So it seems that a lot of the "entry-level" metal you guys gave me consists of "classic metal". Is there any entry-level "modern" metal out there, like thrash, for example?

Please help out our The History Of Video Games page.Thrash for the most part is "classic" in that the grand majority of its major quality acts, entry-level or otherwise, were from the 1983 - 1991 era. But if you do want some more modern examples, the German band Paradox had both excellent 80's and 2000's material. The now defunct Imagika have some pretty ballsy stuff. Pathos from Sweden are good if you want a prog-tinged take on the style, Hybris as well although they're comparatively far more ballsy and the prog part is kept mostly understated.
Only Death Is RealThe Big Four is where every thrasher starts (which includes the aforementioned Megadeth and Metallica). Outside of them, Overkill, Testament, Exodus are all worth respecting for the simple fact that they're still touring, and the Teutonic Big Four (Kreator, Sodom, Destruction, and Tankard tend to get thrown in while some prefer to exclude them and change the title to "big three") are good to look into as well.
Redeemer of Souls, Judas Priest's new song revealed
This riff is pretty nice, but not world-shattering by Priest standards. The chorus has a bit of a power metal vibe to it. Thought the solo could've been longer (perhaps Tipton doesn't bounce off Faulkner the way he did with Downing). Halford's voice is showing its age, but he can hardly be blamed for that (he's still better than most). Overall, Travis might have been the best part of the song.
I think it has some similarities to Night Crawler, and someone in the comments compared it to Hell Patrol. So, it could be seen as a stylistic Call-Back to the Painkiller album.
Still wishing for Angel of Retribution part 2...

It's better than the stuff on Nostradamus at least. Okay track.
Only Death Is RealSabaton released another song from their upcoming album, "Heroes", Resist and Bite, about the Chasseurs Ardennais, a belgian army squadron, in their struggle against the german blitzkrieg.
The other two from the same album that they released beforehand were to Hell and Back (about Audie Murphy, the most condecorated soldier in US history. Most of the chorus is lifted from one of Murphy's poems) and Far from the fame (about Karel Janousek, a czech air marshal and hero of both world wars).
The album will also include a song called "Smoking Snakes", about the Brazilian Expeditionary Force (whose logo is my avatar) in World War two. As a Brazilian, I'm goddamn hyped.
"All you Fascists bound to lose."[hype intensifies]
But damn, that sounds really cool.
Speaking of Sabaton, has anyone heard anything from the band Civil War? It's what was formed when Sabaton lost a few members a while back.
OH GOD WHY AM I A CAR!? - ForzareFrom what I heard, they released an album called "The Killer Angels", and that they are pretty much doing Sabaton's exact same shtick: History-based Power Metal (one of the songs in that album is called "Rome Is Falling", another is "Custer's Last Stand"). Though they sound very different because their vocalist is more of the classic clean Power Metal voice, in contrast to Joakim's distinctive thundering tone.
Here's one of their songs, "Rome Is Falling".
They've been apparently very succeful in Sweden in their single album.
They have a very cool and powerful sound, but I think Sabaton is a superior band, specially in terms of vocals.
"All you Fascists bound to lose."I've heard their first album is good, but I would agree that vocally they kind of dropped the ball. Note that the singer isn't the problem, he is fucking awesome and his potential would blow your mind, "Gettysburg" is merely the tip of the iceberg for him. I think the problem is that they haven't figured out how to use him yet.
For reference, find an album by Wuthering Heights (Danish band) called Salt, it's pretty much what they could have gotten, but didn't.
OH GOD WHY AM I A CAR!? - ForzareWuthering Heights are incredible, definitely one of the higher tier prog/power bands out there from the third album onwards. Their incredibly dynamic, riffy approach to folksky metal reminds me of Manticora but without the darker atmosphere and made way more bombastic.
Only Death Is RealI honestly didn't like them all that much until The Shadow Cabinet came out, before that, meh.
OH GOD WHY AM I A CAR!? - Forzareannnnnd, now I'm working through Wuthering Height's stuff. It's been too long since I dug more into metal, haha.
"Coffee! Coffeecoffeecoffee! Coffee! Not as strong as Meth-amphetamine, but it lets you keep your teeth!"Need some new stuff to get into. Looking for the sort of heavier end of power metal, like Iron Savior or Sabaton.
Direct all enquiries to Jamie B GoodThese guys. Very thrashy prog-power with a darker, more forbidding atmosphere than most. They ditch the keyboards later on in their career unfortunately.
There's a FB group I go to where these guys are fairly well respected. I like what they're doing - very spacious, "atmospheric" power metal.
Only Death Is RealSo... I've been getting into a lot of trv and kvlt music lately.
I started with this, which was cool.
Then I moved onto this, which was even better.
And then I got to this shit... Before I heard this, I thought that Varggoth was an otherwise clever guy who just had some really... extreme ideologies, but this is just so dumb. It's like this guy thinks that to be trv metal, (or whatever he's naming his idiot squad) you have to wear underpants with spikes on the inside and shit fear.
I just don't understand why an otherwise talented musician would be such a dick!
Trv blvck mvtvl is rvally cvvl in genvral thouvh.

"I thought Djent was just a band" -Physical StaminaSo, I did my own take on the "map of metal"◊ concept.
It's a very convenient guide for the beginning metalhead: it tells you not only which styles evolved from which, but also how you should feel about them in order to fit in among the general community.
Mache dich, mein Herze, rein...Not bad, not bad at all.
I enjoy at least two of the genres in the "shit everyone hates" bubble. I'm a terrible metal listener.

ehh, metalcore can be "ok" I'm typically not a fan of it in general though.
"Coffee! Coffeecoffeecoffee! Coffee! Not as strong as Meth-amphetamine, but it lets you keep your teeth!"Speed metal should be linked to power metal as its usage of streamlined sometimes heavily single string riffing is something the modern European school would feature quite prominently. Also, Manowar aren't really power metal at all - way too primitive and rooted moreso in the heavily 70's influenced "epic" school of heavy metal (Manilla Road, Cirith Ungol, Dark Quarterer) than the energetic often more vocally centric and lead-guitar prominent form of power metal. It'd be better to put in some older American bands like Liege Lord, Omen, and Helstar.
Only Death Is RealI'm an unapologetic Slipknot fan, so yeah.
I confer with the fellow tropers, that is a nifty map. I'm not sure Behemoth fits into Black Metal though. I haven't heard any of their early stuff, so possibly take that with a grain of salt. I was also under the impression that 2nd wave Black Metal was exclusively a term for Euronymous and his Legion of Doom.
"I thought Djent was just a band" -Physical Stamina2nd wave refers more to time frame than anything else, which is why you seen non-Norwegian bands like Root, Sigh and Rotting Christ in there. I'm pretty sure the term was coined by Norwegians (Fenriz?).
Behemoth's early stuff was BM and I think they still don the corpsepaint live.
I borrowed it from Disc World. There's a religion that, while very popular, has very many disagreements about the specifics of doctrine, dogma, and basically everything else. The adherents all SAY they're the same religion, but no two listen to the same sermon, and they can be very different from preacher to preacher. They're addicted to religious balkanization into new and more specific sects.
I found the parallels amusing.
