Because Kinkajou told me to.

So yeah, anything about Final Fantasy! I guess this would make a good starting point: Which are your favorite games in the series and why?

My two all-time favorites are tied between Final Fantasy V and Final Fantasy IX. They're both very fun games that don't take themselves too seriously while still being legitimately emotional. On top of that, Zidane is my favorite Final Fantasy lead in the entire series. He's light-hearted, fun, and a generally nice guy to be around. FFV also has the advantage of having one of, if not the best, Job System in an FF game. Both FFV and FFIX make characters customizable while keeping them all unique in their own way. I'm also very fond of Final Fantasy I; it hasn't aged well, but it's classic, and like FFV, I played it tons as a kid.

I assume we'll drift around to various other FF-related discussions as the topic grows, right?

I'm just glad that we can get work on Kingdom Hearts III faster. And maybe we can get TWEWY 2 after that?

I'd be hyped as hell for an FFVIII follow-up, but I know it'll never happen in a million yrs.

So, FFXV got a gameplay trailer...It looks really good. May be the first FF game that I play, even better because it'll be released on the Xbox.

What. You've never played an FF game before?

You need to fix that, son.

II and IV-VI have GBA versions, III and IV also have DS versions.

@lu 127: Type-0 HD will let me play the game without importing a PSP and video game at high cost. That's the only improvement I need.

The Final Fantasy XIII trilogy is headed to Steam

I'm liking that Square and Steam have been so buddy-buddy lately, could we possibly be getting all the FF's on Steam too in the future?

[up][up] ...I don't know why you'd need to import a PSP, unless you don't already have one. And even then, you wouldn't need to import it, only buy a local one. You only need the game, which goes for as little as 17 dollars for the physical version, or 20 for the digital one. Much cheaper than the HD version. Certainly not high cost.

II and IV-VI have GBA versions, III and IV also have DS versions.

You can go on any forum and find people who are annoyed with how "overhyped" VII is, but I notice that when VII is getting put down as So Okay, It's Average, FF's III to VI are get brought up as the series' beard-growing titles that helped define the nature of role-playing games. Having never played them, I can only feel somewhat scandalized. "VII isn't as good as everyone says it was, but III-VI were amazing and had better storylines!"

I know one of the earlier games received a sequel for the DS called "After Years" or something like that. 1-6 have all had ports and remakes. FFXIII had two sequels that underwent massive Genre Shift's, while FFXIV just spits in the face of FFXI, and X got X-2 and even an "X-3" novel. Tactics got a ported remake, and a spin-off, and a sequel to that spin-off.

You don't see nearly as much discontent for those as Dirge of Cerberus, Crisis Core, Advent Children, or that crappy, cellphone game spin-off about the Turks. It boggles me that VII is the Acceptable Target when there are apparently three other titles that rank as "best game ever made, or ever will be made"; and when several of the games have received multiple iterations.

That said, I do plan to eventually collect them all. Which would be easier if Square made a huge collection and put it on PSN or XBL or Steam or whatever.

Why is it that franchises like these, this and Disgaea, can't release a "grand collection" for like 40-80 bucks? We've got three KH games put in a collection, three God of Wars, three Metal Gears, Jak and Daxter, Sly Cooper, etc - all for the price of a regular game. But RPG's like Final Fantasy rarely seem to get their own collections.

There's Final Fantasy Anthology, sure, with 1 and 2. It's not like the old games were that huge or advanced, why not put 1-3 on 1 disc, 4-6 on another, 7-9 on another? Do a "Disney vault" kind of thing?

Games like Atlier, Disgaea, dotHack, and Neptunia - they don't even get collections. You just have to suck it up and spend 80-100 bucks buying collector copies on Amazon.

I had a lot of fun with Dirge of Cerberus, actually. I hate Crisis Core, though.

Final Fantasy IV had, like, a bagillion ports and remakes from Square-Enix. Whenever someone says that FFVII is uniquely favored by Squenix, I just point that out.

I like IV and all, but it's pretty dated by today's standards.

so idk, maybe you can get away with saying that about vi, but vii probably has much better and more in-depth characterization and more interesting plot elements than iv given everything i know about it.

So, FFXV got a gameplay trailer...It looks really good. May be the first FF game that I play, even better because it'll be released on the Xbox.

every installment up until x is pretty emulatable even with a subpar pc. you could just play one now, if you like.

I don't hate FFIV, but I don't like how you're not able to customize your characters (or such customization is irreversible, in the DS version), which was already possible in the previous two games. By now, it feels like an integral part of Final Fantasy's gameplay.

my gripes with iv are moreso that its plot and characters have a lot of potential, but the game's presentation and writing are so dated that it just comes off as bland and umimpressive. it's fun to play still and appreciable as an older game, but it's not amazing by any means.

it has one of the better soundtracks in the series though. the vocal version of the love theme from the ds version is one of my favorite songs in any jrpg.

My problem with IV is that it isn't as interesting/fun as others JRP Gs of its time. For that matter, I find II and III more enjoyable.

I personally consider V and VI to be when the series was really finding its voice, but that's just me.

I will say that, if someone plays IV, the DS version is easily the best of them, being both a more interesting game by virtue of added challenge and featuring a slightly more competent story- It's still pretty bare-bones, but events flow into each other much more smoothly.

I have a soft spot for IV just because it was one of the first RPGs I played. Sure, the plot is nothing special, nor the gameplay, but even now, I still like the characters.

XIII trilogy coming to PC? That's pretty big news, even though I've heard mixed-to-negative things about the trilogy as a whole.

I feel you- Cecil is still one of my favorite ff protags; kinda wish we'd get a dark knight protagonist again, and have it be a legitimate class rather than be inferior to the eventual job change.

[up][up]From my experiance, most of the negativity towards XIII is just internet whine. Most people I've talked to IRL, while critical of the legitimate flaws (straight line for 50 hours, ignoring/minimizing the first game's cast except for Lightning and Hope, etc.), were all neutral-to-favorable of the trilogy. Of course, thats just the opinions of my social bubble, and I do live in a somewhat isolated community, so...

Basically, fuck what other people think of any game, good or bad. The only opinion that actually matters is your own.

Pretty much [down]. Anyone who thinks they are actually bad, not just flawed, is blessed to have not played a truly bad game.

The XIII trilogy, while not truly bad games, are pretty heavily flawed. I'd say they handily took the title of "most flawed FF" from VIII, at least for me.
