I think I'll play a game of Civ today in honor of the late, great Leonard Nimoy (Civ V modded to use Civ IV's tech quotes). Is anyone else planning to do the same?

Once again I'm shuffling through the Civ V soundtrack and realize how awesome the themes of a certain nation I've never really thought about are.

This time, it's the Mongols.

Jeez, is it just me or do the warmongers get some of the most beautiful peace themes in the game?

Are there any mods that makes Scouts a viable mid or late game unit?

This lack of a feature reminded me of how in Rise of Nations scout units still had a role in the game even as the ages progressed.

In Ro N, at the beginning, Scouts can detect invisible units. Later on they gain the ability to snipe units and damage buildings. Finally they have the ability to jam anti-air structures.

Perhaps some of these principles can be applied to a mod that gives Scouts an upgrade path similar to that of other military units.

There is a mod called Scout Progression I think, that lets them promote to Explorers and Air Ships later. It just makes them better scouts though, not better fighters, IIRC.

They do get small boosts to damage and I think 'speed' I know they get special promotions like being able to scout through borders without open borders.

So I have a stupid question.

Sometimes I need to stay at my sisters house to do some dogsitting when she goes for work related reasons. She has Civ V, but only the Gods & Kings expansion. I came for Civ V on the BNW thing, so I am familiar more with BNW...

is city spamming actually useful in G&K? I know in BNW you can get pretty much everything you could possibly want with like. Three cities tops but I feel sorta encouraged in G&K to cityspam.

Try it and see :P. Its not a necessarily bad thing to do but if you try to do it too fast you'll cripple yourself while if you do it too slow you could end up crippling yourself as well.

If you focus on Religion, City Spam becomes more powerful. Religion is practically built around spamming cities and if you do it well you can get some crazy things like tons of free G Ps.

Yeah that is what I did, actually. I spammed a lot of cities with Ramses.

Have I mentioned I suck at war victories. I do not like having everyone on my ass all the time, and I suck at making other people go to war with me :(

I'm much the same way, but in my case it's because I tend to see war as a distraction rather than an objective. A distraction you always have to be ready for, but something that takes away from developing one's empire nonetheless. Especially in this game, where capturing cities can easily have far more drawbacks than benefits.

Though I'm sure I must have done it at least a few times, I don't remember ever going for a Domination/Conquest Victory in my entire Civilization playing history.

So imo, don't worry about it. smile

Except Attila (And maybe Genghis but for some reason, he always tends to like me until I become a serious threat) early on, I find the AI is usually pretty bad at war. If you have a few half decent natural chokepoints (so you can focus on defending one or two cities, rather than worrying about all of them) then 6-8 units can usually do you through the whole game if you play defensively. Then I tend towards Celts, Incans and other Civs who do well keeping close to rough terraint so I don't know if this is always the case.

Still, on low difficulties, I sometimes have fun having very few units (1-3 maybe), waiting for a Declaration and just spamming military until they start offering me cities. In one game, two separate countries allied in a declation of war on me surrounding a fairly isolated city on the edge of my empire (on Desert/Prarie too) only to surrended a city each to me without me ever having left my territory. It was Prince level, if I recall.

City Spamming is the one time AI can get me in wars; Industrial/Modern Era, I tend to go colonial empire and grab the last few semi-viable spots (sometimes even a really good one that the AI just avoided or was on an island) with ressouces and it's difficult to defend a lone city over the ocean, even with a decent navy. Keeping a couple units can help but more than that and they start looking suspiciously at you anyway which defeats the point.

Finally, if I remember; BNW is sort of the reverse of Vanilla in my experience in terms of non-war victories: Culture still gets a penalty for zealous expansion, while Science doesn't, and in Vanilla, Culture was necessary for a Culture victory. So when I'm stuck in Vanilla, I tend to go City Spammy Science or Tall Culture, which over all works out pretty okay the few times I have tried it.

I tend towards: Culture>Science>Domination>Diplomacy. I always feel like Diplomatic Victory is almost cheating, at least in so far as I've been able to claim it accidently a few times and it generally feels like the easiest "back up" win.

I enjoy Domination but it makes Civ a very different game from the infrastructure building Culture/Science victory that I'm used to, but there is nothing quite as satisfying as turning my scattered Pictish bands or River Raiding War Canoes into a feared force, leading a final charge against the rest of the world as I either march inwards from my coastal Empire conquered generations ago by Canoe until the world is orange or see my Helicopters manned by Blue Tattoed heirs to an empire as they leave my foes country side in ruins, preparing the way for the inevitable Blue/Teal March across the Continent to pipe and bodhran. Or one of the other factions who I accidently end up playing (One domination game saw an end with a Mesopotamian Morocco invading the Persian States of North and Central America who put up admirable resistance)

I suck at making people go into war with me. I cannot get my friends to declare conjoined war, I cannot get them to attack or declare war on me, but I do not want to be suddenly hated by everyone.

Any suggestions?

Buddy up with a warmongering Civ, pick a enemy Civ everyone hates at the time, dump like half your coffers in a trade agreement for going to war, buy a goat, then sacrifice said goat to whatever satanic analogue you believe in. Only after that would you maybe get someone to go to war for you.

I have tried that with Dido but she is not really that warmongery. And by the time i beefed up my army, she no longer wants to invite me to her wars :(

And I am actually going for a conquering victory this time, given how I was giving Oda Nobunaga a try

The most effective way to get the AI to declare war is to have a very weak army. They won't declare on you if you're stronger no matter what the provocation.

They won't declare on you if you're stronger no matter what the provocation.

I don't know. I've had them so that to me on occasion. Usually with dialogue along the lines of "I know the odds are against me but I feel I have no choice"

Montezuma, the back stabbing ass seems particularly prone to do it, but I've had Ghengis Khan, Catherine the Great and Le Petit Corporal pull it on me. Multiple times in one game in Napoleon's case, but that might have been because I was playing England and pushing up right against his border, blocking a natural choke point. Still he declared war on me three times, even after I defeated him every time and took at least one city in every fight.

Was it a good one, or a bad one?

Me, I got tired and declared war on Siam and wiped them out. Theodora and Boudica didn't seem to care much, but The Ottomans are afraid of me. Probably because Theodora has them relegated to a single city in a Byzantium colored continent.

I wonder if they will get too pissed if I wipe off Napoleon, Dido and Wu Zetian...I would be happy to share a continent with Boudicca cuz' she is pretty cool.
