On the one hand, Daphne is both a heroine and in position of a flipping laser sword. On the other hand, Draco in drag.

"In the name of light and reason, I will punish you!"

...alternatively, he really likes it.

(No, but really, he's the dark and mysterious love interest willing to do important but questionable things to keep those dear to him safe—after recovering from mind control, of course.)

And, because apparently my mind refuses to actually work with the conversation hereabouts, I just had the bestworst idea.

MoR Little Ponies: Reason is Magic.

...or would "Magic is Science" be better?

[up] I don't even watch the show (but I've been meaning to) and I think that would be epic.

I'll just leave this here.

Also, the general rationalist fanfics thread is that-a-way.

[up]No, see, while "magical ponies teach rationalism" would either be epic or cult-like, I mean specifically a My Little Pony, Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality cross. I'm random, but I do try and stay within the general outline of the thread, if not the conversation at hand. =)

Only if it took place in the setting of Erfworld, I think. As good as he is at bending the wargame-inspired rules of the world he's found himself in, Parson's never shown much ability or inclination to generalize that beyond wargames.

[up][up][up]And now I really want to read that.

You know, in the Luminosity thread I can always tell when Alicorn is writing because her website icon is her avatar, but here I always double-take when I see that that particular random comment was from Eliezer.

Clearly we need to make a suitably awesome logo/coat of arms such that he can't not use it.

before putting forth finished ideas let's think about what we'd want it to be like.

Probably something representing Mo R. Either that or the less wrong site. Though the less wrong wiki doesn't seem to have an icon like Alicorn's feather. (that wouldn't be us making it either.

A coat of arms can get very alethiometer-tastic very quickly; it's really more our kind of thing than yours. I say keep it simple and effective.

By the way, is there any explanation of how the heck Milicent managed to acquire a time turner? I just can't imagine that Quirrel would not have a time turner if Dumbledore's giving them out to random students.

I just can't imagine that Quirrel would not have a time turner if Dumbledore's giving them out to random students.

That's... a pretty good point. They are handed out by the ministry, though, not Dumbledore; McGonagall says in chapter 14 that they are only handed out to highly responsible students, and in the original canon she had to write a number of letters to the ministry vouching for Hermione's character and arguing that she wouldn't misuse it before she got one (it was implied to be a unique case, rather than the accepted if rare procedure it seems to be in Methods). And Quirrell mentions in chapter 49 that they are locked onto the use of a single person and cannot be stolen. Still, it's pretty hard to imagine Quirrell wouldn't find a way to get his hand such a powerful magical artifact by sneaking into the Department of Mysteries or by bribing an Unespeakable or something.

Wait, on a second thought, who says he doesn't have one? The reason he needed Harry's was because the time turner cannot transport more than one human. Harry isn't an animagus, so using Quirrell's turner wouldn't work.

I have trouble imaging Methods!McGonnagle vouching for Methods!Harry's character, especially at the beginning of the schoolyear.

P.S. Is there any sort of complete list for shoutouts and references? I just added The Wizard Of Oz to the page but it's still ridiculously incomplete.

Did he ever say that? It wasn't the case in the original canon.

It is a departure from Rowling's canon, but yes he did. Chapter 49 again:

The snake twitched its head, a snakish nod. "Many resstrictionss. Locked to your usse only, cannot be sstolen. Cannot transsport other humanss. But ssnake carried in pouch, I ssuspect will go with. Think posssible to hold hourglasss motionlesss within sshell, without dissturbing wardss, while you turn sshell around it. We will tesst in sseven dayss. Will not sspeak of planss beyond thiss. By the way, what was the Dresden Codak reference? Someone mentioned one early on but I missed it.

Also, what is the best collection of Author's Notes? There seem to be several but I don't know if one is easier to navigate or more complete than others.

Actually, some of us are slow and don't immediately recognize how allowing more than one person to use the same time-turner encourages paradoxes.

Point of grammar; chapter 67 "calvaria" is a feminine noun, so the form of the adjective modifying it should be "rava," unless magical incantations do violence to the elegant Latin noun-adjective agreement rules as well as the laws of physics.

It doesn't encourage paradoxes. It's just that the ability to take others back in time is way too powerful.
