Well perhaps it wasn't a battle per se, but I remember Shinji going to fight Ramiel and promptly getting his ass handed to him at the end of one episode and they destroyed Ramiel in the next. But yes, Rebuild did it better as always.

My favorite, unsurprisingly, is the Black Lagoon opening. The show doesn't need to flash bright colours, magic and mystery in front of you to tell you it's awesome. Eva's is pretty good.

Black Lagoon's is really good, but Madoka's is catchy as hell.

• Hypothesis: Homura is female Shinji.
• Corrolary: Insert an OC in Evafic that acts towards Shinki the way Madoka acted towards Homura. Watch the story change. (Kaoru kinda looked like he'd be like that, but then... so don't think of Kaoru, please, and don't think of grafting Madoka's personality on him: it'd ruin him... would it not?).

That's a very rude way of saying it. All you're missing is a "Hello?" there, to further hammer in that you imply that you are right and that my position is absurd and unthinkable. Allow me to fix it.

Early Homura is a total shinjiesque avoidant, down to the black hair and deep blue-ish eyes. Crippling shyness (Rei is aloof, but she is not shy), deep depression, extremely lonely utter lack of self-confidence, not much of a "soldier" but has a definite psycho streak (I mean, seriously, a golf club?), fiercely and brutally protective of her very few loved ones, to the point of not giving a flying shit what happens to the rest of the universe. She then turns a lot more repressed and gains some of Rei's mannerisms, but she's not emotionally crippled the same way Rei is, not at all, it's all boiling inside, you can see her ready to burst any second, from the very first instant of episode 1. You could say the closest analogue to what Madoka is to Homura is Rei to Shinji, especially in Rebuild: it's the first person they ever felt a strong link with, the first person they felt they could trust, their Protectorate.

Finished ep 1 (shut up, I got disracted). This is odd, this version seems to be a bit different.

One thing is that there is no brief appearance of Unit 00. Another thing is that it had Ritsuko getting out of her scooba gear from the pool of LCL. I don't remember that scene.

Apparently the version I'm watching is Renewal version. Is this version particularly different from the original version or something?

Lolno, Homura's nothing like Rei. Then again practically everyone from Evangelion/Madoka is superior to Rei so that's understandable.

I don't think any of the different versions (original broadcast, director's cut, etc.) have substantial differences until after episode 20 or so. You definitely want to make sure you're watching the director's cut for episodes 22, 23, and 24, in particular, since those have very interesting scenes that were originally left out.

I don't know for sure, though.

I beg to differ. Rei is greater than everyone in Madoka's cast.

Homura would actually be most like KAWORU of all people, imo.

Especially if the sequel theory for rebuild is true.

I finally got around to reading the new manga chapters. I must say, I like Maya's use of the line "Shinji-kun, stop! If you do this any longer, then you won't be able to return, just like last time!" Translation error, perhaps?

I wasn't quite so pleased that Asuka's survival seems to have had absolutely no point. Why even bother if all she was going to do is stand around and shout Shinji's name? Also, I think Gendo's death was a bit less meaningful this time, especially since he's an even bigger douche in the manga, but there's still time.

Watching ep 2.
