The Law Enforcement Officer Thread

Go To

Ok it was mentioned there is not a thread for Law Enforcement Officers (LEO for short)and other similar jobs for discussion.

This is for discussing the actual jobs, ranks, training, culture, relations to military bodies that exist, and any other variety of topics that can arise pertaining to the World of Policing.

I hope they pursue legal action. Nothing will change unless they are taken to task.

It says in the article that the nurse only intends to take it to court if the police department doesn't follow through on acknowledging the error and disciplining the officer themselves. The media attention and public pressure may be enough or it may not.

She needs to take it to court immediately. The department is probably gonna sweep this under the rug as soon as it leaves public consciousness. You can't trust them to self regulate.

Every time "X retires before facing disciplinary action" crosses the headlines, it just serves as a stark reminder of just how old a lot of these people are.

Just remember this: stuff is reported in the news because it's unusual. Headlines such as: "Water is Wet, the Sky is Blue, and Elvis is Still Dead" is not the sort of news that gets ratings or sells newspapers.

In my experience, cops are just doing their jobs. They don't routinely murder minorities in cold blood where I live. (Way over in South Philadelphia, maybe...)

But then, I probably have vastly different life experiences than you. Please don't project your bias and hatred, it's not conducive to a debate in good faith.

Ive live in Baltimore nearly my whole life, although I live in a much more affluent community now, because my mom worked very hard.

Whenever I see any police officer no matter where it is, my immediate uncontrollable reaction is a mix of fear and absolute disgust.

You're right, I apologize for framing my experiences as the end all-be all.

But, every single officer that is NOT calling out the problems with its entire institution is NOT "just doing their job". They are a complicit criminal.

The police are a gang.

Well, I'm a forty-something white male from rural Pennsylvania. Out here, the biggest problem the police have to deal with is drunk drivers. (Although drugs are a significant issue, as well.)

I'm sorry you feel that way towards the police, but you're a product of your early life experiences, just as I am a product of my own. It's hard to rise above such influences.

Still, it's tiresome to hear you repeatedly interject with the hyperbole that ALL cops everywhere are ALL racist, murdering assholes. I simply don't believe that's true.

You won't find a single place anywhere on this page where I said "all cops are racist murdering assholes". I know the desire to defend pigs is very high atm, but at least read what I'm saying.

I did say a few things.

1. Cops being racist murdering assholes is not unusual.

2. Every single cop that does not call out their own institution is complicit.

3. The police are a gang.

These are all true statements.

Well, the latter is iffy. And the first is conditional to time and place.

A group many members strong, across wide distances, but with specific territory, joined under a specific creed, all wearing the same color, wielding weapons and committing crimes, using specific symbols, slang and slogans, often born into the lifestyle through family and community, terrorizing their neighborhoods and making many people feel unsafe and fear for their lives, while protecting each other with a "blue wall", rewarding loyalty and shunning or attacking anyone, including those in the group, who do not come to the defense of the group.

Sounds like a gang to me.

The thing is, the police isn't so much a unified gang as it is thousands of loosely connected ones. Heck, they don't even always get along — hence jurisdiction conflicts.

That's probably why if, for example, the NYPD fucks up, other police departments don't always rush to call them out. They just go "Heh, that's the NYPD for you. At least we're good cops."

Now if you have individual cops fucking up and the rest of the cops in their department backing them up? Then you've got a case for calling that department gang-like.

Disgusted, but not surprised

I mean, they do other stuff too. The ultimate goal shouldn't be to tear down the protections that the police provide, but to reform them in such a way that those protections are provided to everyone and not just the majority class.

The goal of equality should not be that everyone is oppressed equally, but to spread the privileges that the majority takes for granted so that all may enjoy them. Being able to call the police and have them resolve an emergency without shooting your husband in the face is one of those privileges.

@Saturn: By that definition, I guess any government agency with power to arrest those who oppose them is a gang then. I'm sorry that you feel terrified by the police, but their job is not to engage in criminal behaviour like you are suggesting, but to prevent it and they do do it, most of the time.

Still, you are so dead-set on opposing the "pigs" that you would prefer that armed militias protect the citizens, when they would probably just clash with one another and bring chaos to the vacuum left with no agency to properly enforce the law.

Life is unfair...

Wait... that Payne clown was willing to try throwing a reservist from another department under the bus after he'd just been hit by a speeder? Just to cover his own squad's arses?

Why is any unionized officer from a department that is not his supporting this Bozo, the Prince of Douche? Because it's as clear as day he'd try it with any of them, too.
