I'd suggest some melodeath, but my preferences but I tend to go for the cheesier stuff, dunno if that would work for ya.

[up][up]Ah... Such a shame. If it's not for you then that's just bad luck I suppose. What sort of metal do you normally listen to? Also, is the 'harsh' vocal style part of what puts you off death metal?

Somewhat, though mostly it's that I can't parse any difference in range. I can recognize a distinctive growl, but it seems kinda one-note. Like oh cool brutal sound, that's nice for a headbanging few minutes, but after a few more I just feel it's repetitive.

I normally wouldn't recommend most melodeath due to most of it lacking much in the way of hard death metal characteristics beyond vocals and some rhythmic technique, but there are a few bands that don't suffer from that.

Nothing wrong with being picky, different strokes and all that.

You're not obliged to get into death metal either. You're missing out on a lot but there's no guarantee you'd enjoy it anyways. Some forms of metal take years to get into and a lot of what I enjoy now I did not enjoy five or eight years ago.

Truth. For what I do like, progressive and folk black metal, stoner, sludge, and gothic doom, most power metal, some thrash, and most progressive.

I don't think there are many other fusion styles that work as well as power/thrash.

[up][up] Ah, another doom/stoner-leaning metal person. Cool beans.

Try this. It's a bit on the noisy side, but I think you may enjoy the dynamics.

Both are awesome.

I can't say why, but I find Harsh Noise easier to like than Death, even though they're both severely atonal.

Find it helpful for my depression as catharsis.

I feel similarly, actually. I made a noise topic here a long time ago, but it didn't see much traffic, alack.

Anywho, I am glad to be of service!

It's destructive and brutal, but it's something you can let yourself drown in the feedback, releasing all your pent up energy. It's pure raw sensation, and can be either sublime or disturbing when you find your way back to a resounding silence.

GWAR's new vocalist debuted at the GWAR-B-Q this past weekend. Meet Blothar!

After seeing this guy's performance (not to mention he was Beefcake the Mighty), I'm sure GWAR's in good hands. smile

You know, they're one of those bands I hear that's legendary, but haven't actually heard them.

Also, since growing to love Anaal Nathrakh, I'm finding Grind's really cool. It's relatively formulaic, but thrashy and chaotic, and having a surprising amount of genre diversity.

Anaal Nathrakh are probably the hardest metal band ever, though Sunn O))) is also up there.

As far as death metal goes, The Chasm and Cannibal Corpse are my favorites, though I can chalk the latter up to being nostalgia, since they aren't the best death metal band, but they did get me started on this genre, ten years ago.

Anaal sound tame as hell compared to most war metal and Sunn O))) rely moreso on reverb than genuinely heaviness-invoking composition.

The Chasm are more or less the finest death metal band to date. Constantly evolving band with a grasp on metallic composition and integration of influences that perfectly unites several different generations of metal into a single coherent package.

I'm not really sure it's fair to declare any metal band the 'heaviest,' as that label is mired in subjectivity. Also, no matter how 'heavy' you go, there is still the theoretical capacity for harder music. Even if there is an objective 'heaviest' metal band, it would be impossible to find or pin down which band that was. Also, if there is a heaviest band, it sure as hell ain't Sunn O)))

Heh, Disembowelment seem to actually possess some dynamic range. Sounds pretty damn heavy. I like it.

Maybe it's just aggressively brutal death metal that doesn't agree with me.

Also I think atmosphere is as important as heavyness, and Sun O do deliver in that regard.

Honestly I don't care about atmosphere much anymore because it's such a vague and arbitrary term. All music has "atmosphere" to me, some bands just tend to use more vast tonal space than others and get deemed "atmospheric". If the riffing and songwriting is good, that's what's most important for me. Atmosphere's just the clothing someone's wearing and their accent.

[up]I always thought that 'atmospheric music' was more of a definite style. Like, as a song gets less melodic and riff-driven, it gets more atmospheric, as opposed to the atmosphere that a particular band projects, which is largely based on what you said.
