[up] Did you update Fallout 2 with the latest official patch before installing the fan patches? A recent version should have the latest patch already packed in, but if you are using an old version it is possible it did not have the patch.

I don't have much more to offer sadly (apart from the usual "it worked for me, did you follow the installing instructions?" which is never very helpful), which is a pity, because Fallout 2 is really a great game in my opinion.

[up]My version in the GOG version which I bought like a month ago. The GOG version comes with a high res patch. The unofficial patch is the installer one by Killapp (I think) that I got from NMA. I really don't know what to do but possibly post my problems there and keep my personal opinions to a low (to avoid being lambasted). I know though that they'd love people interested in the old Fallouts to be able to play them well and enjoyably, so that goes for me. And NMA isn't as toxic and murderous as Codex.

Also, I know from experience the FO 2 fan patch I use works with the save editors I like grin. No worries in the that department!

[up] Yeah, the fan patch is the one from Killapp. I installed it last year when playing New Vegas caused me an bout of nostalgia and made me complete another Fallout 2 game. I had no trouble installing it, but I don't think I had been using the GOG version but an old CD install instead. Maybe that's where the problem comes from.

Also, I think the high res patch is already included in the fan patch, so maybe that causes a conflict. Depending on when your install crashes, you may try to uncheck it when installing Killap's patch.

Moved from the New Vegas topic, this is for us to pointlessly debate whether FO 1/2's dick is bigger then FO 3's dick.

Any tips for Fallout 1 (part of the Collection)? I'm not enjoying this as much as I thought I would. The interface and the resolution make combat and regular movement exhausting.

Maybe pick a different character? Started with Max Stone because hey, he seems like the only guy who'd be dumb enough to leave the Vault. Head to Shady Sands, the Radscorpion quest seems to be bugged - as soon as I talk to Aradesh, he tells me to talk to Roxlo, who only asks me if I need healing.

So I leave, nothing else of value in this town, Ian requires caps I don't have yet. There's a raider camp not far away - I generally like to explore, but this camp is full of armed raiders that I don't stand a chance against. Move on.

Family of mole rats surround me. Dead.

Restart.

Pack of radscorpions. Dead.

Restart.

Head straight to Vault 15. Mole Rat sprite looks like a Yao Guai. Murder everything in the Vault. Everything's broken. Leave, frustrated by my aching finger. Return and realize the elevator shaft might be a way down. YOU NEED A DAMN ROPE. WHERE DO I FIND F'CKING ROPE, DAMN IT-

And that would be my first 20 minutes with Fallout 1.

Tips? Not going to lie, after hearing about how great these were, I'm a little miffed.

The preset characters are poorly optimized just so you know.

The amount of companions you can have is your CHA divided by half. There are 4 permanent companions total, but if you boost your CHA before you recruit extra campanions then you'll still keep them until you dismiss them.

I think you can buy some rope off a merchant in Shady Sands.

If you can find Junktown (somewhere to the south of Shady Sands) then you can recuit Dogmeat just by wearing leather armor.

And yes the player interface is not only objectively godawful but it also hates you. You'll get used to it eventually.

After Space Station 13, I didn't think a game interface could bother me ever again.

I changed some of Max's skills and traits to where his melee was doing 5-18 points of dmg, which was pretty sweet... before realizing that, at 4 INT, not only was I sacrificing skill points - thinking it's an older game and the curve wouldn't be so difficult - but all of his dialogue options become... simpler.

Which, I admit, is funny and kind of neat, and if I get through this playthrough, I might go back through and stick with that.

I'll go to explore Shady Sands again.

If you're going to play Fallout 1, be prepared to die alot. You can buy rope from the guard guy at the entrance of Shady Sands. Have high INT, it will serve you well and also be prepared to be frustrated by the random d20 system that doesn't work as well for video games as it does for tabletop games.

I've been trying to play Fallout 2, but the opening tutorial, I ain't go no clue what I'm doing.

[up] I guess by tutorial you mean the infamous Temple of Trials, or "Let's begin the game with That One Level". It will be horribly hard and boring, but the game drastically improves after that. Basically you will have to fight ants, fight ants, fight ants, fight radscorpions, try to heal yourself, and eventually fight a guy or convince him he does not have to if your speech is high enough (which usually means the previous fights have been even more gruelling than for combat-oriented characters, because those skill points must come from somewhere).
I think the restoration patch allows you to talk your way out of the whole temple if your speech is high enough, but I can't remember for sure.

Re: Fallout 1 (and 2 btw), it's best to avoid characters with AG, INT and CHA below 5 if it's your first game. You can try them later for a challenge. Avoid the pre-generated characters, and don't jump into fights, even with a combat-oriented character, since at lower levels this simply means you will kill rats a little faster but are still helpless against a pack of radscorpions (unless you are prepared for a very long sequence of hit and run, run, run).

No you idiot, stop using the Pre-Made Characters.

Yes, that's become quite apparent.

I got the rope, raised my INT to 7, talked Ian into joining - and he's killing everything for me, it feels drastically unfair, though I'm worried we're going to run low on Stimpaks and he's going to get wounded without my noticing. He has a tendency to lag behind, I'll be in a room and he'll wait 15 seconds before joining.

I went down two floors, murdered everything, and found a room with almost nothing of value. Irritated, I headed back to the Vault - holy crap I can go inside now - and tried to talk to the Overseer. He's not giving me any hints. I'll head to Junktown or The Hub next.

If you're going to play Fallout 1, be prepared to die alot

The death screens are rather amusing. The "atmosphere" is better; it sticks a lot more seeing that corpse as opposed to the ragdoll-ing that happens when you die in the later games.

Dying doesn't bother me so much, it's moving around without any direction, getting used to this isometric gameplay, trying to see those corners that are blotted by fog of war, trying to target enemies before they jump me, and trying to figure out what weapons can VATS.

But all that aside, switching weapons, moving, using skills, is still exhausting. Fortunately I fixed the resolution so I don't have to squint anymore.

Have high INT

Usually that's what you're "supposed" to do in Fallout, but I don't know, I'm used to having "useless" skills, but dumping points into INT feels wrong. For the sake of my frustration I'm sticking with 7 INT, but it bugs me.

it's best to avoid characters with AG, INT and CHA below 5 if it's your first game. You can try them later for a challenge. Avoid the pre-generated characters, and don't jump into fights, even with a combat-oriented character, since at lower levels this simply means you will kill rats a little faster

Since Fallout Shelter can now be played on the PC without installing an Android emulator, i been having blast playing it on PC.

Unfortunately, there's a bug in the game that resets your objectives when you start the game after closing.

Interesting.

I'd be interested too. Either A. they weren't important enough to nuke in the face. B. They had another Mr. House protection system batting away the nukes. or C. someone cared enough to rebuild the levees after the radiation died down. I mean, it didn't take a nuclear war to force people out of that city when Hurricane Katrina hit.

Can anybody explain why the culture of Fallout is stuck in the 50s? As in, it never changed from after World War II even with all the time that's passed. Could anyone explain that in as much detail as possible?

Mostly the idea that the 50s were that ideal "nice" time that everyone stuck to. That's my main assumption, the US had just become a superpower not to long after the 50s started and perhaps everyone wanted it to stay that way.
