I didn't apply to UW because their shitty app form wouldn't let me go undeclared. >:|
[1] This facsimile operated in part by synAC.As an aside from the main conversation, I do hope that it's as easy as you say, since I've decided that I'd much rather major in anthropology in pursuit of becoming an archaeologist than in English, as I'm currently signed up to do.
Also, Kris, may you consider UT? Sorry, I couldn't help myself. Seriously, though, if you can get in, it's a great school, and Austin is not at all like the rest of Texas.
"I can't imagine what Hell will have in store, but I know when I'm there, I won't wander anymore."William: Sorry. xD
Mellon: Eh, I guess. Also, picked up Washington University in St. Louis. Looks okay. I'll keep it in mind. I guess I'll try to find something I'm interested in and if not, just go as Undecided.
Lucky: I'll keep it in mind. :P Texas is not on my list of states I want to live in, though.

“Isn't it enough to see that a garden is beautiful without having to believe that there are fairies at the bottom of it too?”...I love history, but I don't want to be a teacher, and that's about the only thing you can do with it. Besides that, I don't know. :/
Keep going - you'll start to figure it out. It just takes a lot of thinking over a long period of time.
It might help if you had someone to meet with every week or so to talk about stuff with, so that you don't get distracted and suddenly graduate and still have no clue what to do. I've been doing that with my therapist, and having to have something to talk with him about every week forces me to keep thinking about it.
And even then, a lot of colleges have a year or two to declare what you want to major in, so the sky won't suddenly fall if you don't have the exact thing you want to major in when you start attending. Its just a matter of paying it some mind every once in a while so that you're not just being carried along by the currents and suddenly wake up with a degree in animal husbandry with no idea how you got there.
Nemo enim fere saltat sobrius, nisi forte insanit Deviantart.Well, that's perfectly understandable, but seriously, Austin is a very liberal city. If you ever get a chance to visit, I suggest you take it...and then maybe you can take a tour around the UT campus...
"I can't imagine what Hell will have in store, but I know when I'm there, I won't wander anymore."Why is it that every college keeps their tuition cost hidden away? I just want to see how much you're going to charge me, damn it! D:
“Isn't it enough to see that a garden is beautiful without having to believe that there are fairies at the bottom of it too?”I used College Board's site to figure out how much each college would cost me.
SHIKI is dead.Well, if you do an extensive enough search, you'll find it. Also, keep in mind that things like scholarships, loans, grants, and FAFSA all exist to get you money to go to college. Also keep in mind that you're almost certainly going to have some debt when you finish college. Things like subsidised loans will help you out. Also, make sure the interest rates on the loans is either lower than or about the same as the natural rate of inflation.

"I can't imagine what Hell will have in store, but I know when I'm there, I won't wander anymore."Thanks, William. I'll remember that.
Also, looked up the college I thought looked nice. It's expensive. My mother is discouraging, as she always is every time I say I want to go not-KU. Ugh, I hate this. :/
“Isn't it enough to see that a garden is beautiful without having to believe that there are fairies at the bottom of it too?”Kris, may I show you to my above post?
"I can't imagine what Hell will have in store, but I know when I'm there, I won't wander anymore."Fine. How expensive is considered average for college? Per year, I mean.
“Isn't it enough to see that a garden is beautiful without having to believe that there are fairies at the bottom of it too?”From memory, public colleges are about $15,000-$20,000 a year, private ones are about $40,000-$50,000 a year, and community colleges are about… hmm, fuzzy on that one. Cheaper than public colleges, probably, especially if you stay at home while attending.
That information is probably outdated or wrong, but that's the general idea.
EDIT: This is probably way more accurate.

Nemo enim fere saltat sobrius, nisi forte insanit Deviantart.Yeah, take Dec's numbers and add about five thousand. Community colleges do tend to run much cheaper, though.
"I can't imagine what Hell will have in store, but I know when I'm there, I won't wander anymore."i know you guys already moved on from the subject, but i wanted to put my thoughts about what declaring majors.
it might sound counter intuitive, but you can major in anything you want in undergraduate study and it still won't affect you much. it's not like it's going to pigeon hole you into one career path and that you can't ever find a career outside that field. it's study at the graduate level that will affect you.
and just fyi, its true history doesn't have that many set career-paths(but besides teacher, jobs include stuff at museums like curator and archivists), but it's still a very useful subject. you become very well-rounded and gain lots of knowledge about cultures and trends. and you get really good at writing(i double in history and comm btw). these "general skills" that you learn is what employers actually look for when they hire people. they just care that you have a degree in the first place...
*cries*
SHIKI is dead.aww that's okay! math is useful, too — it's basically used for.. well, EVERYTHING! also math = analytical and problem solving skills!
hm, this is odd, for once i'm not defending the "practicality" of the humanities.
i am utterly horrible at math, by the by. but i think all subjects are valuable.
I'm planning on heading to Purdue this fall. Got the housing stuff and all that out of the way. The only thing I'm waiting on is word for if I've received any of the zillions of local scholarships I've applied for. And for some reason my mom's trying to convince me that Purdue will be evil and my soul will be eaten and I should go to a teeny tiny college instead.
Anyone else here attending/going to Purdue?
"Teebs is a total grump, but he's usually right." - NLK^ Haha, yeah my mom tried persuading me which college i should attend, too. she even BRIBED me with money!
Question!
If one submits a FAFSA application, when should they expect a response back?
Because I'm starting to worry, just a little bit, here...
Generally at the time things come due for the particular school.
I filed my FAFSA several times over the last 5 years in February/March and didn't get a financial aid award letter til August. (Financial aid award letter meaning available funds given by Stafford loans and/or actual financial aid grants.)
If you filled it out fine, you'll be fine. Trust me.
Ugh...
The very thought of college in a week makes my brain start to melt. Everyone's been telling me not to be anxious about it, but it hasn't helped too much. I had been half-hoping I'd be dead before I'd need to even enroll. ;/ So I'm disappointed and stressed crazy now.
My second semester in college is coming to an end in a couple weeks. So far, it's pretty awesome. It's certainly a lot better than high school was, so say the least.
Experience has taught me to investigate anything that glows. It is fucking hard to get a job at my college. Or anywhere in Michigan, really, but here especially.
I'm still curious as to whether they'll let me into my Japanese classes next year; prerequisite class is JPN 215, which I pretty much failed, but they haven't dropped me from those classes yet. :/
月を見るたび思い出せ
I hear that's a myth, that you should declare when applying. But even if you do declare, most colleges let you change it easily anyway.
