of people who give shinji shit probably don't have much personal experience with depression or self-esteem issues, or don't understand the distinction between "character i don't like as a person" and "character from a literary standpoint and how he fits into the story". the latter is the only one that should matter, in my opinion.

You can't reasonably expect a little kid to want to risk their life against a horrible alien abomination. or they may have watched the dub, i heard spike spencer's performance makes him more obnoxious.

in spite of absolutely crippling fear, in the end he always gets in the robot. he ALWAYS comes back.

There is another possible category of Shinji-haters: Those who do identify with him either consciously or subconsciously, and that fact is something they utterly detest and refuse to ever confront or contemplate because "I cannot be a loser like this little dipshit!"

Yeah, but the kind of people I'm talking about aren't like that. They hate him because he reminds them of themselves a little too much for their comfort zone (which is very small, apparently).

So... there's this thing.

I thought that was supposed to be girl!Shinji, but apparently it's from a twelve-volume yonkoma series that ran between 2006 and 2013. My Japanese knowledge is rather rudimentary but that girl (Sakura Mogami is her name) is apparently an avid Eva fan, with a crush on a Kaworu-lookalike clerk.

If only a translation existed...
