Heavily misused: Oh Crap

Again, only 3 out of 13 wicks were potholes, and those were from games, that largely rely on player reactions.

It is likely that the "heavy" misuse reported by the OP is a result of a biased example list, that was already restricted to the otherwise small number of misused wicks.

So Yeah was never more commonly as trope examples than as natter. Also, it wasn't used as the appropriate on-wiki invocation of a trope that is also used in works, just meaningless natter.

The potholes of Oh, Crap! are closer to the cases when someone writes a list of the main characters with a funny name at the end, and potholes it to My Friends... and Zoidberg.

That's still misuse. And even if the OP's list was biased, thirteen pages is not large enough of a sample size to accurately see if it's being misused, considering the trope has four thousand or so wicks.

One thing is, is this just character trope. Why can't it be player, Ghandi comes, tell you his words are backed by NUCLEAR WEAPONS and declares war?

From what I have seen, it is used more in like in terms that somethign happens, and person(reader, player, character etc.) realises how screwed he/she/it/someone is. Like, when Big Bad is shown holding Artifact of Doom which was tought to be hidden. Viewer might at this point resort to Oh, Crap!, since he knows how badly heroes are screwed. Does the fact that heroes don't know why viewer does Oh, Crap! make it incorrect use?

If it does, whole trope is badly misused.

If not, there are only few misuses.

Also, is Mass Effect example, this is used for player reaction. Sovereign almost destroyes enitire fleet. Without even really putting his mind on it. This is Oh, Crap! from player, who sees how powerfull enemy is, and it isn't even trying. To put better example: playing Mincraft busting open cavern adn seeing 5 creepers rushing towards you. Player is guaranteed to make Oh, Crap! reaction.

That's still misuse.

No, it's not. If I write an example that starts with "the Presidents, and Franklin Roosevelt...", that is an example of the My Friends... and Zoidberg trope, and it can be noted as such, even if it doesn't appear in any work.

You might call it a bad editing habit, and say that editors are not supposed to use tropes to begin with, (though I disagree with that), but it's not a misuse of the title, for something that it doesn't mean.

Even if we would call it Oh Crap Reaction, people could keep using the same potholes, as in "This sentence was written to evoke an Oh, Crap! reaction".

...I never said that wasn't an example of the trope. You said "a list of names with a funny name at the end." Which is not an example of My Friends... and Zoidberg. Regardless, this has nothing to do with what we're talking about.

Even if we would call it Oh Crap Reaction, people could keep using the same potholes, as in "This sentence was written to evoke an Oh Crap reaction"

That would be more clearly wrong, and would be easier to clean up. "Oh crap!" is something you say when something bad happens. Oh Crap Reaction is a reaction, and potholing that when you intend for the reader to be shocked is a bit like explaining the joke.

Oh Crap Reaction is dreadful, and there is really no need to add an extra word just for the sake of it. Its a well established trope with little misuse for its age and prevalence.

Or we could call it Aagragaah, after the Discworld Trollish word for forebodings that carries an Oh, Crap! connotation. (Translation: "Yes" > Literature explains further.)

I've seen Oh, Crap! used as an audience reaction trope. For an example:

  • Oh, Crap! - The reaction player gets when he's out of uranium ore.

[up]That is the problem. Also, that's not an example due to Oh, Crap! being about a facial expression. Two people tried to run threads to replace the image for being Just A Face And A Caption, there fore they never read the page. A rename seems impossoble, but it needs massive clean up.

I'm not so certain that Mezzo Forte is a misuse as opposed to being a poorly written example... when that event happened, the characters did have an "Oh Crap!" reaction IIRC.

[up][up] It's not specifically about a facial expression, but about the realization, that can be demonstrated by a facial expression.

For example a faceless voice saing "Oh Shit, we are doomed" is still an example of the trope.
