Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

[up] That is a very awkward entry seems like it could use a rewrite, assuming he still counts.

Namely the reason I designated it as being Novel!Chris was because I had heard that the film gives him mitigating qualities. Hadn't watched the film myself to determine that, but for the most part, Chris's revision seems accurate.

What I'm getting from Thaddeus:

  • Watched London destroy a mining village (not seen the film so can't confirm if he was behind it)
  • Murdered his daughters mother
  • Scarred his daughters face
  • Released a "dangerous" criminal to chase the heroes
  • Intending to use MEDUSA to attack another settlement
  • Murders the mayor
  • Has his henchmen wipe out the control crew
  • Tries to crash London into the wall

I'd say he's good by heinousness. But would anyone oppose me attempting a rewrite?

Alright let's get this going...

Original

  • Thaddeus Valentine is the head of the Guild of Historians and the second-in-command to the mayor of London, Magnus Crome. Introduced observing the mobile city of London devouring a small mining town, it was revealed that prior to the main story, Thaddeus personally murdered the mother of the assassin - and his own daughter - Hester Shaw, and scarred Hester's face in order to gain an Old Technology for his own agenda. When one of the other Historians, Tom Nasworthy, found this out, Thaddeus released the dangerous criminal Shrike and sent him after Hester and Tom. It was revealed that he uses said Old Technology in order to activate a weapon known as MEDUSA that could destroy the Shield Wall that protected the static settlement known as Shan Guo so that he could make it his new hunting ground. When the mayor found out about Thaddeus's plans, Thaddeus murdered him in cold blood. When his plans of destroying the Shield Wall failed, he then orders his henchmen to execute London's control crew and plans to ram London into the wall. His own daughter Katherine called him out on how his only goal was to gain more power.

Rewrite

  • Thaddeus Valentine is the Deputy Lord Mayor of London who seeks the weapon MEDUSA for his own twisted ambitions. Prior to the story, Thaddeus murdered the mother of his daughter before scarring her face. To stop the heroes from interfering with his plans, Thaddeus unleashes the dangerous criminal Shrike to tail and dispose of them. Thaddeus' ultimate plan with MEDUSA is to use it's power to turn the settlement of Shan Guo into his hunting ground, later killing the mayor of London when he discovers his plans. With his plans of utilising MEDUSA rendered for naught, Thaddeus has the London control crew slaughtered and attempts to ram London into Shan Guo's wall, uncaring of the countless innocents that would be wiped out in the ensuing destruction.

Thoughts?

[down] Thanks. As for title change, I did a brief search and " Deputy Lord Mayor" was listed on Wikipedia in the cast section.

Fantastic, my one and only suggestion would be if he's got a title? I see "second-in-command" of London but is he a politician or some kind of military man? Other than that it's perfect, stellar job as usual Wet!

[tup]Donkey Zheng

[tup]Spencer

[tup]Titus H. Crockett— He comes from a self contained horror antology that is not in the superhero thing, so he isn't competing with Norman and other supervillain CEO s. Now, for the story itself, I think that his action of causing the death of hundreds of children is well enough to make him count, especially with the other previous villainy.

Seriously. Look at his actions. Causing his own brother to commit suicide and deliberately creates the circunstances that would cause a tragedy that kills children and then brags about it

Heck, its not even MARVEL comics, its ATLAS. Many of the CE Os of Marvel comics didn't even exist then because Marvel comics didn't even exist there.

I read the comic. Dude is nasty. The tragedy of the school is enough to make him pass the baseline standard handily and his sheer personal villainy just establishes him enough for me. He outright is glad of driving his own brother to suicide and then brags of ruining other lives.

For a short comic? Enough. Especially with the Wall of Text where he constantly gets characterization as a evil man whose greed is so massive that he gets sucked into a lethal Deal with the Devil

Its not negligence, he deliberately caused the situations that lead to the school collapse.

He changed the ingredients for the cement, something that he knew it would lead to a unstable building. The school collapsed, hundreds died and he bragged about it to the Devil.

Approve of the Thaddeues rewrite!

Aaaaand last one for this batch I think, from Sherlock, I've just refreshed on this fine gent...

Who is Dr. Frankland? What has he done?

The main antagonist of the episode "The Hounds of the Baskervilles", Dr. Bob Frankland was once a member of "H.O.U.N.D.", a covert government scientific operation working in part with the CIA to develop a new weapon for chemical warfare: a gas that could quickly, monstrously cause hallucinations and insanity-inducing fear into those who breathed in the gas. Frankland's team performed a bevy of human experiments that drove multiple people completely insane, leading them to either lifelong mental illness, suicide, or murdering their loved ones thanks to the illegal, inhumane testings Frankland and HOUND subjected them to for years.

Though HOUND was shut down after the countless amounts of death and destruction it caused, Frankland refused to give up his research and continued experimenting on people and animals with the chemical in secret after changing his name, hoping to perfect it as the ultimate battlefield weapon. When the man's experiments were uncovered by a coworker at the Baskerville Military Base in Dartmoor, Frankland tracked his coworker down, poisoned him and his young son Henry Knight with the chemical, and beat his coworker to death as Henry fled in hallucinatory terror, believing it to have been a monstrous dog that killed his father.

Years later still continuing his experiments in private as he got away with the murder, Frankland learns that a now-adult Henry is beginning to remember the truth of his father's death...and so Frankland begins dosing Henry with the chemical over the course of months, slowly driving him absolutely, agonizingly insane, every single day a waking nightmare of mental torment. Frankland pushes Henry to such madness that he attempts to murder one of his friends in a haze, before nearly killing himself...luckily, Sherlock Holmes intervenes just in time to stop the suicide and expose Frankland, and though Frankland attempts to flee from justice, in the ensuing chase he runs into a minefield testing area and is promptly blown to smithereens.

Mitigating features?

Nope, just a For Science! motive!

Heinousness?

The series has plenty nasty CMs in Moriarty, Magnussen, Culverton, etc...as well as two near-misses for CM in Lord Moran (who tries to bomb Parliament but has practically zero personality or dialogue) and Vivian Norbury (who orchestrated a botched hostage rescue that got multiple people killed and tortured, but has a one-off line that seemingly confirms she cared about her dead husband).

Frankland is a unique beast, with the least resources of any of the current Keeps. He was a major leader in HOUND in which a shitton of illegal and horrific experiments were performed that drove people insane and resulted in "permanent frontal lobe damage" to the few survivors, murders and suicides galore resulting from it. Then when he's nearly exposed, he sends Henry as a child and his father into terror with the gas and murders his dad, then later tries to drive Henry into madness and suicide to cover it up for good, all while implicitly continuing the HOUND experiments to create a chemical weapon. He's bad enough.

Final Verdict?

That's a yes after a long while of unsure-ness, but a rewatch slides him right in.
