Because Kinkajou told me to.

So yeah, anything about Final Fantasy! I guess this would make a good starting point: Which are your favorite games in the series and why?

My two all-time favorites are tied between Final Fantasy V and Final Fantasy IX. They're both very fun games that don't take themselves too seriously while still being legitimately emotional. On top of that, Zidane is my favorite Final Fantasy lead in the entire series. He's light-hearted, fun, and a generally nice guy to be around. FFV also has the advantage of having one of, if not the best, Job System in an FF game. Both FFV and FFIX make characters customizable while keeping them all unique in their own way. I'm also very fond of Final Fantasy I; it hasn't aged well, but it's classic, and like FFV, I played it tons as a kid.

I assume we'll drift around to various other FF-related discussions as the topic grows, right?

Actually, my first playthrough, I had to suck it up and deal with Zombie status because I never made a habit of carrying Holy Waters.

.... Come to think of it, I still don't.

Has anyone downloaded Final Fantasy VII from Steam, played it for a bit, then got the message "An unknown exception has occurred", then the whole thing closes? It happened to me while I was a leaving a screen in the Midgar subway, just before going to blow up that second mako reactor. I tried looking for the answer online, but it seems no one knows what causes it or how to fix it.

Please let this be a rumor. Please!

I'd say it sounds like a bad fanfic idea, but I bet most of the writers in that fandom could come up with a better premise. Square, are you even trying?

Wait, huh?

I don't think there can be a "newly-awoken Sin". That sounds about as possible as a newly-awoken Kefka.

[up] It doesn't make any sense at all, does it? That's why it's so infuriating!

It hasn't been confirmed or anything, so hopefully it stays that way.

How the hell does that work?

Sin is, for all intents and purposes, basically an Aeon, summoned by Yu Yevon. Who is not only dead, but still-Summoning corpse was beat to complete and utter hell by Tidus and associates.

Furthermore, the other Fayth needed to summon the regular Aeons, as well as the Fayth at Mount Gagazet used for maintaining Dream Zanarkand; as far as I can recall, all of these Fayth are inactive/unusable.

... although if it does become an actual game, I'd probably try to get my hands on it anyway if it stays closer to X-1's Sphere Grid and CTB system.

So apparently both those plot elements are in the audio drama. Don't have confirmation on this, but it looks like this might be legit.

I'm sorry, but X-3 would be a terrible idea. X-2 wrapped up the story nicely and there's no reason for sequels to happen just for the sake of milking Spira even more. Have they learnt nothing from trying to milk XIII and how much that pissed people off?

Despite the most common vocal reaction to the XIII trilogy, haven't they all sold well enough that SE still profited off of it? Isn't that why SE made it into a trilogy in the first place?

I mean, I really don't know how the Japanese themselves reacted to the trilogy anyway, but if the games sold well enough that SE thought it was profitable, and they believe that most of their current successes with the Final Fantasy series are coming from things like the Final Fantasy VII Compilation and the XIII trilogy, then I can understand why they'd feel that bringing back X, assuming it was very popular in the first place, would work in their favor.

Am I in the minority, being disappointed that Final Fantasy 15 is going to be an action game, instead having turn-based combat?

I'd rather they do something like, say, a VI prequel set in either the War of the Magi, or the War of the Triad. Or even the 18 years following Terra's birth, so we could see the world before the Empire got powerful.

Or a V prequel featuring the Warriors of Dawn.

Or another Tactics A game.

Or an MMO set in Ivalice.

I could've sworn that public reception to the XIII sequels was very positive...

Part of me wants SE to acknowledge IX more. Part of me knows that the game didn't leave much room for a continuation.

The tvtropes wiki page for Bravely Default says it "may be a Final Fantasy game". Is that true?

I do remember when XIII-2 came out a lot of people were saying it was better than the first game.

And Caius is certainly more popular than Barthandalus. Although Bart at least is a bit more unique and interesting because his whole race really got a raw deal. At first they are typical evil gods and who doesn't want PHENOMENAL COSMIC POWERS but in the end you learn what a shitty existence they lead.

About Bravely Default: I have played demo and as far as I'm concerned, it is a FF spin-off. Battle system feels like upgraded FFV plus some KH thrown in.

LR has gotten some complaints over its technical aspects (apparently the framerate drops and is quite inferior to its prequels onb that level).

And I have no idea where this X-3 could be going, because it sounds completely bogus. I mean, making a brand new FFX wouldn't be cheap, unless they reuse the assets of the remaster. Which would be bullshit for a brand new game of this generation, because the remastered graphics are not indicative of a ten year progression.

The original game sold well because it was a Final Fantasy title, which at the time still had a (somewhat?) good rep (despite what "Square just shot themselves in the foot" would imply). The sequel "sold well" in that it ended up a profit, but numbers-wise, it is lackluster.

I could've sworn that public reception to the XIII sequels was very positive...

Positive at the start perhaps, but not so positive once the games are released. And of course, it suffers the usual broken base.

Bravely Default takes elements (like certain jobs as well as the job system for starters) from Final Fantasy, but is otherwise it's own thing. I wouldn't label it a Final Fantasy spinoff.

I didn't like XIII-2, but that was mostly because the whole time map thing confused me on where I should go. It was pretty hard to figure out where I was actually supposed to be going.

Well, that was odd.

Basically, the kids narrating the video serve under Baralai, who is now head of the comittee that runs Spira, or something. New Yevon was disbanded. Baralai has sent them to give Yuna a sphere because he needs her help. On their way to Besaid, they meet Tidus and notice he's very tired even though he tries to hide it before the crowd.

When they get to the village, they meet Lulu (who is now mayor) and Wakka. After a bit of bickering, Wakka takes then to the inner sanctum where Yuna is praying. The girl wonders why the hell she's praying when there's no Fayth. Apparently, there's a new...belief system? called "Yevoner" which people who are having trouble adjusting to the times follow. When the kids meet Yuna and hand her the sphere, it seems there's something wrong with the Moonflow and the Schoopuffs (apparently they all went extinct after Sin's disaster, but the sphere shows two schoopuffs when there's only supposed to be one left). Yuna goes to chat with Wakka and Lu in private, and the boy wonders why the girl didn't ask about her father, who is supposed to be Auron. Lulu overhears and says Auron isn't the kind of guy who would never tell them if he had a child, so she doesn't think it's true.

Anyway, they decide to go to Bevelle, but first visit the Moonflow. The place has now turned into the Farplane, where Unsent are reuniting with the living. Yuna is hesitant to perform a sending, which is noted in the narrative, so they just move on to Bevelle and HOLY SHIT, Sin is alive and everyone's freaking out. They get to safety and then overhear a convo between Tidus and Yuna, where Yuna says she's in love with someone Tidus doesn't know. The boy (the narrator's friend) also says he's in love with someone else, so they slpit up. Not sure what this was about. The girl runs back to Besaid and overhears Tidus inquiring Lulu about Yuna's new love, but all Lulu says is "you should know Yuna better by now". Basically, the implication is she doesn't want to get him involved. Narrator girl and Tidus head to Luca (or Bevelle?) where Yuna is, because Tidus "promised to always be with her" and stumble onto Yuna's public speech.

"I will defeat Sin. I must defeat Sin."

And that's all. I wonder if the two sketches at the end of the video are concept art of Yuna and Tidus for X-3.

After reading people's reactions, I'm glad that a). I haven't played X yet, and b). SE hasn't touched XII (yet).

[up] XII was a newer entry into a pre-existing sub-franchise thing anyway. It has Tactics, Tactics Advance, Tactics A2, Vagrant Story and Revenant Wings. The Ivalice Alliance. It worked better than the others because it was designed to flesh out a distinct world as what I thought was intended to be a legendarium of sorts instead of being one consistent plot. The games don't fit together very well anyway.

Can we not talk about the audio drama until the international release? Not all of us are talented enough to understand Japanese and would rather wait.
