Because Kinkajou told me to.

So yeah, anything about Final Fantasy! I guess this would make a good starting point: Which are your favorite games in the series and why?

My two all-time favorites are tied between Final Fantasy V and Final Fantasy IX. They're both very fun games that don't take themselves too seriously while still being legitimately emotional. On top of that, Zidane is my favorite Final Fantasy lead in the entire series. He's light-hearted, fun, and a generally nice guy to be around. FFV also has the advantage of having one of, if not the best, Job System in an FF game. Both FFV and FFIX make characters customizable while keeping them all unique in their own way. I'm also very fond of Final Fantasy I; it hasn't aged well, but it's classic, and like FFV, I played it tons as a kid.

I assume we'll drift around to various other FF-related discussions as the topic grows, right?

Iris has a personality at least. More than I can say about Luna.

XV's cast is so weird

Igniz is all stoic and tough one second and than striking dudebro poses and shit whenever you tag with him. Characterization is so all over the place

Information about what Versus was gonna be about.

Also sheds light on how troubled the production was.

Probably better to post in the XV thread. Quite a lot there are spoilers for the game.

So I ran across an old Reddit post that states, among other things, that in the original Japanese version of FFVII, Sephiroth was Jenova's puppet, while in in the English version it was the other way around, possibly due to a translation error. I had literally never heard this before; I'd always heard it told Sephiroth was in control in both versions, but people seemed to believe the post. Any truth to this? It's very big if true. Link.

No, the only difference is that the term should be used for Sephiroth Clones should be Sephiroth Copies like Genesis and Angeal's copies.

The concept of the Reunion is the same both sides of the pacific as is Sephiroth being the dominant force drawing on the (Deceased) Jenova's power. That being said Sephiroth is still a loony and treats Jenova as his mother and a being to be revered even if Lucretzia is his birth mother.

Ya know, having played some of Persona 2 Innocent Sin, and knowing Square is way bigger than Atlus, I wonder why they never had voice-acting in a PS 1 FF. I figured it was always technological limitation but of course there were several fully voiced PS 1 games. It's just that the ones I can think of were Action games or Platformers and thus much less demanding than an RPG.

I mean, P2 didn't have full voicework but there's tons of it in combat and they could have easily done this with FFVIIII or IX if they wanted.

I think it was a matter of different priorities. Square focused on their fancy FMV scenes, which took up budget and disk space. I'm not familiar with Persona 2, although I am aware of other RPG's from that time that had voice in battles: Star Ocean 2 and Lunar. Both of these games had FM Vs as well, although obviously low budget and very few and far-between. It wasn't until the Playstation 2 that developers could just say, "why not have the best of both?"

Well, PS 1 F Fs were already 4 discs long. FM Vs and the world map took a lot of space. I can see why they wouldn't want to cram more things in. Hell, I think FFVIII's final disc is just the final sequence of Ulti's castle. It does indeed have the entire world map, but all of the towns and gardens are cut off.

By comparison, SO 2 was only 2 discs long despite extensive battle voice acting and two sizable world map planets.

In The Novels

XIII's which is more like a where are they now epilogue Serah and Snow have Broken up to give each other time to think. before they try tieing the knot

The X Novel is basically set up to be a X-3 prolouge The Tidus thing is... basically Tidus is on an "unexplored" island sees a round ball shaped object which turns out to be mine but thinks is a blitzball and well Tidus dies in a manner benefiting Parody Tidus

Don't worry Yuna revives Tidus... but The Tidus she gets back is more like a weird mix of Jecht Shuyin and Tidus instead of FFX Tidus we know

Apparently there doing this as a sequel hook for X-3. At least from what I heard.

Though damn its fucked up man, why can't they let people be happy except for the guy shagging his dead-brothers lover.

There is a general belief that stable couples can't be entertaining, which is why characters always get together near or at the end.

Of course its nonsense. But the last time we got one in the series was Cecil and Rosa and they where just so very vanilla.

It's pretty unlikely they'll actually make X-3 after the backlash they got from Japanese fans over X-2.5 and audio drama.

Especially in works aimed at teenagers and otaku, the latter of which aren't expected to be able to relate to a realistic relationship.

I would argue that a stable and healthy relationship isn't necessarily going to be as interesting or entertaining as one with problems because while there may be conflict it isn't going to be as pronounced. It's probably why that sort of relationship if present is going to be in a slice-of-life story, or relegated to side characters and not the main couple.

Thing is, media aimed at otaku and teenagers is hesitant to show any kind of relationship, flawed or otherwise. Characters always get together at the end, bypassing showing the actual relationship and any problems those characters might have together.

Besides Hashil's point about the demographics being unable to relate, it's also worth pointing out that something like an interesting but destructive or dysfunctional relationship is not exactly conducive to the escapism that a lot of that media is aimed towards. It's too realistic.

Like could you imagine an FF game where the MC hooks up with a love interest like halfway into the game, and they have a torrid but destructive relationship throughout and end up breaking up by the end? Would be a total buzzkil and way too real for the otaku crowd.
