Is it possible to sign up without having discord?

You would basically be unable to directly coordinate with people during events and before them.

So I don't think it would really be possible to do this without Discord.

  • Name: Zoss Panopola
  • Age: 15
  • Clan and Background: House Panopola: The history of this once-prestigious house is long and somewhat tragic. Founded by an adventuring alchemist, who arranged for the construction of the city of Pansom above the legendary Midsummer Wellspring, long-believed to be a gateway to the realms of the Fae.

  • From the gardens that sprung up around the Wellspring, Panopola has long produced high-quality alchemical concoctions. Their specialty has always been Transmutation magic, specifically that which is used to Fabricate and Replicate - materials converted into other materials, raw goods into refined goods, broken items repaired with only minimal investment. Naturally they capitalized on it, and used the resultant money to fund scientific and engineering research, hoping to find additional uses for their Fabrication expertise - they were in fact one of the original founders of the Academy at Phoebenon, and were a serious rival of Houses Libero and Asclepia - Libero especially, due to opposing their staunch protectionist attitude towards their artifice.

  • But somewhere along the line, something happened. The House was struck by a string of misfortunes. Its highest members caught up in scandals, private sayings and disputes outed to the public. Their products began to fail or not work as advertised. The resultant loss of trust lead to loss of income, and they tried to make up for it by piggybacking off of their rivals, producing inferior copies of Libero artifice. This only harmed their reputation even more, and eventually they had to take out loans from a criminal organization-slash-Mystery Cult calling itself the Guild of the Ancients of KaSusu. They were soon so heavily indebted to the GAKS that they effectively took control of the House, turning its resources to narcotics production in addition to all the counterfeiting - and the GAKS' head has greater ambitions in mind...
  • Personality: Zoss Panopola is a 'strange one', an 'unusual specimen', a 'deformed horrorshow of a child', depending on who you ask. They have embraced every label and allow none to give them pause. An only child, it's plainly apparent that if they did have siblings they may well have been murdered out of sheer irritation. Zoss does not stop. At all. They think fast, talk fast, and move fast. Snippy, sarcastic, and suffers neither fools nor anything outside their interests; they typically deal with such annoyances by 'messing' with them. The only thing that will get them to stop and listen is indulging them a bit - talking to them about alchemy, artifice, and how magic blends with mundane is a good start. Alas, while they have high hopes for getting Panopola out of its current rut, living in Pansom with few restrictions did not do wonders for their attention span or sense of organization - their worst enemy is themselves.
  • Appearance: "Roll up, roll up, admission to gawk at the freak is free. Just beware of the evil eye, it'll turn you to stone. Hehehe!"
  • Backstory: Zoss is the only child of Panopola's mismatched heads, Enoss and Zygota-Simolu (the latter of whom is also the Cosmic Eye of the Guild of the Ancients of KaSusu, and whose marriage to Enoss secured the GAKS' control over the House). Zygota saw in her child a possible key to ending Panopola's losing streak, and saw to it they were extensively schooled in both traditional Panopola attunement and the techniques of the Ancient Mystics of KaSusu, in an environment away from the stagnancy of Panopola's old guard. Many years ago, they volunteered for an experiment in replicating 'minor biomancy', which lead to their current 'condition', a significant amount of body mass redistributed to their right leg, an arm shrivelled to a functionally useless stump, and their internal makeup altered. This accident only encouraged them. Even their parents, otherwise loving, doting and supportive to an almost embarassing degree, were alarmed. Nonetheless, this 'spirit of experimentation' has renewed their parents' confidence as they head off to the academy. Zoss themselves is inclined to agree - their House has become stagnant and derivative, what they need is something new, something exciting! With pizzazz and zing and all the neologisms! Now the only question is can they be bothered to put in the effort.
  • Magic: Among the Magocracies surrounding Phoebenon, Panopola stands out for largely eschewing 'traditional' magic - its artificers do not cast spells, prepare rituals or summon otherwordly beings, instead being laser-focused on attunement with 'arcane matter' - loosely defined as any inert matter, living or otherwise, that's been infused with magic. While not as flashy, this attunement has many uses - at its most basic it can provide the mage with real-time information about its properties and what other magic it can react with, and at more advanced levels enables the mage to communicate through it, to see through it, to feel through it, to convert one form of matter to another, and eventually to manipulate it as one would a part of their own body. The higher levels of attunement are notoriously difficult to obtain, however, and as such the majority of Panopola artificers stick to the few techniques that best permit them to Fabricate and/or Replicate the specific items they're charged with, to the point of Crippling Overspecialization.
  • Zoss, like many Panopola artificers, is an alchemist. While they lack the power to Fabricate and Replicate that their house is (in)famous for, they make up for it with a heightened sense of attunement with the classical elements of alchemy - the waters, the fires, the airs and the earths - and when infused with magic, instinctively understanding just the right combination of ingredients needed to produce a specific reaction. They can also use this power to divine the truths behind enchanted items, and with enough time to develop a connection, animate them. One such item being of their own creation, their 'Magic Arm', a prosthetic arm (that covers their useless, shrivelled-up right one, strapped in with belts) they personally built and keep well-maintained, in defiance of the Panopola quantity-over-quality mindset. Combining this arm with whatever alchemical concotion they've whipped up, you can never be sure what they're going to punch out, cast out, or shoot out. The chief downside, of course, is the lack of immediate flexibility afforded by traditional spellcasting, as it requires Zoss to prepare their concoctions in advance.

  • Name: Already we face a complication. This student's people traditionally bear two names - the extremely long "ceremonial name", given at birth but rarely used, and a shorter "personal name", which is picked by the individual themself as they come of age and is the name they use in everyday life.
    • Ceremonial Name: Mardan Relien Meison Eden Tao Carillon Bergur Avnam Eimon Damor Musal
    • Personal Name: Micaio Antero

  • Age: 30, but physically equivalent to a late teenager since his people age a little slower than humans

  • Clan and Background:

    • House Animus does not exist.

    • No, seriously, it doesn't. "House Animus" is the made-up noble house under which the chosen student delegate of a large, politically influential Beastfolk coalition has been enrolled in the Academy. Given the nature of the system, a supposed noble background is a necessity for enrollment - but whoever said your patron house needed to be real? Many of the more traditionalist actual Houses protested this brazen defiance of the Academy's established order - and the idea that their precious children would have to study alongside a "stray" - but the Beastfolk's offer was simple: you let us have this, and in exchange, we don't block off numerous vitally important forest and river trade routes that run through our territory.

    • The actual movement behind "House Animus" are sending a Beastfolk student off to the human's Academy primarily as a diplomatic move. They're sick and tired of being treated as second-class citizens at best, and see allowing one of their own to study under the same roof as humanity's most talented (or simply most wealthy) mages-in-training as a crucial first step towards wider interspecies integration. The possibility that their chosen student could fail entirely at this mission hangs heavy in the backs of their minds - but if worst comes to worst, the Beastfolk have always been ready for war.

    • Given its nonexistence, House Animus naturally lacks an aesthetic, traditional field of magical speciality, or motto. Micaio cites his personal ones whenever the question comes up.

  • Personality:

    • Micaio is the ideal maned wolf-man... perhaps a bit too ideal. His people value lateral thought, creativity and open-mindedness, and Micaio has all those traits in abundance to the point where he's considered a bit eccentric by his own kind, let alone by cultural outsiders. Prone to florid spiels about nothing in particular and lacking any safety-related bounds on his curiosity, Micaio is the kind of guy who'll turn every day you spend with him into a small adventure, whether you want it or not. It doesn't help that, also characteristically of his people, Micaio has claustrophobic tendencies and a burning wanderlust; he will not allow you to keep him in one place for long.

    • As overwhelming as he can be, Micaio is also one of the least malicious people you will ever meet. His boundless optimism, cheeriness and affability are most of the reason he's attending the Academy in the first place - Micaio Antero sees the good in humans where most beastfolk don't, and he has made it his life's mission to bring out that goodness and become humanity's collective furry friend. He's not guaranteed to know where your boundaries are, precisely, but he's always going to be apologetic and desperate to make it up to you should you make him aware he's overstepped them. Furthermore, if you observe that Micaio is sweet and quirky and assume he must be stupid, you've just made a huge error of judgment, one you should be glad he isn't usually inclined to exploit.

  • Appearance:

    • Micaio is, biologically, as typical as maned wolffolk get. He stands at 7'5'', most of which is taken up by his long, bandy legs. His fur is primarily a rusty orange, with a paler undercoat that shows through especially strong in his tail and underbelly, black "stockings" on the ends of his limbs and the black mane that gives his species their name stretching from his head all the way down the back of his neck - in other words, the typical colours of his kind. His dark eyes sparkle with an eternal curiosity, tempered with a subtle hint of slyness.

    • Traditionally, the aguará wear colourful patchwork shawls, each piece hand-sewn onto the garment at a different point in their endless travels - a life story told in fabric. Attempts to get Micaio to trade his in for something more befitting of human academia proved fruitless, not least because none of the local tailors knew how to make clothes for an inhumanly tall and gangly canine, but he has made the tiny concession of wearing a small pin badge bearing the goat-skull symbol of "House Animus". Human nobles love to flaunt their symbolism, do they not?

  • Backstory:

    • Micaio's people, the maned wolf-folk - aguará in their own language - are nomadic traders and scholars, their culture revolving primarily around an insatiable curiosity. To them, the purpose of life is to gather as broad a range of experiences and knowledge as possible, not for any practical purpose so much as for the pure joy of knowing. This emphasis on the abstract and mental leads them to hold materialism and its vices in contempt, hence their propensity to live simple lives as nomadic drifters. It also makes them notorious political neutrals, having resisted classification under the "Beastfolk" umbrella humans generally tried to shove them under until very recently, when negotiations with the political front that eventually spawned "House Animus" finally convinced them to declare a tentative alliance.

    • Micaio Antero was a perfectly ordinary young specimen of his kind. Raised on the road from the moment he could walk by a shifting network of family members and honorary foster families, as is aguará tradition, the only thing that really set him apart was his fascination with humans. Where most aguará, though more willing to look humans in the eye than most Beastfolk, are at best coldly distrusting of them (and not without reason), Micaio has, since childhood, found the intricacies and inventions of humanity's empires and magocracies awe-inspiring. It even inspired his chosen personal name - Micaio Antero, "amico anthro", friend to humans.

    • Not everyone considered Micaio's desire to be an ambassador to the human race a worthy goal. Many, including members of his own family, told him outright that he may as well give up. To the burgeoning Animus movement, however, a young man determined to forge a friendship with those who might otherwise be convinced to see the Beastfolk crushed under an iron heel was a blessing. When they hatched their plan to manipulate a Beast student into the halls of the Academy at Phoebonon, it was Micaio who stumbled almost without trying into the role, not that he's complaining. A chance to see humanity's greatest magical achievements up close and personal, alongside their own youth! A dream come true!

    • Time will tell if his enthusiasm is misplaced.

  • Magic: The aguará specialise in magic designed to facilitate their nomadic lifestyle, and Micaio brings some of their signature tricks with him to the Academy. Its direct applications in a combat scenario are questionable - the maned wolves disdain senseless violence and steer well clear of warzones - but it's got a variety of more down-to-earth uses.

    • Magic Doors: With this spell applied, any door or door-like construct will not take anyone who travels through it to the location that is physically on the other side. Instead, they will be transported via teleportation to a location, anywhere on the planet you are currently on, that fits the door's material construction and design. It's all but impossible to pick a specific location for a door to take you this way, and a lot of the qualities that determine where it sends you are quite arbitrary, but that's exactly how the maned wolffolk like it; not knowing what you might find when the door opens equals exciting opportunities to discover new things. Doors can also be rigged to send you to exactly one specific location by this spell - the "Green Room", an interdimensional meeting point for maned wolves where they can share the things they have discovered on their travels in peace, which also serves as the location of some of their most important cultural events (e.g. a youth's personal naming ceremony). Aguará are VERY reluctant to show outsiders the Green Room, so don't bug them about it.

    • Travelspace: Within every maned wolffolk's travel shawl, there is a small pocket. Small from the outside, anyway, for it is the primary receptacle of their main magical ability - the power to make small pockets and bags much, MUCH Bigger on the Inside. A whole warehouse's worth of space lurks within an opening the size of a child's purse. Additional Required Secondary Powers to this ability are a complete lack of encumbrance from anything held within an affected pocket, and the ability to pull objects far larger than the opening in and out of it with ease, Hammerspace style. With this ability, the maned wolves can keep an entire well-stocked dwelling's worth of resources on their person without the need for any fixed abode. There's little in the way of sorting for the objects contained within, however; expect lots of rummaging for what Micaio needs, and the odd Rummage Fail.

    • Tireless Traveler: Not a spell per se, though there is a magical aspect to it. Aguará are used to walking all day, every day, with breaks only for biological necessities, and as such their natural physiology has dovetailed with a steadily growing innate supernatural power to make them ridiculously resistant to fatigue. They can go several days without sleeping at a time with no negative effects, can easily maintain a superhumanly fast sprint across distances of several kilometres (and don't even think of trying to tire them out moving at a slower pace), and some of the most tireless have even exhibited unnatural levels of pain tolerance. Micaio isn't at that last level just yet, but he IS going to be among the most agile and physically capable of this band of nerds.

  • Et Cetera:

    • He's back. Not that he was around all that long the first time. Sad, isn't it?

    • [Setting equivalent to English] is Micaio's second language, but he speaks it more than fluently. Seriously, this lad's a Purple Prose machine.

    • Micaio has a "sister" (which, given maned wolf family dynamics, does not necessarily imply a biological relation) who he cares deeply about. She may be important later.

  • Name: Kinslayer Sentinel Apollyon
  • Age: 17
  • Clan and Background: House Phenemeon
    • Bane of the Athecastes
    • Scourge of New Clandestia
    • The beehive flame-vents of those nobleman-warriors, a hundred thousand strong, conquerers of the Houses Thelesseom, Trenjam, destructors of Ancient House Athecaste, Scourge of New Clandestia, home to the magics of silence and sound, strike unmatched fear into the heart’s of enemies. In silent pursuit, relentlessly they stare down at their marks, steeley eyes sweltering in their own bubbling flesh. Everlasting kindling for their own horrible fire. Mortal war-torches, it is said beneath their ever-clad armor the flamelings’ bodies are ashen, dark as shadow. None know the truth of the fearsome army-house, and few desire to find it. To meddle in Phenemeon affairs is to find only the cold of their steel and the heat of their fire.
  • Personality: Born of smothered spark and dreaming of fire, Apollyon became emotionally stunted at a young age when he witnessed his father's death by self-immolation. Now inspired with thoughts of glory and martyrdom, the young flamekin developed an unhealthy relationship with death, one that beckoned him towards the pulsing tongues of war-fire that enveloped, singed and scorched. This evolved after his ostracization, wherein he was reduced to a self-hating shell of humanity eager in equal parts for death and acknowledgement, and with an almost religious devotion to Warmaster Leona, matriarch of all Phenemeon hordes. Outwardly, he masks his immaturity with a stony disposition, feigning stoicism in order to tame the tumultuous waters of his inner voice. He plays at the supremacist, leveraging his ferocious reputation to alienate his fellows and keep them far from his wounded heart. Apollyon's fear is transformed in this way to the egoism and pride of an elite soldier.
  • Appearance: Fear of the Fearless
    • Standing at around 5'7 and just under 150 pounds, years of malnutrition and brutal battles have morphed Apollyon's body into a machine of stringy meat and pale flesh. His face is branded with the mark of the kinslayer, and his eyes are perpetually widened in a haunted, ghastly stare. Ever since that day he watched his father burn, it's said he's never blinked. It's said the image is burned into his retinas.
  • Backstory: To many within the flame-wielder's ranks, smoke magic is seen as a half-measure, a weak school for the weak-willed unwilling to surrender themselves to the blaze of war. These are the ones spared the sight of its use. Shadow of death, fog of war, the smoke is ever-singing, ever-choking. It blisters the larynx and fills the lungs. And it is true that all in House Phenemeon do hate it. The blot of smoke smothers more than just breath, however, and the nullifying effect on rival magics forces the house to refrain from purging this mutation as they did the Coldflame. Born to Phenemeon skirmishers, Apollyon was originally named Set Col and was raised around constant battle and bloodshed. When he was 12, his father died by self-immolation, birthing within the boy a deep-seated desire to do the same.
    • Unfortunately, he demonstrated no talent with fire magic, instead (to the absolute horror of his elder raiders) becoming attuned with smoke magic. Eventually, the other men attempted to kill Set out of misplaced fear, triggering his magic and causing all of them to die of asphyxiation. The whole ordeal left Set mentally scarred for life and, upon returning to the Phenemeon Boiling Fortress, he was tried and branded a kinslayer, marked as such by a brand on his face. So-called Kinslayer Apollyon, he was used in increasingly dangerous battles until it finally became clear just how tenacious he was. At the age of 17, Apollyon had reached the top rank a Kinslayer could obtain: Sentinel.
  • Magic: House Phenemeon, borne from the seedy underbelly of Athecastian weather mages, have created the most volatile and outwardly destructive magic force known to the continent. This magic is called War-Casting.
    • As the story goes, a slave to Athecaste royalty whose name has gone forgotten by time was cast out of the city walls. Starving in the forested surroundings, he stumbled upon a warm bonfire, pulsing as though in tune with his heartbeat. He rested by the fire, feeling warmth return to his weary body, and eventually succumbed to sleep. Wreathed in slumber, a voice gently massaged his mind. Come, it beckoned, Be taken by the flame. He resisted with half a heart, though the fire's seduction slowly crept up his hands, caressed his chest. It nipped at his ears and kissed his neck with the sincerity and grace of a lover climbing into bed. When he awoke, he had been set ablaze. In agony he burned the forest down, at the top of his lungs screeching    INFERNUS! INFERNUS O GODS ABOVE! DELIVER ME IN FIRE THAT I MAY BE MADE PURE.
    • The main tenant of War-Casting is purity. Fire reduces all to it's most pure state. Phen warriors are trained from birth to resist the pain of fire and wield it as both sword and shield. By drawing from the soul of the mage, WC is the truest expression of the soldiers' covenant with the Lonesome Bonfire. They're bred from a young age to value combat, and the influence of adrenaline helps many young soldiers grow into the flame quickly. War-Casting has the unfortunate side-effect of wearing down the mind by exacerbating the greatest desire of the individual soul. For the Phenemeon masses addicted to combat, this means bringing educated, analytic fighters to the level of mindless berserkers, frothing at the mouth and living only for bloodshed. And some would say, they do not have it worst.
      • Born in those who desire death above all else, Smoke Sorcery is a horrific sub-school of WC that generates smog from the flesh of the mage. This smoke smothers all, from breath to magic, and it is hated by all within the House of Fire. They who burn detest the smoke as magic of cowards, unwilling to exalt these outcasts as heroes, but at the same time recognizing the utility of their magic-cancelation, the smoke-users live in limbo.
  • Et Cetera: As is typical for Phenemeon soldiers, Apollyon was taught extensively in thermodynamics in his days as Set Col, and he is an incredibly eloquent and verbose speaker if one manages to look past his chronic cough and raspiness. He's also a monstrous combatant, trained primarily in the use of the Phenemeon Nail-Blade, Apollyon is also well versed in hand-to-hand combat, can utilize his smoke to fire projectiles and is incredibly resilient.

  • Name: Richter Ben Obsidian
  • Age: 18
  • Clan and Background:
    • House Obsidian - A industrial household that holds more with natural philosophy and the sciences, the house is somewhat reclusive and insular though by no means quiet. Thunder and Lightning are common sights among the house, with large towers and clockwork structures lining the borders of their territory.
    • A recent house, its rise can be traced back to Libero, as House Obsidian were originally members of Libero who disagreed with the policies of the house. Dr. Obsidian himself so long ago cited the idea of mass production of their technologies, citing that they’d be quite useful even if lower in quality, and that efficiency had its place. Though many within Libero disagreed, a few members felt that Obsidian himself had a point and followed him in an exodus out, it’s only been in the recent years that this has turned to their benefit and let them grow into a full house. Obsidian has opened the borders for visitors and claims a comfortable position, having changed quite a bit and even having a family of his own now.
    • Upon learning of the academy, Richter, the heir to the house, was enrolled. Richter protested at first, citing his unusual appearance and his patchwork nature, though was comforted by Obsidian himself that he would do fine and make the house proud. Richter, unlike his father, was a mage at heart, and could easily handle himself.
  • Personality: Inventive and curious, Richter fancies himself a scholar much like his father and prefers to take a page out of his book. Being open and inviting, out of a genuine desire to form alliances and friendships, while trying to balance being a shrewd operator and knowing when to pull back on trust. A sore spot for Richter is his patched together nature, and the origin of the parts that were grafted onto his body. He's rather sensitive and defensive about it and will jump if somebody mentions it, even if the comments meant are innocent.
  • Appearance: Intelligent if a little shrewd
  • Backstory: A young mage with no memory of who his old family was, as far as he knew he had always been on his own until he was 15. An experiment out at the edges of Obsidian territory he was conducting with some lightning magic ended badly and he woke up a week later in a lab, being overlooked by the head, Dr. Richard Obsidian himself, who welcomed him back to the waking world and adopted him. Richter was thoroughly confused but in a way happy to have some sense of stability, he was given a home, meals, a warm bed, and most surprisingly of all, care. It was hard to accept but Obsidian took him in and genuinely cared for his well being, wanting only the best, a factor that Richter still has yet to get used to.
  • Magic:
    • Promethium Magic
      • Electrical Manipulation - The source of all power in House Obsidian, mages cast lightning spells to animate automata and manipulate those electrical pulses like puppets to direct them. No one in House Obsidian is quite powerful enough to cast lightning storms but more than strong enough to supply power needed for their creations.
      • Metal Manipulation - A major power the house has, and how they’ve industrialized so quickly. While they aren’t strong enough to rip weapons from their enemies hands, the mages specializing in metals have their uses back at the factories, assembling the devices for the House and can provide basic repair on the field using these skills. More powerful and skilled Mages can even use this to form protective armor around themselves.
      • Fire Conjuration - A basic skill most mages know, good for sealing holes in the Machines of the House.

Okay!

  • Name: Joaquin Alvarado

  • Age: 16

  • Clan and Background: House Alvarado is a fairly new house, established when the Alvarado crime family overthrew the tyrannical House Torres and established their own house on the fly in the semitropical region of Paracas down south. Forsaking their criminal ways, they have since turned to weapon manufacturing and farming, amassing a small fortune and welcoming anyone of note, so long as they pledge loyalty and accept the Alvarado family name. The house is still fairly small compared to others, and most members are close to each other.
    • Because of this, the neighboring houses look down on them, seeing them as low-brow criminals who desperately want to be something they can’t, but they are tolerated for their wealth and goods. While the elders are no stranger to cutthroat practices, they are inexperienced in politics and tend to stay out of things while they learn more about it.
      • They rule through a council, and members are selected by capability.
    • Born to parents who were sworn to the house as healers during an outbreak, Joaquin spent most of his life in the Alvarado palace, happily unknown to the goings-on of the wider world. While his parents cared for him, they worried about him spending all his life shut up at home, and urged by the house elders, decided to enroll him in the academy to experience new things and to give the other houses a good first impression of the youth of House Alvarado.
  • Personality: Joaquin is a quiet boy, preferring to live in his own world and read about many things. He spent most of his life sheltered to current events, only knowing the palace and the town surrounding it. He’s somewhat smart, and spends a lot of time learning about all kinds of things. He’s also very nervous around strangers and isn’t very sociable.
  • Apperance: A slightly taller than average boy with brown skin and neat black hair. He also dresses very formally, with a button-down shirt, matching pants, and loafers.
  • Magic: Joaquin is fascinated by shadow magic, and has been learning it since he was 6. However, he hasn’t really used it in combat and only uses it for mundane purposes.
    • Handshake: A simple technique in which he envelopes his arm in an extendable tendril of shadow. He can do it with his legs as well, and uses it to reach faraway stuff.
    • Shadow Shroud: Envelopes himself in a cloak of shadow, and can move around freely in it. Of course, it’s only useful in dark areas or at night, or else it sticks out like a sore thumb. He can make it grow to about the size of a classroom before collapsing from exhaustion.
    • Another Me: Transforms his shadow to become a tangible figure and can even command it to move. It’s his favorite technique, and uses it for all kinds of pranks. He can also use it as a decoy.
  • Et Cetera: He has autism and ADHD, but since medicine isn’t advanced enough to diagnose him, he’s described as “odd,” “shy,” or “different.” He also tends to envelope himself in shadow when he’s in a bad mood.

I belong to neither Heaven nor Hell. I am a woman self-possessed.
