So my maze is absolutely devastating.
Enemies are funneled and forced to zig zag, about 10 times across at least 10 tiles each lap, with five catapults firing at them the entire time. That's not the deadly part. There are only two traps on it near the end, one with 5 copper corkscrews and 5 copper serrated discs, the other with 10 weapons I picked up from everyone dying. Those also aren't the deadly part.
Really, all those are just a distraction to force a dodge or to throw the enemy back because two levels below the maze is a pool of drainable magma. There's so much iron down there and no other crappy crap.
Oh yeah, there are also a bunch of cage traps, and I dug out another pit of death.
"Never let the truth get in the way of a good story." Twitter@Tueful: Yes, whips are blunt weapons so their damage is affected by mass.
So the flying functions more like a moat than anything else?
Bizarre.
I like your death maze already. I read a suggestion that has a two tiered maze filled with traps you open and close doors to keep the enemy pathing through the traps. When they are all dead you open it all up and let your dwarves go harvest your gains.
Who watches the watchmen? The main problem with the death maze is that when I send my militia in to take care of stragglers and/or chase off a horde, they run a very real risk of dodging into the fire. I've lost two dwarves so far, and somehow when I was pitting a goblin that refused to die in my sparta-pit, a mother and child fell in too.
"Never let the truth get in the way of a good story." TwitterYeah. I use my burrows until the invaders/raiders are dead or are retreating. My poor military dwarves lost a comrade to an ambush. :( My wife was playing the fort in our succession game and was running off some ambushers that refused to get caught in the traps or walk on the bridge death traps that lead to the fall onto some upright spikes. It used to house some tame grizzlies and cougars though. (I have a named a Grizzly and a named cougar from that use :3
Who watches the watchmen?I build a long, three or two block wide corridor leading to a massive circular room as my entrance. Every square in the corridor is (in a good fortress) filled to the brim with weapon or cage traps, and a ballista at the end.
Simple, but effective in my opinion.
Must be a hell of a commute; deathtrap, deathtrap, deatht-oh, booze!
Can you build retractable guards over the pits for when you militia enter? Grates or bridges or retractable bars?

Not once the damn tower-cap farm is complete they won't.
Hah, for a moment I Read That As "every square in the fortress is covered in traps.
[[tvtropes.org/pmwiki/lb_i.php?lb_id=12919183980B30760200 Liveblog of]] John Carter Of MarsThat's step two.
Doc Rock. I like your avatar.
Chow yun fat right?
You can build retractable bridges over pits or as roofs. My entrance is a long straight wall that leads over a deep pit covered by the draw bridges and I plan to make it bigger and line the bottom completely with upright spikes :3 I have found enemies can survive a 5 z level drop fairly well. I wonder could they survive a 10 z level drop? Yeah that will show the bastards.
Ok I am now tempted to learn to mod to make a fire breathing trap.
Who watches the watchmen?Yeah, haven't used it in a while, it's from A Better Tomorrow. Now I'm picturing a dwarf going Guns Akimbo...
[[tvtropes.org/pmwiki/lb_i.php?lb_id=12919183980B30760200 Liveblog of]] John Carter Of MarsI thought that shot looked familiar. I already own Hard Boiled I want a better tomorrow.
Dwarf fortress does hard boiled.
Give a dwarf a crossbow he is super man. Give him two and he is god.
Who watches the watchmen?Hm. Retractable bridges is a pretty great idea. Looks like I need to churn out more mechanisms.
"Never let the truth get in the way of a good story." TwitterThey are very handy things. I use them to pull the rug out from under enemies for a giggle. I am planning a catapult kind of thing where I use multiple bridges to randomly fling enemies around. Or I could just use the suggestion of building a support and attach a floor tile on top and one over that and either attach it to a switch or pressure plat. DF landmine. Might make an interesting test of traps. things can pass through supports right?
Who watches the watchmen?yup
everyone in my fortress is so social it's ridiculous. every time one person dies, like 50 people get pissed off.
"Never let the truth get in the way of a good story." TwitterPoor Poor Ch00beh. That is why I keep them as busy as possible. Anyone not working gets to haul rocks. Well not all of them I do let them have breaks.

Who watches the watchmen? It's ok. I have this bad boy◊.
While I work on my paper, I'll be having retractable bridges built and I'll have the buffer zone get better at being a buffer and potential shooting place. Magma is not below because I was draining it to get to the delicious goblinite.
"Never let the truth get in the way of a good story." TwitterI thought iron stuff melted in magma?
Who watches the watchmen? If I said I wanted to split the page up into tropes that apply to the game in general, ones specific to fortress mode, and ones specific to adventure mode, would anyone else help me?

Hmm I could lend a hand just set up the subpages and we can help you sort the various tropes. that page is pretty trope heavy.
Who watches the watchmen?Iron melts in magma if you give it enough time. Alternatively, you flash fry.
"Never let the truth get in the way of a good story." TwitterSo drop them in and then drain the magma away then.
Who watches the watchmen?Wasn't there something about things getting a dangerous magma coating or gaining and not later losing temperature?

It doesn't move forward or backwards, though.
