"NOTE: This isn't an actual Rec thread, this is for an idea for a possible Rec thread. That's if the idea doesn't get shot down."

So, after reading several fora and websites giving out tons of recommendations for various media and whatnot, I was thinking to myself 'How would it if TV tropes did something here like that aswell?'. That was going to be the basic idea until I saw that there have been quite a couple of threads on this. So I'd decided to give a little twist to mine.

To help with this plan, I've implemented a traffic light system style recommendation list. How it goes would be like this:

  • Green ranked stuff would be, obviously, what we'd recommend to people here on the Forums. They'd be not just things we like, but things that are critically well-recieved and such. Anything that goes here, though, would go into one of the three levels depending on how accessable it is. (sorry if this gets confusing)
    • Level 1: This would be for Gateway Series type media
    • Level 2: This level is for people who have some idea of whatever medium/genre, but not enough to know what to follow up on.
    • Level 3: This would be more suitable for people who already know the medium/genre and want to try something new.
  • Yellow ranked stuff would be for the meh to ''extremely''divisive stuff. Stuff that ends up here would be something we wouldn't recommend, but you might as well have a look.
  • Red ranked stuff, as you might have guessed, would be for the generally horrible stuff and stuff we love to hate, you know, something you'd rather avoid (even though we're already idiots for telling you it exist, which means...). If the general reception to this is 'This Sucks' you know where to put it.

The limit for each voter would be 15 choices for each colour (And not levels, in the case of green-ranked stuff) and for any work to get onto the list, they would need to require at least 5 recommendations in one colour. Now In the event any work has a Green/Red percentage share of 45%/55% or narrower, said work would be automatically placed in yellow; So if your favourite thing is somewhat doomed for the chop or the thing or idiots are giving some hope to that show you really hate, you might as well hope for more votes. Speaking of which, it is possible for works to change colour if said colour gets more votes than the other two.

Now if there's any revisions needed, i'll gladly change the rules for it to work. This is a draft idea (and a pretty shit one at it, too), so adding and taking away some things might help in the long term.

Thanks to #yackfest, I've decided to split yellow into two levels.

  • Level 1 would be for works you know is rubbish, but you like watching/reading/playing/ it anyway
  • Level 2, on the other hand, would be for what was originally going to be yellow in the first place.

Looks interesting. Let's see if I get this straight, using anime examples:

Well, thanks for the example, silver2195. I've already made a thread testing this out in the literature thread.

The music one got a decent list out but was quite a bit of work. This would need to be planned long term and have active community participation to work out properly.

I wasn't going to try music, I already knew that was done anyway.
