I mean, I'd be happy if they at least brought back the old feature of having rulers be dressed in era-appropiate clothes. I remember Bismarck going from barbarian clothes to a modern attire in one of the older titles.

[up][up] Sounds really un-fun. I don't remember which version(s) of Civ had revolutions, but I didn't enjoy that mechanic at all.

[up] It was a bit vexing to have hard-won progress erased because your cities were "supposed" to revolt, yes. On the other hand, Civ IV was the game where you could open the world editor in-game, so it was pretty simple to get those cities back if you didn't feel like playing by the rules.

[up][up] Civ III was the last to do that, I believe. Nothing like watching Joan of Arc become a buzz-cut woman in dog tags and an ARMÉE shirt.

Evolving the leader appearances for each era is cool, yes, but when applied to animation, it requires a lot more resources. Firaxis doesn't seem to want to spend in that area any more than it has to.

Given how much effort they put into the various cultures' aesthetic styles these days, it would also probably take a hell of a lot more research.

The devs held a R&F livestream today. Infodump incoming! I missed the livestream personally, so this thread is my source.

  • The Matterhorn is a new natural wonder.
  • Governments had some of their bonuses changed up:
    • Classical Republic: Cities with a district now get +1 housing, in addition to the amenity.
    • Autocracy grants its yield boost to both the capital and the city with a Gonvernment Plaza. I doubt it stacks with itself.
    • Oligarchy grants its combat bonus to anti-cavalry units as well.
    • Monarchy lost the production bonus to walls.
    • Merchant Republic lost its old bonuses, gaining a 25% discount on Gold-buying Great People and a 15% Production bonus towards districts.
    • Communism lost the combat boost and gained a Production boost of 0.4 per citizen in each city with a Governor.
    • Fascism gained a 15% War Weariness reduction.
    • Democracy lost its old bonuses, gaining +2 Production and +1 Housing per district, and a 25% discount on Gold purchases. Me likey a lot.
  • Seondeok’s agenda: Science good. No science bad.
  • Era dedications have you choose from a set of four, depending on the era and type of era you’re entering. Examples from the Renaissance Golden Age.
  • Kotoku-in (the Buddha wonder) grants +20% faith to its city and spawns four Warrior Monks.
  • Archivo General de Indias unlocks at Cartography.
  • Taj Mahal unlocks at Humanism.
  • St. Basil’s Catherdal unlocks at Reformed Church.
  • Commercial Hubs and Harbors no longer grant trade routes in their own right. You have to build the Market or Lighthouse.
  • Amber is a new luxury, appearing on both land and water.
  • Reefs are a new coastal feature (not a resource). You can’t build wonders or districts on them, but resources can appear there.
  • Free Cities have a red-on-black banner.
  • The seven Governors are Magnus the Steward, Liang the Surveyor, Pingala the Educator, Victor the Castellan, Amani the Diplomat, Moksha the Cardinal, and Reyna the Financier. I was hoping for civ-specific governor names, but oh, well.
  • Image of Liang’s abilities. Base ability is +1 Builder charge. Others include boosting production of City Center and Government Plaza buildings, same for Entertainment Complex and Water Park (that new Ferris wheel district, I presume) buildings, boosting district production, Fishery improvements, and City Park improvements. The latter grants +1 Amenity if adjacent to water.
  • There’s a Bread and Circuses City project for Loyalty.
  • Founding Fathers now changes a Diplomatic policy slot to a Wildcard. I hope this is on top of its old bonus, as a policy substitution by itself is...underwhelming.
  • First building for the Government Plaza is the Audience Chamber, Warlord’s Throne, or Ancestral Hall.
  • Second building is the Foreign Ministry, Intelligence Agency, or Grand Master’s Palace.
  • Image of the era progress screen.

Stream should be uploaded to You Tube tomorrow.

  • The rebalancing of governments is nice. I never have any reason to use anything other than, in order: Autocracy, Merchant Republic, Communism, unless I decide to be an absolute warmonger. Now Democracy looks amazing.
  • Era dedications look interesting; they certainly add some flair to the process of mechanically marching through them.
  • The change to Commercial Hubs and Harbors is interesting. I wasn't aware that getting the Trade Route that early was mechanically broken in any way, but it is a bit incongruous with other Districts, where you need a building in them to start getting their true potential developed.
  • I'm hoping that Loyalty isn't too onerous a mechanic. Keeping cities happy and loyal is important, of course, and it'd be nice to have some penalty for going super wide, because it's way too easy right now to steamroll yourself to victory with warfare.

[up]Autocracy? Funny, that’s my least-used early government by far. Classical Republic in peacetime for me: gotta get them sweet, sweet Great People.

Something else nifty: legacy bonuses have been reworked. Rather than you keeping a portion of the percentage-based bonus, constructing a government building unlocks a Republican/Monarchial/Whatever Legacy wildcard policy, which replicates one of that government’s bonuses (+1 housing and amenity to cities with districts for Republican Legacy, for example).

Had a rather interesting start with my current game.

Playing as Rome, I load in, settle my city, and send my warrior out to explore my immediate surroundings. At the end of turn 3, I meet Germany. After I finish greeting him, I look to find out where his warrior came from.

Turns out it wasn't his warrior. It was his settler. Who, by sheer chance, walked into a hex directly next to my warrior.

Figuring I wasn't playing on a high enough difficulty for the AIs to spawn with extra settlers (does that even happen in this game?), I realize that he hasn't even founded his capital yet. So naturally I declare war (and Barbarossa gives his whole "You fool! I've defeated foes much greater than you!" spiel), and less than 5 seconds later, Germany is eliminated from the game. Fastest war ever.

From there I found out my only neighbors on this continent were India (who immediately denounces me for my violence, despite there being no witnesses) and Kongo. I declare war on India and surround his capital right as he completes Stonehenge (though somehow I didn't receive his Prophet when I captured the city), then not long after I start getting my Legions, which I used to assimilate Kongo.

Now I'm far enough ahead in tech that once I finally met another civ (Egypt), I was able to declare a colonial war on them. Still looking for whoever the last civ in the game is, but once I find them, they're not long for this world.

And I figure this is all because of that snowball that started when I eliminated Germany and used their settler to start a second city on turn 5.

I really wish they'd fix that bug that leads to a crash when you try to exit the game,I've heard it's caused by windows defender so I decided to try and add the folder containing the exe to the exceptions list, for some reason they hid it away inside several folders.

Also, loading times in this game are a pain

It's not so much a crash for me as it is a hard-lock, requiring me to force quit the game. And yeah, there's no excuse for the huge load times.

Capturing enemy cavalry units. Ouch. Unless horses got nerfed to hell and back, it means "being better at the most important thing in the game".

Thus continues my habit of playing obviously offensively geared civs defensively. Seriously, Genghis' benefits are also pretty good for keeping yourself perfectly defended from your neighbors (who tend to be your worst enemies in VI, though not so much as in V), while building up a large degree of wealth through trade.

Babylon is now a city-state, presumably as the new Seoul.

Okay, Mongolia looks seriously cool (both mechanically and aesthetically), and seriously scary. I like the uncertainty, if your neighbor Genghis is sending a trade route your way, of whether he just wants some more money or is gearing up for an invasion. Aw, who am I kidding, it's definitely the latter.

Leader agenda: Horse Lord. He wants all the cavalry. Huh. Would have expected something about hating people who refuse his delegations.

[up][up] I don't think he cares about emissaries, since he gets info by just sending trade routes. Which basically makes him better at espionage than Catherine who is supposed to be focused on it - but Cathy really sucks, so it's not a surprise for her to be overpowered (France buff plz).

[up][up][up]Ghayir-Khan Inalchuq probably thought so, too.

Now I'm imagining what it would be like to have both Tomyris and Genghis Khan as your neighbors. Not really fun, probably.

Infodump from today’s livestream:

  • Genghis’ LUA can capture other civs’ unique units. Fear the Mongol Mamluk!
  • Devs are keeping their mouths shut on who the Great General replacing Genghis is. My money’s on Subutai.
  • Diplomatic visibility will give everyone a combat buff in R&F, not just Mongolia. Catherine de Medici is pleased.
  • Antioch has replaced Amsterdam as a city-state.
  • Map placement has been tweaked to spread major civs out more.
  • The settler lens now warns you about areas where a new city would suffer significant loyalty pressure.
  • Matterhorn is the successor to Civ V’s Kilimanjaro. +1 Culture to adjacent tiles, and military units who move adjacent get the Alpine Training promotion: normal movement over hills, and +3 Combat Strength when fighting on hills.
  • Roraima is four tiles (not in a diamond shape, surprisingly), and it grants +1 Faith and Science to adjacent tiles.
  • Olives are confirmed as that new luxury resource that grows on trees.
  • Vilnius has a new suzerainty bonus: “For the highest active Alliance level, all your Theater Square districts receive +50% adjacency bonus.”
  • We have a new casus belli: Golden Age War. Reduced penalty for annexing a pitiful, non-Golden-Age-having civilization into your glorious empire?
  • The Dutch delegation brings wooden shoes, cheese, and stroopwafels.
  • Image of the Medieval Era golden age dedications. Monumentality and Exodus of the Evangelists were also on the Renaissance list from last week.
  • Some existing civs have had their colors tweaked. Indonesia is now minty green text on a red field (Morocco screams in frustration), and Australia is now black text on a green field.
  • Polders must be adjacent to three flat land tiles. They are still water tiles, but the devs are considering tweaking their effect on naval movement rate.
  • Wilhelmina’s agenda: Billionaire. She likes civs who send trade routes to the Netherlands and dislikes civs who don’t.
  • New three-tile natural wonder spotted in the desert. Looks like the Richat Structure. Maybe a Production+Sience yield?
  • Cities you risk losing to Loyalty issues are marked on the map by a red fist.
  • Image of the new policies, all of which use the Wildcard slot, for a Medieval dark age. Isolationism (+1 trade route capacity, +2 Food/Production to domestic routes, can’t settle new cities) looks pretty sweet. Inquisition (can launch an inquisition with 1 Apostle charge instead of 3, +15 Religious Combat Strength on home turf, -25% Science)...not so much.
  • City-state district bonuses from envoys now apply to the first-tier (at 3 envoys) and second-tier (at 6 envoys) buildings, not the districts themselves.
  • Trade routes finally have a sort-by-yield function.
  • Victor the Castellan’s base ability seems to be +5 Combat Strength to his assigned city. Compared to Liang or Pingala, I can’t say I’m impressed.

I think this is a reference to how historical Genghis invaded Persia because his delegation was arrested there. He was particularly brutal in that invasion too, sending the message you better not fuck with the ambassadors of the Khan.
