Ok it was mentioned there is not a thread for Law Enforcement Officers (LEO for short)and other similar jobs for discussion.
This is for discussing the actual jobs, ranks, training, culture, relations to military bodies that exist, and any other variety of topics that can arise pertaining to the World of Policing.
I have seen a few mentions that various veterans think the Ferguson police are out of control and acting with excessive force often pointing out that even in a War Zone when patrolling cities they weren't as heavy handed or heavily equipped.
Who watches the watchmen?There's an early episode of Battlestar Galactica where Adama summed it up by stating that the military and the police have different missions. The military deals with the enemies of the state, while the police deal with the people of the state. In that case, he was explaining why you shouldn't use the military as a police force, but it also sums up nicely why police shouldn't act like a military force when still performing their role as police officers.
Basically what I am seeing out of Ferguson is this. Mostly like Gabe mentioned earlier very poorly trained officers coming out way too heavy. The department as a whole is looking like they have poor discipline across the board and would bet my left shoe it has issues with nepotism and rampant cronyism.
Things have started to calm down a lot since they local PD were told to S squared and a completely different approach was apparently taken for dealing with the crowds.
Who watches the watchmen?S Squared? Sit down and Shut up?
You got it chief.
Who watches the watchmen?Seven years in the Air Force has made me admirably capable at deciphering stuff like that, yet actual acronyms still completely confuse me. It doesn't help that nobody else using the acronyms in context seem to know what they mean either, making it just a word with no root origin.
My favorite acronym I've picked up is "FOCUS!", used by some Army reservists. Whenever one would get too smartassed, the other would point at him and say it. It sounded like he was saying "Hey, get back on task", but what he was actually saying was "Fuck Off Cause U Stupid."
BOHICA is also a rather handy one though.

"Psssh. Even if you could catch a miracle on a picture any person would probably delete it to make space for more porn." - AszurFriend of mine said that the police in Ferguson have started gassing people and remilitarizing again.
My google fu is weak and this seems unlikely, anyone have anything on this?
Oh really when?I can only find info for tear gas, and not for today or the last 24 hours either.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanFrom what I've found police got heavy handed again (showing up in armored trucks, pointing guns, and then using flash bombs; not sure if tear gas was used); police saying some protesters started throwing rocks at them. This set looters off, but protesters blocked stores they we're breaking into. Police started to response to looting but were apparently told to stand down by whoever was in charge at the time.

People are mirrors. If you smile, a smile will be reflected.From what I can see what seems to have happened is the trouble makers came out in force around midnight. Most of the protestors went home to sleep and looters came out in their place. Some protestors blocked stores from looters. Riot police were sent after the looters and small rioter groups.
Basically the opportunists came out to cause trouble and the police went after them and it carried on into the morning but doesn't seem to have lasted.

Who watches the watchmen?Marines have such honest humor.
"Psssh. Even if you could catch a miracle on a picture any person would probably delete it to make space for more porn." - AszurIt is military humor in general> We have some fun acronyms.
FUBAR=Fucked Up Beyond All Recognition
SNAFU=Situation Normal All Fucked UP
A personal favourite is FUBIJAR which Fuck U Buddy I'm Just a Reservist.
Mrs Tuefel found a fun book full of historical and current acronyms and military slang. I will share with you guys after I get home. It is fairly amusing.
The police have to have a few of those I am sure there is direct overlap.

Who watches the watchmen?Indonesian National Police officers found an abandoned suitcase in Bali with the stuffed corpse of an American tourist. The FBI has sent agents to Jakarta to help the INP find out how it happened.

"Exit muna si Polgas. Ang kailangan dito ay si Dobermaxx!"Her daughter and her boyfriend killed her.
They found the body when they asked for a cab and never showed. They were arrested in another hotel just down the road.
CCTV cameras caught the mom and bf arguing. They're not going anywhere anytime soon.
"Psssh. Even if you could catch a miracle on a picture any person would probably delete it to make space for more porn." - AszurLooks like Bali's going have another red mark on it.
"Exit muna si Polgas. Ang kailangan dito ay si Dobermaxx!"I wouldn't blame a country for the actions of a fucking asshole and her douchebag boyfriend.
A lot of horrible things happen in beautiful countries.
These weren't native people. These were tourists who brought their drama.
"Psssh. Even if you could catch a miracle on a picture any person would probably delete it to make space for more porn." - AszurThat isn't all that bad of a curfew at all.
Who watches the watchmen?Hell, there's a stricter curfew than that for US military personnel in Japan who are off base alone.
The real test will probably be how curfew enforcement is done, if it's simply people having to account for being out at such times that will be fine, but if the police operate a "shoot first ask questions never" approache (even if it's non-lethal shooting) everything is gonna go to shit.
"And the Bunny nails it!" ~ Gabrael "If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we." ~ Cyran
IIRC, wasn't that because of personnel who are involved in criminal cases by Japanese police forces?
"Exit muna si Polgas. Ang kailangan dito ay si Dobermaxx!"Yeah, but I've always said the correct solution to that should have been to very publicly punish the people in question, rather than quietly deal with them then publicly punish everyone who had nothing to do with it. Sadly, Guilt by Association is a longstanding tradition in the military.
Even the Army's Crowd Control Manual Says Ferguson Police Tactics Are Dumb.
